Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (1 Viewer)

Thanks KP for inviting me and doing the calculating and posting. It was fun and I had no idea what was coming through most of the countdown so it was always a surprise for me too. I had no clue how the lists would look and how it would shape the countdown.

Thank you for submitting a list and taking some mild heat off my crappy movie tastes and balancing the countdown.

Amadeus and Brazil are on order through the library, so start dusting off those 80s movies .

Ha, the 80s has such a different vibe than the 90s movie. More pressure on me for this one.

Trainspotting is one that came immediately to mind for me also. One of my all time favorites.

No doubt.  I had it at #5.  Have you seen the sequel?  I've heard good things but still haven't got around to it.

In the same realm, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels definitely makes my Top 100

While I am waiting for those (one had a long wait list, I think Amadeus) I think I am going to re-fire up Paramount+ for a month to watch the new Scream.  But also that is where the Indy trilogy is, and it looks like it's in 4K.  I might have to try those for a rewatch.

More underrated

This Boys Life - young Leo, DeNiro and Ellen Barkin.  DeNiros character might be one of the all time ####bags ever put on film.

You can get it doggy-style or you can get it laying on your side. Those are your only choices. This is my house and I get to say. Got it?

or getting pissed that someone threw away a jar of mustard with a minuscule amount left

also one of my favorite movie quotes from Leo “I tell you I’m thirsty and you offer me a sandwich.  Thank you and #### you

    I was in HS when these came out, and had 0 reason or desire to see them.   Still have had 0 desire to see them.   I am guessing I've seen quite a bit of Home Alone, but never have sat down to watch it.
My kids LOVE it!  We watch it every Christmas.

Few more omissions.....Friday, Outside Providence, and Half Baked.....what can I say?  I like comedies.  I mean don't get me wrong, Schindler's List and Silence of the Lambs are great movies, but pretty heavy.  I think I've seen silence a couple times.....schindlers I saw it once when it came out.....I'm good, don't need to see it again.

It's funny cuz my wife is more into the crime drama, heavy, thriller ####......I like to laugh when I watch movies......I mean not always, but movies like eyes wide shut......I'm falling asleep on the couch.

Thanks for doing this!  It's fun to banter back and forth about this ####.....and I will be going back over the list for new watches and revisits.

Thursday - I feel like this was unfairly labeled a Pulp Fiction knockoff.  Even if it was it was damn entertaining, and Paulina Porizkova’s Dallas has one of the greatest jackets off all time.  Also you get Thomas Jane and Arron Eckhart trying to out-badass each other

Speaking of Eckhart, he’s also great in another dark comedy In The Company of Men…is Chad is definitely a “Chad”.  Definitely some misogynistic themes that probably don’t hold up well, and I recall someone saying they hate Neil LaBute (probably @otb_lifer )

nice pull.  Forgot about that one.  Baldwin calling the kid Dildo :lmao:

But I mean seriously, how did Gump not make it?  I was waiting for it and when it kept not showin up I figured ok, it's in the top 5........but oh no, didn't make the cut?? Mind blown....

I just didn't like it and I can not explain how that movie became such a phenomena. How it made $700 million in the 90s and won all these awards, had everyone doing impressions and quoting it. Hell, it even got a restaurant chain. How? It makes no sense to me and I lived through it.

It was a fun thread but a poorly constructed list from the start.

Well Tom Hanks.....and it was kind of a feel good deal, with a great soundtrack....and it was kinda unique too...and it had Lieutenant Dan!.....I dunno not every movie has to have a genius cannibal, or Steve Buscemi getting fed into a wood chipper.

The rest of 80s' Top 100:

SCENT OF A WOMAN ...HoooHAH is this terrible.

BUFFALO 66

ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER

SENSE & SENSIBILITY

FALLEN ANGELS

HOWARD'S END

REMAINS OF THE DAY

GET SHORTY

OFFICE SPACE

A SIMPLE PLAN

METROPOLITAN
Other than the Pacino at his most insufferable, would've found a spot for these too (although maybe not all of the period pieces which I might not even know the difference between at this point).

Surprised at Office Spaces omission tbh.

Big fan of shifter cars and Buff 66. Gallo used to live in the neighborhood.

Also nice to see Metropolitan in there. I forget the directors name, but I liked his vibe.

The rest of KP's Top 100:

TOTAL RECALL

GATTACA

GROSSE POINT BLANK

THREE KINGS

STARSHIP TROOPERS

12 MONKEYS

THE STRAIGHT STORY

AMERICAN HISTORY X

MEN IN BLACK

RUN LOLA RUN
I'd have found a place for these...nice to see Straight Story in there- hadnt thought of it, but hot damn I love Farnsworth (not sure when the Grey Fox is from, but it's wonderful).

