Cocaine is actually an addictive substance. Any more bad comparisons in your quiver?
You are under the impression that addiction is only chemical. That's understandable, as that's how it's presented often. But it's not the case.

Also, Einstein used LSD, which is not an addictive substance.
Apparently, you did.

Brett Favre was abusing pain killers so badly, it led to seizures. Anyone thinking he was lucky that he was never tested, is fooling themselves. But considering he buttered the NFL's bread, it was handled behind closed doors. Convenient how he voluntarily checked himself into rehab, huh?

Randy Moss was an ENORMOUS knucklehead. Numerous drug and other off-the-field issues, but never was he given anything more than a slap on the wrist, because....?

Ray Lewis..

The NFL is not the "victim" here. This is their game and their rules. If they are ignorant and arrogant enough to go through with this and kick one of their YOUNG, up and coming superstars out of the league for smoking some dope, it's on them. If he played for the Patriots, this would not happen.

I have no ties to Gordon. I don't own him in any leagues. I'm just going to be very disappointed if I don't get to see him play.

Very true, but that was before the new drug policy. I agree with your stance, but I don't know that Moss and Favre would be given a pass today.

not sure if you heard, but a lot has changed

Another pick, no WR taken...admittedly I'm a biased owner who loves Gordon's talent but it definitely seems like the Browns know something we don't.

Last year I took chances on Gordon and Blackmon. For a few weeks there it looked like I hit the jackpot. Now, not so much....

What they know is that they are not ready for prime time in 2014. Without Gordon, they are in trouble so grab players at positions of need for the future and wait for Gordon 2015. That's what I would do.

Allow me to encourage everyone in the most overt manner possible - drink alcohol; drink LOT'S of alcohol.

Sure it may wreck your health; it may cause you to plant a fist on your girl's face; you might even mow down a pedestrian - but I gotta eat.

Sincerely,

Roger Goodell

He has a tattoo of a pot leaf on his back, don't see how he can stop smoking weed and if that is the case he should just do what Ricky Williams did.

The NFL has been testing for PEDs and banned substances since 1987. It's wasn't the equivalent to the new drug policy but a program was in existence.

Opposite end here. Had them both. Traded them both away and cried in the fetal position a few times last year. Now the sun is shining again. It's gonna be ok, looks like.

This thing will probably flip flop like this their entire careers. Great players but likely will never feel comfortable owning them.

Kid was getting a lot of recognition and positive pub during the offseason.....I thought maybe....just maybe he would relish in being one of the best in the world at his position and work hard to stay focused. Unfortunately for Josh and his teammates pot is more important. Cleveland sure was looking like they were turning things around, I feel bad for the fans.
Blame the victim. Let Josh get high, NFL has issues if they want to remove an elite player from the game over weed.
Yeah, this is the NFL's fault. Some of the responses in here are laughable.
Those are owners of Josh Gordon.
It's unAmerican to drug test and suspend a star employee over marijuana.
Wow... some people... Gotta be fishing right?

As a business owner, I ask questions that I am obligated to ask. If I turn away a potentially great employee because I suspect they may have something to hide, my competition wins.

The NFL has no competition, so we can all lose and there's not a damn thing us fans can do about it,

No, if this is true about Gordon, and he is gone for the year, you have to move forward with the assumption that you cannot count on him for 2014, 2015, etc. He will have shown that he cannot be counted on.

Yeah I traded Gordon last year and was in the same fetal position looking like an idiot.......Now, not so much.... Too bad this kid is a Terrell Owens type talent.

after reading the comments I'm confused, hes addicted to a non-addictive substance?
Yes. People can be addicted to sex, food, texting, shopping, etc. It's still addiction.
Are we talking addiction or compulsion? These all seem like compulsive behaviors to me and a conscious attempt to hide from stress, depression, boredom, reality, etc.

Now is a good time to get ESPN on board with allowing players to smoke marijuana. They would do anything if it helps Manziel.
Bob Costas would also be a good flag bearer for the cause.

Edited to fix typo.

