Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (2 Viewers)

Is it just an "I don't like female vocals" thing, or do you have more specific problems with how that version was done?
Bit of both, I suppose.  I do not like her voice at all, on anything really, even though I acknowledge that is just me and that her voice is very good.  I haven't listened to this cover in years and turn it off if it comes on Beatles channel, but I remember thinking she sang it as too much of a dirge.  Not enough hope combined with wistfulness.

I was thinking about this more and wanted to mention, too, that the original is perfection. The problem messing with perfection is that you're likely to remove an element that is key.  In this case, Ringo's drumming and George Martin's piano solo are crucial elements to making the song what it is.

Round 4.07 - Paper Planes (46) - M.I.A. 2008

More magic from the aughts. (Must have been a good decade for me.) A song centered around a Clash sample, M.I.A.'s seeming glorification of all things drug dealing, money, and violence is actually told from the point of view of an immigration documentation forger and smuggler (hence, Paper Planes). The question in this song is really, at least to me: At what point does dripping social commentary become celebration regardless of the point it's trying to prove? It's the same question Scorcese (the aforementioned) recently faced with The Wolf Of Wall Street.

We report, you decide. Link is to the video. Check the Beastie Boys cameo at like 2:51.

BURN IT DOWN

Yeah, I'm realizing I can probably wait on the one. But now f'n Tasker has me debating another song.
FWIW, neither of those two songs are on my imminent radar (well, nothing is on my imminent radar, because there's like 50 more picks until I get to choose again).  I just know they're songs that you like, which I also like, which are probably both fairly off the radar for most other drafters in here until the later rounds.  Could be wrong though.

I almost really went with a Floppo burn it down by picking a certain song.
what's funny is... I'm not really even sure what that would...oh. right. don't.

but this one hurt. figured I'd be taking it later and LOVING it, because yeah- I love this tune and have since it first came out. trying to think of a song sampled so thoroughly since Ice Ice Baby (surprisingly not on the list) and yet somehow changing the song completely.

I'm so torn here between a few songs but on most days this would be in my top ten all time and in some days it might be #1 plus, I'm kind of going the sentimental route because this was the mother/groom dance song at my wedding.

4.08 - Stand By Me - Ben E. King (#131)
Oh my. I hadn't seen this. Just a beautiful song. Gorgeous.

That's a wonderful choice, by the way.

What more could be said about it? Great pick! Value for this late. I have this on an Ultradisc Mobile Fidelity One-Step™ box set that I run through a system not worthy of the set, but I just like looking at the set so damn much it doesn't matter.

It's probably my favorite album, all things considered.
I could feel you breathing on the song. I thought for sure you were going to take it this round.

I have no idea how this made it back to me....

Something    The Beatles.

A bit of a Beatles run!  I knew I wanted a Beatles song, and this is a great one to have.  Arguably my favorite of all time.  Such a beautiful song!......also, the rest of that group is pretty meh for me....Let it Be is not one of my Beatles faves......no brainer pick

I heard a Smokey Robinson cover of this on the Beatles channel this morning.  Had never heard that one before; it was, as you might expect, quite good.

I'm afraid the Frank Sinatra cover has kind of ruined the song for me.  "Something in the way she moves me, JACK!"

I am graciously leaving all The Beatles stuff to you guys, but this is one I would have drafted, albeit while complaining that Maybe I'm Amazed didn't make the list and claiming it superior to the Fab Four love songs.

Hate that Sinatra cover, too.  Fully agree on Maybe I'm Amazed.
