Top 101 Movies of the 80s (1 Viewer)

whatever you do, please don't watch the 90s remake instead, right @krista4 ??

Don't call me into this thread! :lmao:

I had to scroll around to see what you're talking about. Wow, so pleased to see my favorite movie so high on your lists! I knew others liked it (El Floppo shares this love with me), but I didn't expect it on this.

ETA: I expect, however, that this is where a bunch of people who've never seen it will tell you how wrong you are because it's fuuuuuurrrin and you put it above their favorite movie when they were 10 years old, so I'll back out of the thread again rather than throwing things.

That was the only reason for calling you in- I know you love the movie. Now you can go back to just scrolling the OP. ;)

Let's do the top 5!! Hopefully we don't destroy too many childhoods in the process. Although I think our top picks in a couple genres lean a bit artsy fartsy, so that is fitting.
I doubt there will be too many complaints about our top 5 other than people upset about what missed the whole 100

and the Nerds, do indeed get revenge!
and one even commits rape by deception - but luckily the chick digs it.
So movies dont /age/ well.

I quoted the Dazed and Confused line "Thats why I like High School girls. I get older and they stay the same age". My genZ kids explained to me I was being sexist and it was creepy talking about HS girls. Once my wife jumped on the band wagon, I knew I had lost.

Even in 1976, a dumb jock like Dawson knew that Wooderson's way of thinking wasn't wise:

Wooderson: [to Mitch] So, you're a freshman, right? Tell me, man, how's this year's crop of freshman chicks lookin' this year?
Dawson: Wood, you're gonna go to jail very soon, man!
Wooderson
: Naw, man. That's what I like about these high school girls; I get older, they stay the same age.
Dawson: Yes, they do.

Do the Right Thing is funny, stylish, beautifully filmed, full of great performances but also it's significant and powerful. It takes quite a movie to stir up critics like it did. 30 years later, it's as relevant as ever.
I watched School Daze a couple months ago. Does that count?
Sure- I know you are not at all a fan of Do the Right Thing- thought of you as we approached the top 25 and I knew this move was coming.

This is like the Bizarro world top 10.
Sure, if you didn't read any of our posts or understand our intent with this countdown.
Oh, I'm aware.
So the point of those posts are?
What's the point of any post critiquing or agreeing with a pick?

Again, I understand what the criteria for your lists are, but if they are going to deviate this much from what you would normally see on a top 10, you have to expect a certain amount of debate. My next 100 will have plenty of WTF picks, and I fully expect to be called out on them.

No, you were critiquing the whole thing. If you understood where we were coming from and read our posts by now the top 10-20 shouldn't be "bizarro world". It would only be that if you were expecting 80s blockbuster movies and a lot of comedies. Nothing in the post I quoted said anything about a specific pick.

I'm flattered! I don't know how I feel about the movie - I don't know if I've ever watched it all, just parts. It's more my aversion to Spike Lee.

It's one that I probably should give more of a fair chance, though.

I thought somebody flat out hated the movie around here. For some reason I had either you or otb in mind.

Must be someone else. But you can be excused for thinking it might be me!

I did think you hated it but maybe it's just Spike in general

I critiqued the 4 movies that had been revealed in the top 10. Keep in mind, I'm also half joking as I have been most of the thread, since I am aware of the criteria you are using. But still, the amount of movies missing from the list is staggering. I guess it was just a really good decade for movies.

#5: BLADE RUNNER

80s' #6 pick, and my #12 pick. I probably don't need to talk too much about the movies in the top 5. I'd be interested if people have seen some of these though. I have always loved intelligent sci-fi and this one is near the top for that.

An all timer. Holds up well for a SciFi too. Just watched on HBO Max a few nights ago coincidentally. Makes my top 5 but not top 10. I'm assuming we have another Harrison Ford film coming up here.

Is this to be an empathy test? Capillary dilation of the so-called blush response? Fluctuation of the pupil. Involuntary dilation of the iris...
I'm going to let the one major outlier go. You're all right @KarmaPolice .
Hmm. I gotta ask - are we still talking Raiders here, or one of your faves you are thinking are not going to be revealed?
Raiders

I've moved on from this glaring oversight and have chalked it up to a "blindspot."

I actually didn’t even think of it and should have. Great movie - one of the best NYC movies.

Very fair point. I'd guess the Greek counsel has a large say in what type of events are at said competition.
It was an unwise move deciding on the belching contest though. No athleticism needed whatsoever and Ogre was weak sauce at it.
Absolutely **** belch.
hair pie... not something you really hear any more.
No, not since breakfast.

We should try to write an entire movie comprised entirely of memorable quotes from other movies.

This was one I didn’t see until I was older as well, ended up springing for the Ultimate Collectors Edition that came in a briefcase

I was underwhelmed, but probably because I was watching it 25 years after it came out and had too high of expectations. On repeat viewings I came to appreciate it more