AFC North teams have Thank You cards in the mail to Gordon.

Just when it looks like Clev is turning the corner, too.

I do still like the Clev squad. That D will be ultra nasty. Losing your top playmaker is a bug blow, though.

Have you ever seen someone withdrawing from marijuana? Curled up on the floor, shaking, vomiting and on the brink of death! This is real.
"Addiction is the continued repetition of a behavior despite adverse consequences, or a neurological impairment leading to such behaviors."

Any questions?
Yes, do you really believe it is his addiction to weed and not his IQ of 60 that is the problem?
Bingo.
By the way that he conducts himself in interviews, he does not appear to have a below average IQ. He seems to enjoy smoking pot and getting high and is erroneously dismissing the risks attached to doing so with respect to his job. In that regard, if he is confirmed as having tested positive for marijuana then it would remind me of the same defiance that Ricky Williams showed back when he went away for a year and studied alternative medicine or whatever it was he did while on his mary jane hiatus.

Neither are sex, gambling, online gaming, shopping, fantasy football, etc., etc., etc. Because they aren't external chemicals that the body develops a dependency on, right?

Anything that makes the brain say "Damn...that was awesome!" can be addictive. Thinking otherwise is ignorant.

Aside from the stupid semantics debate, I'm eager to see how this turns out. The kid's a talent and the NFL's better for having him in it playing. It would be a shame regardless of ownership or how invested someone is in him as a player.

But Ray Rice probably won't miss a game for his ####. What a joke.
This. ITT we have all this dumb argument over addiction and whether or not he's "dumb"... he smoked weed, at least twice. Ok. WOW.

Ray Rice UPPERCUT his wife, knocked her unconscious, and drug her body around the hotel. It's on video. And yet he remains unsuspended.

Donald sterling said something racist and got banned for life. Gordon smoked weed and got banned for a year. Ray Rice beat a woman and "we'll let the legal process play out."

I've gotta say that's a million times worse than smoking an herb that the majority of americans now consider socially acceptable, worthy of legalization and regulation and less harmful than alcohol and cigarettes. This NFL looks a lot like the DEA (classifying marijuana as more harmful than cocaine, for example).

Tell me which one of these players is more deserving of a season long suspension?

Latest rumor is that someone on this board, who traded Gordon away week 1 of last year, sent Gordon a bale of acapulco gold and said 'pack yourself some bowls buddy, you earned it.'

His talent level doesn't matter now, its out there that hes to be suspended for a yr and if he isn't there better be a damm good excuse for it. If there was going to be a cover up its blown now.

I think the league should lighten wayyy up on pot. But having said that, there are hoops you have to jump through in order to make yourself a wealthy man. Sucks for him.

edit: (I think the country should lighten wayy up on pot, too.)

Bumping this thread to see if Soulfly is still alive or whether suicide was indeed an option.
Very alive.

Im actually not worried.
I'm actually clinging to your confidence as a last bit of hope.
You can actually cling to the words of Drew Rosenhaus as well. He said there was no truth to this, and we all know Drew Rosenhaus is a solid man of his word full of integrity. He would not lie to the public about one of his clients.

I'm willing to bet it's not as clear cut as espn is saying. They often embellish and exaggerate to sensationalize.

My best guess is he is going to agree to go to rehab and get 8 games.

While ESPN does tend to sensationalize stupid things, it's hard to imagine something being less than clear cut as a positive test. This wouldn't be a story if he didn't test positive for something (namely marijuana) and if that's the case, given how many chances he's had, I'd be surprised if he had less than a full season to mull it over.

Jason Lacanfora: "It's entirely possible Gordon won't miss any time".

Im leaving out the Line afterwards lol

Great points

Good points but there are differences between Gordon and Rice's situation.

Gordon has no out--he had PRIORS. This was not his first rodeo concerning weed. He smoked, knew he should not be smoking, and he got caught--end of story. He was warned all season long, don't smoke or you will be suspended a year, and yet he STILL did it. He cannot claim he never saw this coming.
