The Stat I 'm Most Interested In... (1 Viewer)

Gentlemen,

I know we are only one week + one game into the season, but I already have a question I would love to see answered both now, and at intervals throughout the season.

Is it just me, or does every. single. game. seem to be about 30mins or more longer than they were last season? I mean, between commercials every effing play, and what seems to be 5min reviews for every damn change of possession... Football is becoming nearly unwatchable.

I seem to say this every season, but this one is already out of control.

Does anyone know where these stats (length of each game) could be found?

Redzone your doing it wrong.
Can't get redzone without paying for the Ticket.I refuse to pay for the ticket due to the BS going on with the product, the refs, and the excessive ads (or in SD land, "we'll be back shortly")Real talk - to sit and watch your fave team or any game, period... Is bordering on completely unbearable.

Can't get redzone without paying for the Ticket.
Yeah you can. Call in and say you're switching to Dish so you can get red zone as a standalone. They'll give it to you as a standalone to keep you from switching. They wound up giving it to me completely for free.

BLASPHEMY!He's a witch, I say -- burn him!
Seriously, though, commercials? Do you not have Red Zone? And regardless, NFL games can never be too long. Sunday is literally the only day of the week I have the living room television on mortal frigging lockdown, so I may be biased in being totally for longer game times. Not that I've even noticed whatsoever anyway.

I believe someone tweeted the games were averaging about 5 minutes longer this year.

"Through the first seven weeks of the 2011 season, the average NFL game time was 3 hours, 6 minutes and 58 seconds, says league spokesman Dan Masonson.

That's up 1 minute and 29 seconds from the 3:05:29 average through the first seven weeks of the 2010 season. And up a full 2 minutes, 28 seconds from 3:04:30 average for the full 2010 season."

For 2012 week 1, the average NFL game time was about 3 hours, 12 minutes. So there ya go. It's getting longer. More challenges? Backup refs take longer? More Commercials?

 Great stuff man.

Shocked it's only about 6mins longer than last year. It truly does seem to me anyways, to be just brutally played out.

Just wrapping your head around the fact that a 60min game can be drawn out to 3+hrs is insane.

I could watch football all day. And I do. Unfortunately, "all day" really only means about 3hrs of actual gametime for 10hrs of viewership

Not to rub it in, but NFLN is also great if you dont have a DVR. They replay games all week, multiple a day. They have commercial breaks at half time but they remove all the stoppage, games take 90 minutes to watch. Its pretty good if you watch redzone on the weekends then watch the play by play during the week.

Ya I like to catch those when I can... never really thought to DVR them. I usually catch the games I really wanna see.But ya, Im basically gonna have to go back to streaming RedZone. ah well.Life was so much simpler when DirecTV was hackable.

I like Red Zone sometimes but hate when they focus on games I don't want to watch. They call it Red Zone but really there's a few teams that are on most of the time and they'll show replays of other redzone action. Rather just flip to the game I want see if I notice a pattern I don't like.

NFL Game Rewind allows you to watch 30 minute long condensed versions of every game. You can also watch multiple games on your screen simultaneously.

Can't get redzone without paying for the Ticket.
Yeah you can. Call in and say you're switching to Dish so you can get red zone as a standalone. They'll give it to you as a standalone to keep you from switching. They wound up giving it to me completely for free.
Ready to get your mind blown? Not only can i NOT do what you said... I can one up it.

Here in Canada (at least in Ontario, and Im assuming Canadawide since we have very few providers), not only can you NOT get RedZone standalone... You cant get Ticket standalone.

Ya, you read that properly. I have to buy a sportspack, which contains EVERY major sport package at a monthly rate of 40 something/month. No way around it.

Pure Garbage
I really wish you would have mentioned this in the OP, I would have stopped reading earlier.

 I'm gonna run to the doctors and have him check out this broken heart I just sustained....... for free.

I would like to see this tracked over the past 20 years or so. Whenever there's a new labor deal and tv contract, one thing that always goes unreported is the new terms regarding tv timeouts, halftime and other commercial concessions such as in-game advertising. I'll bet the game times are 30 minutes longer or more as compared to when I was a kid. Redzone is not an alternative to watching a football game. I watched it once for about 10 minutes when it came out a year or two ago and have never watched it since. NFL on tv these days is nearly unwatchable for me without a dvr and still pretty annoying even on delay skipping the breaks. Not only are the breaks longer and more often, but now there is usually 20 seconds or so (it seems) of screen ads and commercial announcements before they get back to the game. It is definitely having a significantly negative impact on the gameday experience for me, whether on tv or at the stadium.

my sentiments exactly.I would love to see this data as well... There is no way games now arent at least 30-45min longer from a good 15-20yrs ago

I once read that the average NFL game contains only 13 minutes of actual play time if you subtract the time outs, tv breaks, referee stoppages, time in between snaps with the play clock ticking, etc.

It's impressive that we've managed to take an hour and a half event, give or take, including half time and turn it in to a 3.5 hour advertising extravaganza... then again this is America. I suppose I shouldn't be that surprised.

Last year I missed about half of the first quarter of multiple GB late games. Sure enough, they move back the late game kickoffs to 4:30 and I still missed half of the first quarter of the SF@GB game. :hot:

If I'm not watching on tape delay, I literally get up and go do something if a team scores. Unload the dishwasher, check the mail, whatever. Between the review, the XP, the ad break, the pointless kickoff for a touchback, and the 2nd ad break, it's ridiculous.

here we go... bring the hate!!!

something's gotta change. at what point do fans say "enough" in some regards and have some reform? it'll likely never happen but soon we're going to be watching 4hr games.

Im already considering scaling back the amount I watch because I get more aggravated than anything waiting between every damned play

The one benefit is that, from my normal seat at Lambeau, if I leave immediately after a score, I can pee and get my fancy beer at the beer-snob stand without missing a play from scrimmage. I almost always watch on delay when at home, but some of my buddies haven't yet grasped that concept so there is usually an argument to be had.

Philly-Cleveland game seemed like it was 315 minutes.

Btw, the scab refs are having a big impact here I think.

11 Minutes of Action

According to a Wall Street Journal study of four recent broadcasts, and similar estimates by researchers, the average amount of time the ball is in play on the field during an NFL game is about 11 minutes.
That is absolutely pathetic. You know, the CFL may be an inferior product, but it's 10x more enjoyable to watch for reasons such as this. a 3.5hr broadcast for 11min of play is unforgivable.

Meh. This day and age with DVR I must say I haven't noticed much. I'm ALWAYS watching a Thursday/Sunday/Monday night game somewhat delayed, because I work and have wife and kids and can't park my butt in front of TV at any given moment. So I can always fast forward through commercials.

With that said, the one thing that has bugged me is the automatic review of all scoring plays. Get rid of that garbage. Coaches have challenges for a reason right?

I was against DVR'ing because with fantasy and sunday dedicated to football... I need to watch things as they happen.

But this is very close to changing
