QB Kirk Cousins, ATL (3 Viewers)

When you look at what Cousins is being paid this year and next year ($90 million over the next 2 years) they would be INSANE to bench him for Penix. Now if he gets hurt, that's different but to bench a guy that will make over 2.6 million a game sitting on the bench sounds crazy to me.

I agree in principal. Then again why pay a QB $90 mil then immediately draft his replacement, who is already old by rookie standards?

The Falcons are 100% committed to Cousins, until they're not. They signed 31 year old Justin Simmons, they traded for 32 year old Matthew Judon. Those aren't moves for the future, they're moves for right now. Arthur Smith may be crazy enough to believe this team can make a deep playoff run and if Cousins falters I won't be in the least surprised if they bench their $90 million man.

They drafted him because they were smartly looking ahead. A combination of next year's QB class being meh, and also anticipation of not having a high draft pick, they had no idea when the next time would be that they would have the chance to land a good, young QB. GB did something similar when they drafted Love.

I agree. But why not play him in preseason games two & three? You only do that for players you see making an immediate contribution.

There is a ton of mixed messaging going on around the Falcons. I don't think it can be entirely dismissed.

If Cousins doesn't play at all either then I agree, but if Cousins is playing, my guess is they want to give him as many snaps in the preseason as they can since this is a new offense, new team, etc.

Cousins didn't play in the first two games either. Whether or not he plays in the third game really doesn't help explain why Penix didn't play in the second and we already know he won't play in the third. He's not injured. Raheem Morris has been quoted as saying (paraphrase) "We have seen enough of Michael Penix."

I 100% believe Cousins, if healthy, is the starter in week one but it honestly feels a little bit like he may be on a short-ish leash.

I dont think so. not this year. you dont spend the amount of money Atlanta did to bring him in and then sit him on the bench.

he may have a shorter leash next year. but this year I have no concerns about him whatsoever (other than the injury) but all signs indicate hes a full go on that front too.

"Wouldn't want anyone else leading out team." Zac Robinson on Kirk Cousins heading into the first week of the 2024 season. The OC said he feels exceptionally confident in what they've seen + hope to see from Cousins.

I just watched every Falcons dropback...

That was the least I've seen a QB move in a game ever. Not an exageration. He broke the tackle box just once I think. No play action. No under center. Just 3/5 step drops and pray there is no pressure.

Wow.

The Falcons were in pistol or shotgun on 96% of their snaps today.

Of the 22 snaps out of shotgun, the Falcons had 0 designed runs.

Of the 26 snaps out of pistol, the Falcons ran the ball on 81% of their plays.

To go back to a previous post up this page, if you are paying two QBs a total sum of money, what does it matter what the pay split is ? Go with the one that looks better/gives you the best chance going forward. Decision was already made at draft and questioned then. It’s season time now.

The common person such as us can see it that way. But the entangled web of NFL greed, corruption, etc, doesn’t see it that way. Some owners are just so cheap they would rather see their franchise tank with the guaranteed money to a QB than to just move on. The Browns have been a loser franchise for quite some time. I think the Falcons will probably move on sooner than most think.

Quite so. And also these owners and GMs with the unshakeable arrogance that they’ve made the right decision paying for someone. Another one I’ve never understand …..

Draft capital dictating how easily a player can be replaced either way. High capital more chances afforded during failure. Low capital, no rope at all.

Surely when you find a stater with low draft capital it’s an advantage because you have filled a starting spot with someone on a lower wage ???

Eg Pacheco. There you have a starting RB position filled on a low wage. Multiply those and you have more room to pay for FA’s or give contracts to draft successes ? So why is the standard line along the lines of ‘ he has low draft capital so he’ll probably be given no room for error or will be replaced in an upcoming draft with a higher pick ‘ ?

He’s a success with more bang for buck. Makes no sense to my brain.

Watched a bit of the game and it's seemed like Steelers D was really disruptive. Maybe the take home is that unit will be really good this season

This is true. They look elite. Still, Cousins can't move. Defenses can just rush to a spot and meet at the QB.

totally true.
but when you spend the amount of money they spent, you are not gonna bench the guy for one bad game.

once you bench him, you have essentially admitted you screwed up. Management will give him a long leash this year because they dont want to admit this yet. and if he performs badly all year long, he will have a short leash next year. but this year is all Cousins (provided he is healthy) they may give Penix a start or two late in the year to see where he is at if the playoffs are out of reach (or if they have a playoff spot locked up) but otherwise, this is the Cousins show. At least.... for this year.

I am being told that their o-line is good for run blocking and not pass blocking. I am also being told this is Kirk Cousins' worst WR core since he was in Washington.

If you are relying on Kirk for any meaningful starts, I would start making that move now. Additionally, evil geniuses may want to start stashing Michael Penix.

The Falcons, after all, would be the first to know this information as well.

I tire of the Manning overexposure, but this was a unique view last night with the Manning Brothers and Matt Ryan watching the final Falcon drive.

I like Cousins and it was good to see him shut up some of the "can't do it in big game" talk.

I didn't get to hear this part so thanks for posting it , I was watching Aikman and quoting him in the game thread
-I like when Manning points out as the Falcons cross midfield not to spike it and also credits them for not changing formations and wasting time
I thought those were excellent comments

Seems like a statement game for Cousins and the offense, and we probably will see them look a bit more like we expected going forward. Also seems like they'll be less pass heavy than expected, but can't blame them when you have Bijan back there.

I do enjoy listening to them breaking down x's and o's with Belicheck and other former players. Last night it was decent for the most part. Of course, I also can't stand Joe Buck and Aikman... so that may also be why I tune in the Manningcast.

i dont think this changes anything about cousins. eagles defense is complete garbage
I feel a bit different. From week one, with hardly any snaps under center and some really tentative throws... it felt like Cousins was a bit snappier in this game and the last drive really had some of his former swagger back. This game could have been a turning point for his confidence coming back from the Achilles.

That was my take. I thought he looked WAY more comfortable in the offense last night.

Next Gen Stats
Kirk Cousins completed 42 of 58 passes for 509 yards, 4 TDs and an INT, with all 509 yards coming from passes within the pocket, the most in a game in the NGS era (since 2016).

Cousins Passing Between Numbers: 27/33, 385 yards, 3 TD (+25.1 EPA)

This is kinda what I was hoping for when I saw cousins arrive here. he felt like the right kind of QB to take advantage of the skillset of the receivers here.

I think it just took some time to not think about the injury and to learn to trust his guys. next step in the progression is to be able to play like this on a consistent basis.

well I got real lucky. he was my backup QB in one league and London was my starting WR. I double dipped that way. big week.

The "can't deliver under pressure" Kirk Cousins now has 15 Game Winning Drives in the last 4 years.

That's four more than any other QB. Including Mahomes.

Cousins does some magical things as a QB, especially late in games, but it's his consistency week in and week out that's always kept him out of the elite QB discussion. Personally, I'm rooting for the guy to take the Falcons deep into the playoffs this season.
