Genrepalooza 3: Playlists are done, phwew (4 Viewers)

These guys are often referred to as Alt-Country or Post-Country, also indie, emo, alternative, 4th wave emo, etc... this song maybe actually is all those things in parts but mostly country and completely ####### great.

It's not so much exactly all the words I used—
it's more that I was somehow down to let them loose.

I saw these guys play while I was standing outdoors in an actual alleyway/truckloading garage in November '17 in Salt Lake City.  It was snowing.  Excellent show.  And this is their best song. Love this version too.

I'm not sure they're country but I don't care where you categorize them---happy to see them drafted.

Round 21 - Girls - Vomit (Rock)

I think Girls are the best Bay Area rock band of this century but like a lot of recent bands, they called it quits after a couple of albums.  I tried to love Christopher Owens' solo stuff but I can't remember much about them now.

Girls' first album generated some buzz but I always liked their final record Father, Son, Holy Ghost better.  It had more of a classic rock vibe, especially on this power ballad that goes for the big power ballad finish.  Sorry, it's six and half minutes but it's the song that's always stuck with me

This song, Alex, Honey Bunny....good stuff.  This was one of my favorite albums of 2011.

1st of all, I like longer tracks - so that's never a problem with me.

Next, I really like the guitar effects - I can't really say what is used though, but it has a nice change throughout. It follows the mood.

Is that an organ as well? I like whatever is used during the soulful part.

Finally, on lyrics - it has a mantra feeling with the repetition - until the bridge (i think) when the variation hits.

'Cause there's something that I get from myself
And there's something that you give to me
Well, I got one
Without the other, well, it's not enough to be
I need your love

Liked much & new.

Sorry I've been a bit unmotivated.  We had to go to a friend's mother's funeral this weekend.  Kind of sucked the draft out of me.  But the Avengers movie has put it back.

Round 19  -  Celine Dion  -  Ashes  -  Female

I'm not normally that big a fan of Dion, but sometimes she really knocks it out of the park.

Round 20  -  Glory  -  Common (with John Legend)  -  None of the Above  (2015)

"Glory"
(with Common)
(from "Selma" soundtrack)

[John Legend:]
One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
One day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
Oh glory

[Common:]
Hands to the Heavens, no man, no weapon
Formed against, yes glory is destined
Every day women and men become legends
Sins that go against our skin become blessings
The movement is a rhythm to us
Freedom is like religion to us
Justice is juxtapositionin' us
Justice for all just ain't specific enough
One son died, his spirit is revisitin' us
True and livin' livin' in us, resistance is us
That's why Rosa sat on the bus
That's why we walk through Ferguson with our hands up
When it go down we woman and man up
They say, "Stay down", and we stand up
Shots, we on the ground, the camera panned up
King pointed to the mountain top and we ran up

[John Legend:]
One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
One day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
Oh glory

Now the war is not over, victory isn't won
And we'll fight on to the finish, then when it's all done
We'll cry glory, oh glory
We'll cry glory, oh glory

[Common:]
Selma is now for every man, woman and child
Even Jesus got his crown in front of a crowd
They marched with the torch, we gon' run with it now
Never look back, we done gone hundreds of miles
From dark roads he rose, to become a hero
Facin' the league of justice, his power was the people
Enemy is lethal, a king became regal
Saw the face of Jim Crow under a bald eagle
The biggest weapon is to stay peaceful
We sing, our music is the cuts that we bleed through
Somewhere in the dream we had an epiphany
Now we right the wrongs in history
No one can win the war individually
It takes the wisdom of the elders and young people's energy
Welcome to the story we call victory
The comin' of the Lord, my eyes have seen the glory

[John Legend:]
One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
One day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
Oh glory

[John Legend:]
When the war is won, when it's all said and done
We'll cry glory, oh glory
A lovely song that really deserved its Oscar.

Another late night pick, this time there's no excuse other than boredom. Well, and more commitments tomorrow.

I should end this with my handle's namesake or my home category, but I'm going with this to add to the mix. It might be out of left field, but what the hell. God, could I ever tell stories about this song and what happened during its popularity, but I'll refrain. I'm bringing 'Looza back.

Round 22.xx  (Bonus -- Pick Your 'Looza)

Genre - Dance or Pop (I'm going Dance)

Artist - Justin Timberlake ft. Timbaland

Song - SexyBack

I'm bringin' sexy back (yeah)
Them other boys don't know how to act (yeah)
I think it's special, what's behind your back (yeah)
So turn around and I'll pick up the slack (yeah)

Go 'head, be gone with it

eta* This might be the better song, actually. My Love, ft. T.I.

eta2* Hey, if anybody sees a copy of this record from Vinyl Me, Please, please let me know. They cut an exclusive pressing that's running for about $200 on Discogs. I'd actually buy it if it were around sixty dollars or so, which was its average price of Discogs last year. Maybe I'll just wait on it. But if, for whatever God-Only-Knows-why reason one sees it, let me know.

Nice finish!

I really like this. The vocal effects are pleasing to my pallette.

I think I will make my official final pick soon too.

Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
Night is falling
You've come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore

Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home

And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass

Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say,
"We have come now to the end."
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again

And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home

And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West

22.xx Annie Lennox - Into The West - (Old Fart; 2003) - Spotify

🙂

I've heard that this is a sad song, from some.

It's not sad to me. I find it hopeful.

Only 10 songs in the Country playlist so I'll add one.  This one song I can tolerate from my wife's favorite country artist, Gary Allan.  I've seen him in concert at least 4 times in the early to mid 2000s and he always put on a great show.  Did an awesome cover of a Petty song - I'll try to find it.

Heck, I may have been at this show:  Breakdown

Momentum waining in here for sure but if I keep posting post-2000 categories in here, will people keep drafting? i.e. even though Eephus says it ends Thursday🤬, if I post on Thursday night saying the Friday categories and Radiohead and glitch-pop, can we keep it going?

My idea would be no dice, :(  and one off, one time only categories that are much more narrower (sometimes specific artists or semi-obscure genres).

Basically just an excuse to keep the thread going and if people who skipped over the draft want to jump in for these one off rounds, the more the merrier.

Thoughts?
My other proposal with the continuation is that from 9 PM Eastern every night, the theme is "There is a Spotlight That Never Goes Out"

- Everyone can post unlimited picks/songs (try to still align with categories for playlist purposes)

- Turn the spotlight on. Highlight all the songs in a the categories by all the bands that were missed.
