Top 101 Movies of the 80s (2 Viewers)

I don't enjoy the first two Evil Dead movies as much as I admire them. The cobbling together of a decent movie with a budget of "Hey, how much money do we currently have on us?" is tremendous.
For some reason, Dead Alive never got the love the Evil Dead movies received. I would love to hear @Tick thoughts on it.

In college, we caught this movie one night, and didn't know what it was called. We went to our local video shop, that had some horror authority on staff (It was literally like, 'hey we are looking for this horror movie with a guy with a lawn mower strapped to his chest', and they call out Victor from the back room)

We bought the VHS, and would play it late night when we had women over. Laughing/gagging. I loved that movie.
Peter Jackson’s finest work

I've never seen The Goonies.
I haven’t either.
Wait, wait, WAIT!!

We have folks participating in an 80's movie draft/ranking who HAVE NEVER SEEN GOONIES!?!?!?11!11!!

:fishing:

Wait, wait, WAIT!

one of the chaps running this never saw "True Romance", as were revealed in the similar 90s thread.

MUCH more egregious, imo

OH ... HAI, KP 😁
Goonies > True Romance. And True Romance is a great movie.

i just don't think they're ... uhhh ... good enough

:clyde:

#90: GREMLINS [HBOMAX, TUBI]

My #52 pick. Is there a certain time zone we need to consider for this after midnight nonsense? I still have a blast with this movie, and it's one I think of and say "wtf was wrong with the 80s?". This is one of my first memories seeing a movie in the theater. I begged my parents to let me go, then proceeded to lose my **** as gremlins got nuked and put in a blender. I didn't even get to the cheery story of daddy getting stuck in the chimney. I am one of those kids that helped get the PG-13 rating, I guess.
My only issue with this pick is how you will find 89 movies better than Gremlins.
Well, I didn't- I found 51 other movies better. ;)

We need an eyeroll like button. ;)

To be fair, I've seen it since, and we still don't agree.

I forgot about that. I really need to incorporate that more in my "KP, put down the bong and stop watching bad movies" shtick.

ZERO issue with you not loving, or even liking, the flick.

BIG issue with not seeing it at all prior to the 90s countdown - inexcusable, imo.

im'ma leave this alone now - enjoy the thread, hope to see some favorites pop up soon.

WITNESS [PRIME, PARAMOUNT+]
A great director, Peter Weir, in peak form.
I don't think this was peak Weir... but it's a solid movie, made better by him.
Love Peter Weir. I think this completes my nods to my family. Crimes and Misdemeanors for my dad, Steel Magnolias for my wife and Witness for my mom. She loved her some Harrison Ford and this movie was a favorite growing up. Rewatched it recently and it held up really well as a romance, crime and fish out of water movie.

Is that better or worse than me having seen True Romance and not liked it?

Oh I see that was addressed above.

I’m the one to blame for the lower Goonies ranking. I like it. Just didn’t make my list. I think I saw it a little too late in life to develop such a strong relationship with it. I am a little younger than KP and most of these 80s movies, I didn’t actually see in the 80s.

as i said, no issue with critique of it at all ... just with never getting around to a sit with it, especially for such a movie mensch like KP.

I've never seen The Goonies.
No reason to now.
I think I saw it a little too late in life to develop such a strong relationship with it.
That's it. Nostalgia of this movie is tied to your age.

if you were at an age where taking off with your friends on your BMX and finding pirate treasure was the best thing you could possibly imagine, this movie was huge. It was a buddy pic for 12 year olds.

The Goonies IS the 80's.....I mean Cyndi Lauper wrote a song for it! One of the Cory's is in it! It's also got ORV's with bullet holes!, rocky road! One eyed Willie!, and rich stuff! Also.......John Matuszak with a tour de force!

There was another buddy movie released the next year that is also one of my faves.....

I saw The Goonies, in a theater, with the cast. :bowtie: It was a promotion for the Blu-Ray release. Nearly everyone still alive was still there... Joey Pantoliano, Corey Feldman, Sean Astin, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen... but when they were introduced, the largest applause from the audience was for the actress that played Rosalita the Maid. :lmao:

We've watched The Goonies with our kids at least 6-8 times I bet. We keep the DVD in our camp trailer, and we throw it on, in the evening sometimes during camping trips.....it's the most requested, along with the Sandlot, and Nacho Libre.....all classics, imo

That's another thing. I don't have kids so some of these movies didn't even a shot at a 2nd life with me. I can guarantee if I had kids, my list would look differently.

Rivers Edge was pretty good. Nice and dark and weird, though a bit overacted. Forgot just how hot Ione Skye was.
Crispin Glover is on another planet in that one.
And as mentioned earlier, probably wasn’t even acting.
I felt like I saw the movie on TCM and during the pre or post movie discussion, they mentioned that nobody- not the other actors, director, no one knew that he was going to play it like that. It took everyone back and they weren't even sure he was being serious as first.

I haven't seen it, but it's in the queue - not streaming on any of my services right now. Early Peter Jackson movie, right?

Also appears to have an alternate title, Braindead.

I have a pretty long list of zombie movies I should watch before trying to make a list. Some I saw 20 years ago (Dawn of the Dead, Army of Darkness), some I heard of this week (Ojuju, Happiness of the Katakuris), some I just never watched and expect to stink (basically anything from the 70s or 80s - Serpent and the Rainbow, Dead Heat), and some I've seen but have no real memory of (Overlord, Scoobie Doo on Zombie Island).

Is this where we admit that we’ve never seen The Goonies?
Yeah, if you are one of these weirdos who haven't seen it.

That would be a fun FFA watch party. 😆
Being a weirdo is probably not a surprise- but this would indeed be another reason. Honestly I’ve seen most of the movies so far and most of the big 80s one - but for whatever reason I never saw Goonies and it’s doubtful it would be worth it now.

my absolute favorite Letterman moment.

We are going to have movies rated way higher than Goonies for people completely missing the list and I predict the first wave of WTF??? will be coming in about 20 picks, and it will be my fault. Honestly, most of the group of movies 30-60 are ones that were just on one of our lists and there are some huge titles on that list.
