Hurricane Sandy (1 Viewer)

Those fires  I really hope they contain them soon, if it's even possible at this point. Those fires can get out of control real quick (even more than they are) with the wind blowing like it is.

Can't "see" the footage, but in the best of conditions, breezy point is aptly named. Surrounded by harbor on 3 sides, southern from facing open ocean and western front butting into 3-4 miles of harbor to jersey. The winds do whip there.

Just took a walk outside. Looks like my neighborhood avoided any sort of major damage. Lots of little tree branches but no big limbs.

We got it much worse during Irene. At least a dozen major trees down. Not sure how long I'll be without power. Jcp&l isn't giving out updates yet.

Of course, the real concern is for nyc and the other harder hit areas. Sounds like it really was the 100 year flood event that we always talk about in the insurance industry

Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant has declared an alert due high water levels in the intake system.
Any further info?
LinkIt's the oldest nuclear power plant in the country.
Maybe 2nd - http://www.exeloncorp.com/powerplants/dresden/Pages/profile.aspx

I work for Exelon which owns both sites....
No worries.
Any thoughts or insights on this boomer? This has jumped my inconvenience and annoyance to full blown anxiety. Obviously the last thing we need. How "normal" is an alert? There is one south of ocean city Nj that is also pretty close to the shore.
2nd lowest level of concern of 5. Not a big deal at all. I've seen a dozen in 20 years, just a condition outside of normal operating conditions. Plus the site is in shut down, again no worries...
Ok this is helping. Humor a shell shocked. Child of the nuclear age sitting in 70mph wind in the dark...

In brief, what made fukashima "FUKASHIMA" as compared to this? Was fukashima not overrun? Why is it not like this?
Fukushima was still active when it occurred. Presuming this has been shut down for maintenance, you would no longer need the coolant system to cool the fuel rods since they aren't being used therefore, you wouldn't see a meltdown. Additionally, there is no indication that water has gotten to the generators (probably why it is still just a warning) and there is no indication the generators are in any danger of failing and one would think the US had or has put in new regulations about having an actual backup in case of floods although this last part is conjecture.
Ok this is reasonable to me but I'm still  for a bit. As bad as this storm was, I feel pretty confident in feeling it wasn't analogous with a tidal wave but it's been a long life
Hmm. We're certainly lucky that it's the fall when many plants scheduled their refueling and that the water went up only 6'. Normal method to cool the fuel rods will not be affected until the water reaches 7' so there is no need to use the backup system.

I cant believe how calm it is outside. I thought this thing was supposed to last another whole day. I got power back during the night. Just surveyed the damage and I got chunks of tiles missing off my roof.

OK so I have a # of shingles missing off my roof. Do I call my homeowners insurance first? How does this work? I have a $1000 deductible so is it even worth it?

I would call them so that they send an adjuster. That way you have an estimate to go on and if there's further damage, like a leak, they know about the roof damage.

Checking in -

Home: Got up at 5:30 am, could not find any major damage with a flash light. Plenty of downed branches and what not. Flat tire on my truck (no idea how this happened)

Work: Tons of water on one side of our warehouse. Water running down the side of the wall like a faucet is open. Luckily no product was damaged but there will be some need of serious roof repair I am guessing.

Well hopefully they prioritize these. I'd hate to be hold up a family with serious issues over a few missing tiles.Thinking about this further, I'd get someone to look at it before filing a claim. At some companies even a claim that does pay out could count against you down the road.

Worth it if you'd like a new roof for $1000. When we had the hurricane winds hit us in Ohio a few years ago they didn't even send out a person to look at it since they had so many calls/claims. Just told me to get a quote and they sent the check.

We dodged a major bullet here in DE. All is well. Unbelievably lucky how this thing was a direct hit and we came out unscathed. Irene hit us a lot harder last year.

Fingers crossed for all those on the NJ coast & NYC. :sadbanana:

Well its not just a few

We got hit by Hurricane Ike 4 years ago and had a few missing shingles, fence down, etc. We took pictures the next morning, and called insurance. They sent out an adjuster a few days later. They gave us money for a new roof and fence. How it worked was they said $8000 for the roof, $2000 for the fence, which equals $10,000. Minus your $1000 deductable, so here is a check for $9000. We then called around and told the roof and fence guy that we had $9000 to spend, and they did it for that. So it really didn't cost us anything. The deductable kinda gets absorbed it you check around.

