Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (2 Viewers)

374 - Be Thankful for What You Got / William DeVaughn / 1974

I haven't heard or thought of this song in ages. In fact, I didn't even remember it at all, Until I played it on Facebook a few hours ago. It's a treasure and a classic. It's probably the original Gangster record and it's in a really weak tier. My link
I don't think I know this song.  Another to add to my list.

Massive Attack covered it on their first album

I realized what this reminds me of. An old school fantasy football draft. We all have the same player rankings and positions but no ADP to guide us.

They reach into your room, oh oh oh
Just feel their gentle touch
When all hope is gone
Sad songs say so much
You can tell everybody this is the song
It may seem quite simple but now that you're gone
I hope you don't mind/I hope you don't mind
That I put it down in words
How wonderful life is when you're in the world!

I was trying to place the "Sad Songs" artist and then it hit me, actually. "Sad Songs," "Your Song," "Diana's Song" (okay, it wasn't called that...)

5.22 John Lennon - Imagine (#19)

There is only one song left in this first bracket that I will karaoke and it is also my go to song when I need a little reset in my life.

Surprised it lasted this long but like Stairway to Heaven, I am sure many think it is overplayed.

dammit. I should have taken that instead of Be Grateful. The top 25 pickings are getting slim and that was the cream of the crop.

I had to bite my tongue and not talk about this song during the big "cultural/political impact" debate.

This is not my favorite John Lennon solo song.  It's not in my top five.  I hate some aspects of the recording of it.  But our dear @wikkidpissahmade a convincing argument for why I should love it more.  I'm going to find that and post it here.

John railed against "Imagine," by the way, because he didn't like that he made it so accessible.  He called it ""an anti-religious, anti-nationalistic, anti-conventional, anti-capitalistic song, but because it's sugar-coated, it's accepted."  As an album, he preferred Mind Games, which he called "Imagine with balls."  But he criticized most of his (and everyone else's) songs.

I try to remove politics from my music listening and instead focus on what the song means to me - a moment, a feeling, a person, etc.

I marvel at how some of you get into the nitty gritty of songs and albums but I’ve never been one to travel down that road with my music.

I can’t wait to read wikkid’s thoughts on this one, as he is one person that always makes me think outside my comfort zone.

Here it is.  I didn't write much about Imagine because I knew my ranking (#10 John song, #42 post-Beatles overall) wouldn't make some people happy.  But I posted this:

I love John's sweet and tender vocal.  I love the piano riff but not how muddy the piano sounds.  I love that this song is inspiring to so many people.

I don't love the lyrics.

Then wikkid posted:

context wins this fight. reallyreallyreeeeally hadda be said when it was said. the counterculture wasn't about the war or Nixon or even race. it was about the rules. yeah, breaking THEIR rules was fun because there were so many and the peeps got so wound up about infactions. but what the rush of freedom and equality and hallucinogens was saying to us was, "what about NO rules?! can we get to a place where we don't need em at all?! arent rules more about the people who make them and what does that say about them? what does it say about us?"

well, that was just plain sedition then. we woulda been shut down if the peeps with the money & soldiers even dreamed that was where we were headed. somebody had to say it in a way that wasn't a spoiled brat's shout. somebody had to say it in a way that arguably made sense. and, as i've been on about in virtually every FFA music thread i've participated in, there is no better way to make a point than in song. and no one with more generational cred to do so than John Lennon.

so, i gotta pull rank. it's not for you, now. or you. or you. or you. it was for us then and i cherish it as the Declaration of an entirely different and ultimate kind of Independence. it is a Document, beyond loving.

