I'm so glad this isn't one of those public polls. There are some things I just don't want to know.

Not looking to turn this in to a religious discussion but I think generally speaking the people who are shocked and disgusted by people choosing their dog view human life as sacred and that humans have a soul. It’s not surprising that some people just see humans as more evolved animals and wouldn’t see saving a human as some moral obligation.
Not a religious thing at all for me, and I own and love pets, but I guess I have a bigger separation between pet and human. The way I thought of it as I answered was I would be able to look into my family's eyes to tell them I had let the dog go to save somebody, but I couldn't do the opposite - tell a family that I couldn't get to their parent/kid/whatever because I saved my dog.
Although it’s not the same, I was once put in a scenario where I could have let someone drown.

While canyoneering (rappelling down a ravine), a friend slipped and fell off a 20ish foot waterfall. Fortunately, he wasn’t hurt by the fall, as the pool at the bottom was pretty deep. Once his head popped up, he quickly shouted up to the rest of us, at the top, “I’m OK!”

But the raging waterfall created a vortex, essentially a vertically oriented whirlpool. The current pulled him back to the base of the falls, which then pushed him back under. Repeatedly.

I quickly started downclimbing, briefly stopping to consider my options:

Jump in to save him, or throw a life line? For choice two, I’d have to retrieve the rope from my pack, anchor it on slippery rock, and secure it to him, as he frantically bobbed up and down.

Did I mention I’m a terrible swimmer? As I pondered the logistics of saving two people from near drowning, thankfully my friend behind me acted: he dove from the top, grabbed friend #1, and pulled him out of the vortex.

He certainly behaved heroically, and bailed both of us out of a terrible situation.

In retrospect, I’m ashamed by my reaction. I acted quickly to attempt the rescue, then failed to make the correct, life-saving decision. At least my cat wasn’t a part of the equation.

But it isn’t quite so egregious, when you consider friend #2 was a Coast Guard rescue swimmer. That fact escaped my mind in the heat of the moment, however.

Probably where I fall into. Why are human lives more important? Because we're more evolved animals? Why would a human have a soul and an animal not? Is that a flying spaghetti monster thing?

I don't understand the save the stranger side at all. My dog sleeps beside me in bed every night. I'm supposed to save some random other being over her because that random other being's species is the same as mine or because we rose to the top of the food chain and got some notion of being all important or superior?

Nope.

You said the reason yourself. We are more evolved and have a better understanding of what it does to a person to lose a loved one and it is more difficult than losing a pet.

You take the death of some random being you've never met harder than that of a being that cohabitated with you for multiple years?

That seems so heartless to me.

I read obituaries all the time and don't give a second thought. Sure it's sad but it has nowhere the impact on me that the loss of one of my dogs did.

When I had a chance to help? Yeah, I do. It seems heartless to let that person die that has friends and family.

Hey kid, sorry about your mom or dad, but my dog you know.

I guess it all comes back to people feeling like all human lives are more important than all other lives, which is not a view I share.

The kid in your scenario would certainly choose his dog over a stranger.

And there is a reason why kids aren't allowed to vote or drive cars or live on there own. They can’t fully understand consequences. That is a horrible example.

Were just not going to see eye to eye on this.

Give me a time machine and let me go back 10 years and bring someone back, I'm getting my dog and not your dad or child or whoever, I don't care that the random human who died was someone's mother/father/daughter/son. There life is not more special because they were born this species and not that one. I will get the one who brought me love and companionship, who I spent years of my life with.

I think in reality almost everyone is doing the same.

I've met a whole lot of bad god awful people. Never met a bad dog especially if he's mine. Thing is I'm pretty sure my dog could dog paddle long enough for me to save him too. So human first though I like dogs much better than people.

When I had a chance to help. Yeah I do. It seems heartless to let that person die that has friends and family.

Yeah kid sorry about your mom or dad, but my dog you know.

I think I'm reality almost everyone is doing the same.

That is sad and heartless.
No it's not. You are not special because you were born this species and not that one.

Yeah, it is exactly how it works. Certain lives and species are move valuable. Presidents over citizens, humans over animals ever since the beginning of our existence.
So you'd save Trump from drowning over your father/son/mother/daughter?

He's over the citizen right?

Lol, move the goal posts much? Go troll else where.
Literally the hierarchy you just established.

I haven't been around since the beginning of humans, so I don’t think I established it, but thanks for giving me credit.
Your justification for human over animal is they are higher in the hierarchy.

Yeah, it is exactly how it works. Certain lives and species are move valuable. Presidents over citizens, humans over animals ever since the beginning of our existence.

Your subsequent follow up was president over citizens is a MORE VALUABLE LIFE, so if that's the way it is and that's the established hierarchy of what lives are most important, you'd be pretty damn heartless to let that all important presidential life pass to selfishly save some random person in your family, right?

I'm so glad this isn't one of those public polls. There are some things I just don't want to know.

Not looking to turn this in to a religious discussion but I think generally speaking the people who are shocked and disgusted by people choosing their dog view human life as sacred and that humans have a soul. It’s not surprising that some people just see humans as more evolved animals and wouldn’t see saving a human as some moral obligation.