:sadbanana: for Breezy Point.

Wife's family has multiple homes there, one may be in the area of the fires. Nobody stayed in Breezy, but have yet to hear from a few.

Pretty sure they'll prioritize by areas hardest hit and get all the claims while in that area. And like Kirby said, they may not send anyone at all if there are higher priorities. I think that's what happened on mine many years back. "Everyone safe? Based on current rates we'll send you a check. Do with it what you want." Meaning fix or replace the roof. If I needed more money send in the estimate.

Also, all of the major insurance carriers will set up claim stations around the heavy hit areas, and ship in hundreds of adjusters to help handle the claim load.

stay out of the flood waters if you can i imagine there is a whole lot of industrial and other chemicals that got mixed up in that stuff and letting it touch your skin or get into your body would not be good stay high stay dry and just let it drain brohans

Just took a ride over to the new house. No damage there thank god but there are two huge branches that fell in the yard and two houses in the immediate neighborhood that had trees fall on them. Still without power so i havent seen the devastation down the shore, but i'm not sure i want to. The whole area is like my second home. :(

There are also photos that show sharks swimming through the streets. They're photoshopped, but still... be safe.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2225143/Hurricane-Sandy-2012-Online-pranksters-spoof-deadly-superstorm-Titanic-Grease-shark-send-ups.html

Tons of people are praying for you guys in New Orleans. We've been there. Please stay safe. I know it looks bad now, but if your family is safe, that's REALLY all that matters. Everything else can be replaced.

Well this nig spoke too soon earlier in the thread when I said I made it through unscathed.

WRONG!

Power went out after the storm had long passed, about 245am. I haven't slept a wink and I've been drinking all night.

No generator so my plan to chair a webinar this morning from home is trash, and my kids nanny can not make it, so I'm stuck for even looking for a rental.

I really feel like #### on a stick right now.

In disaster situations like this the claims adjusters will issue checks on the spot. The checks may be initially for the actual cash value until they repair or replace the damaged property. Then they will issue another check for the difference.

Hope eveyone is safe.If things are tough, remember the words of Lindsay Lohan:

WHY is everyone in SUCH a panic about hurricane (i'm calling it Sally)..? Stop projecting negativity! Think positive and pray for peace.

Raw sewage is leaking rapidly from a plant in Howard County, emergency management spokeswoman Karen Spicer said. About 2 millions of gallons of sewage per hour are pouring out of the Little Patuxent Water Reclamation Plant as a result of a power outage.

"I have a job in New Jersey that is much bigger than presidential politics," Gov. Chris Christie said on the show Fox & Friends. "I couldn't care less about that."

At least someone gets it in today's political bull####. As a fellow fatso I support you

Woke up this morning and got yourself a nail gun.
Got up this morning and I grabbed that gun, took a shot of shingle and away I run.Made a good run but I run too slow, they overtook me down south Tottenville.

Lindsay need a falcon punch.

All is well in East Hampton. Trees and power lines down all over the place, but no major damage. I have no power or water, but plenty of beer and ice.

The thing that really sucks is that I don't get a strong enough cell signal at home to use the interwebs. Pray for me. :-)

I'm watching Christie live on Today. He looks like he hasn't slept a wink.

:goodposting: T&P, particularly to those in Queens with the fires. Hopefully everyone there got out - that looks to be the worst, by a long shot.

too late to swap out Romney for him?

If you read one of the links Jewell posted you can see how some of these 17 people died or were killed by Sandy.

-Tree fell on two kids outside playing in the middle of the storm.

-Guy let his dog out to go wee wee and he was killed.

-Electrocuted by down power wires.

What are people thinking? You don't go out in the middle of these storms.

The picture of what looked like an entire neighborhood burned to the ground, holy crap that sux. I can't believe more people were not killed in those fires at Breezy Point. It looked like a war zone.