And later in response to my reply, this:

fair enough.

we can't know our eloquence. my god growing up was Willie Mays. he couldn't have known that, wouldn't have been impressed, mightn't have cared. and i didn't need him to. i didn't need him to hit .300. i didn't need him to hit 50 homers, triples&triples, steal bases, win Gold Gloves. i needed him to play with power, passion, purpose. and joy. i grew up around a lot of people who looked like him and, if i ever saw any of em do anything with joy, i wouldnta known what to do with that.

i just wanted to be free. life has always been relentlessly stoopit to me, people irredeemably ridiculous. i am not stoopit. i am not ridiculous. but i had to be a people, so i had to be. Say Hey Willie had 1000 more reasons than me to be stoopit & ridiculous and maybe he was. but when the ball came off a pitcher's hand, an opponent's bat, he could pound stoopit, chase down ridiculous, run past the obscenely rigged game we are forced to play and be free. if he could, maybe i could.

i have done what i could to outrun the ordinary, help loved ones feel special, help strangers see the difference. but i can't know my eloquence. Willie Mays didn't. John Lennon didn't. i might actually be embarrassed by what eloquence another might have found in me. in my retirement, i have found forums to express and caused many to feel that i'm stoopit & ridiculous. i hope also to have helped many to see past the stoopit & ridiculous in themselves, possibly to have a greater desire not to be stoopit & ridiculous. but i don't know. we never know. we just do. with power, passion, purpose when we can. and joy.

Had he lived, John would have dug Ween's Doobie Bros. cover

This grouping of 25 songs has been heavily drafted, and I only know/like three or four songs that are left. I was gonna go with a different one of those four, but I'm going with this one. I've only heard it a couple times before, but I played it earlier today about 5 times. I first heard it riding in the car with my mom a few years ago. She usually listens to country radio stations. This song came on, and I listened to the lyrics, and it made me tear up.  It did the same today.  Anyway, this song is more folky sounding to me than country. It's a nice song.

Round 5 - The House That Built Me - Miranda Lambert   (#441)
Believe it or not, I labeled this one as "no hesitation." She's one of the few modern country artists I like, and yes, some of her stuff is more folk/Americana than country. This isn't her best song (that's Gunpowder and Lead) but it's a good one.

Pistol Annies are good as well

OK, this is an entirely unstrategic pick.  All the 400 segments are starting to look rough and I'm likely to lose the stuff I like at the top as well.  But I am not a strategic thinker.

Much of whatever connection I have to something that's "modern" on this list is probably due to this board.  For most of the aughts, I was getting mixes from @scorchy and others.  This next pick is a song that I really liked off one of those mixes, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it on the list.  I can certainly understand the argument that an Arcade Fire or T.V. on the Radio, or even Hold Steady song would seem more representative of the indy rock thing in the aughts or early teens this century, but none of those bands had a singer who was in Troop Beverly Hills, so they can suck it.

4.18 (no. 326) -- Portions for Foxes -- Rilo Kiley

Fueled by Ramen was the #### for a few years back in the day.

I had one of their comps that I've tried to track down because it had an Impossibles song at the end that was credited to Rory, their lead singer. I can't really find it, but I remember the song in my head. That's neither here nor there, just thought I'd share that.

This combination of posts basically forces me to post "Jenny, You're Barely Alive" which is a great one off Rilo Kiley song from a Saddle Creek label comp back in the early 00s.

Accepted by who? Let me tell about a professor of mine and a William F. Buckley, Jr. column... :grad:

Oh, it just occurred to me that Mrs. R sent me three picks this morning:  the two I took for her, plus a backup if those were taken.  The backup is in a different grouping and still available.  Does that mean I should go ahead and take it for her?  I suspect I should and she'll be ticked if I don't.  What do you think?  I hope she's feeling better.

Biggest surprise of the draft so far:  >= 4 Miranda Lambert fans

The RS list is heavily Rock/R&B oriented but the Country songs on it are well curated. People can argue "well what about blank?" til the cows come home but they're all quality songs (even #391).

I say go for it.

I don't know.

She was feeling lousy? I missed that interlude.

Get well soon and rest up, Mrs. R. We have a huge match-up this weekend coming up and we need you at full strength.