Here is what from says.

The duration a dog can dog paddle depends on factors like breed, fitness, water temperature, and stress. Most dogs can dog paddle for 10–30 minutes before tiring, with strong swimmers like Labradors or Retrievers potentially lasting longer (up to an hour in ideal conditions). Smaller or less athletic dogs may tire in 5–15 minutes. Cold water or panic can shorten this significantly. If you’re saving a human stranger from drowning, the time it takes depends on the distance, your swimming ability, and conditions (e.g., currents, waves). A typical rescue scenario—swimming 50–100 meters, securing the person, and returning—might take 5–15 minutes for an average swimmer. If your dog is a strong swimmer and nearby, it’s likely they could dog paddle long enough for you to save the person and then return to assist them, assuming they’re not too far out or in distress. However, prioritize the human life, as dogs generally have better natural swimming instincts. Keep your dog close to shore if possible, and monitor their energy levels after the rescue. If you’re unsure about your dog’s stamina or conditions are rough, consider securing the human first and calling for help for your dog to avoid risking both.

I don't need to/can't really say anything else, this statement you made sums up your feelings rather well. Once you move to ranking which human lives are more valuable, I have to check out.

Probably where I fall into. Why are human lives more important? Because we're more evolved animals? Why would a human have a soul and an animal not? Is that a flying spaghetti monster thing?
I think many, if not most major religions place human life above animals.

I tend to agree with you; it’s not a given, though I don’t believe any organisms have souls. Within that construct, what’s the moral obligation to save a stranger?

Within that construct, what’s the moral obligation to save a stranger?
On one hand you could argue that it's best for humanity to save one of our own species. On the other, humans are the most likely to do immoral acts, so preference of the dog is the more ethical decision. I don't think it's as cut and dry as some are making it and I think it's unfair to label someone who chooses to save their dog heartless.

Society has determined that the obvious thing to do is to save the person, but that's likely steeped in centuries of religious teachings that we're special. Personally, I think humans are the worst species on the planet while dogs are the best (despite also being the most disgusting). To answer the OP, I'd probably save the stranger, but that's not because I think it's morally the right thing to do, but because society has deemed it the right thing to do.

Essentially 50% of the people voting have said that. I don’t hold that same position although I’ve admitted in the heat of the moment I’m not sure what I’d do. But I don’t think either position is disgusting.

I think it is disgusting the way he put it and how he is trying to twist my words into that I rank the lives of people.

I do agree that I am not sure what I would do in the moment, I am not a cop or military etc where I have been trained in these type of situations. I would like to believe that I am helping if there was a car accident or a fire etc, but I have never been in that situation so I am not sure how I would react. I am sure that if someone was drowning or in life threatening situation and I was brave enough to help, that I am picking the person over the animal every time.

The hypothetical presents guaranteed pain and suffering for someone. I think I should be willing to take on the pain of losing my dog to spare someone else the pain of losing their human.

Of course, I actually have this choice every day. Instead of feeding and caring for my dog, I could put that money towards saving starving kids in Africa. But I don’t mostly because that’s a scenario about what’s right in front of me vs what I will never see.

I think I'm reality almost everyone is doing the same.

That is sad and heartless.
No, not really. We dont all have to share the same world view.

Okay, sorry I think it is heartless to not care what happens random people, but you do you.
Why is it heartless to choose a beloved being over someone you don't know? Why is it heartless to choose another species over another human? I'll won't wait for your condescending reply.

When I had a chance to help. Yeah I do. It seems heartless to let that person die that has friends and family.

Yeah kid sorry about your mom or dad, but my dog you know.

Yeah, it is exactly how it works. humans over animals ever since the beginning of our existence.

Your subsequent follow up was president over citizens is a MORE VALUABLE LIFE, so if that's the way it is and that's the established hierarchy of what lives are most important, you'd be pretty damn heartless to let that all important presidential life pass to selfishly save some random person in your family, right?

Keep posting in circles trying to paint me as a bad person. Thread that needle, maybe you can blame me for the Kennedy assassination while you are it.
"Certain lives and species are move valuable. Presidents over citizens"

I don't need to/can't really say anything else, this statement you made sums up your feelings rather well. Once you move to ranking which human lives are more valuable, I have to check out.

So bad. I told you that is how it works and thousands of years of history prove it. I didn't set the standard. You should check out though and get help you literally said you didn't care what random human died that you would get your dog. Disgusting.
Don’t call people disgusting because you don’t agree with them.

Read what was said before you tell me how to react or what to do.
I’ve read the entire exchange. You literally called him “disgusting” after saying he would save his dog instead of a random human.

Do you think no one can read? We all see who is acting disgusting in here.

Wow, and now you’re literally putting words in other peoples mouths to “win” your argument. Talk about irony.

Clearly you didn't. I said it was disgusting to not care what happens to random people, especially in this scenario when you would witness it happen. Yeah I find that disgusting.

No one said that. That’s how you comfort yourself.

Some one saying they would chose their dog does not mean “they don’t care about random people”.

That’s a logical fallacy which judging by your responses here I don’t expect you to recognize.

Done with your nonsense.