I looooove the art direction for Gattaca, which is enough for me.

Recall has a soft spot for me, and it's a fun movie.

Surprised a bit by Lola's absence. Loved Tykwers next two, Princess and Warrior and Heaven...can't remember if they're 90s though

.MIB is a pretty great blockbuster.

Other stuff....

I mentioned Europa Europa.

I'm an Egoyan fan and probably prefer The Adjuster and Exotica to Sweet Hereafter on a given day.

Fresh was a pretty great coming of age film.

Welcome to the Doghouse the only Haynes film I can stomache, and I genuinely like it.

Leigh's Secrets and Lies stunned me.

I'm sure there's a Jarmusch film from the 90s that's worthwhile to include...Ghostdog?

I remember digging Daytrippers (speaking of Parker Posey)

Absolutely Freeway.

Somebody else mentioned Kicking and Screaming...Baumbachs first, not the soccer thing. but there was also Walking and Talking.

Bob Roberts probably would hold up and be eerily prescient.

Wiikid mentioned Ed Wood, my favorite Burton movie.

The Swingers guy followed up with Go, which I remember liking a lot (not sure if the Rave scene would hold up)

Was Crimes and Misdemeanors in the 90s? Peak Woody.

I'm sure I'll remember more or get reminded by others...

Some more...

Another Leigh- Naked

I've mentioned When the Cats Away elsewhere...loved it.

I remember thinking the Dreamlife of Angels was stunning, but haven't seen it since and don't really remember it other than liking it a ton.

*Shudder*...Breaking the Waves. Guh. The only movie I waffles between loving and hating...all while watching the movie. Not sure about this.

Damn someone mentioned above, I forgot about American History X. Great movie.

Other glaring omissions: Gump, Enemy of the State, and hello "footballguys"....RUDY?

Well Tom Hanks.....and it was kind of a feel good deal, with a great soundtrack....and it was kinda unique too...and it had Lieutenant Dan!.....I dunno not every movie has to have a genius cannibal, or Steve Buscemi getting fed into a wood chipper.
Yeah I get it being well liked and the soundtrack was great but just the level to which it permeated culture is really strange. We were under mass hypnosis or something. A restaurant chain based on a movie about a cognitively challenged Vietnam veteran with elite athletic skills. That is crazy.

Yeah, but, John, if The Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists.

#4:  JURASSIC PARK

My #4 and 80s' #14.     This one still gets me and makes me feel like a damn kid looking at the dinosaurs in amazement.    IMO has to be in the conversation of best summer blockbusters of all time.    Any movie that still taps into that sense of wonder and makes me feel like a kid for a couple hours is going to get high marks.    About the only other movies that still do that for me are my core of 80s loves.
Introduced my 6yr daughter to JP last week for family movie night.  Still holds up and she loved it.

Besides people's personal preference in those comedies and action movies listed, here are some movies that I thought would get the biggest "HTF did this not make the countdown?"s:

Reservoir Dogs, Tombstone, True Romance, Gump, Rounders, Jerry Magurie, Beautiful Girls
Every single one of these not making the top 50 is an absolute WTF for me. Huge WTF’s.

Here's my list of movies that made my top 100 that were not included (in descending order)

School Ties - Damon, Affleck, Frasier - I always liked this film even though it's critically panned for some obvious reasons.

True Lies - Solid action flick top to bottom, cheesy and unrealistic, but makes my top 100 barely

Singles - quintessential 90s...probably the most definitive mainstream grunge film with sweet cameos by Vedder, AIC and others

Forrest Gump - I like different and this was different, probably over ranked by some but deserves to be in the top 100

Presumed Innocent - One of Ford's best, and overlooked performances...and chick attorney was smoking hot.  Dennehe and Julia so good too.

The Piano - Brody was awesome and I thought the dialogue was excellent and the story compelling

True Romance - just really well done, you were rooting for the protagonists

American History X - this one didn't age well for me, lacked some realism IMHO, but also was groundbreaking for the subject matter/story at the time

Total Recall - Not exactly high brow, but a ton of fun

Office Space - one of the better comedies of the decade...I can see people that haven't worked in corporate america or in tech not connecting with this at all.

Starship Troopers - I can see why this doesn't make a lot of lists, it's got a unique flavor with the comedic/sarcastic overtones

Leaving Las Vegas - I'm not a depressing movie guy, but loved this one, surprised it didn't make the cut

The Fifth Element - one of the better SciFi's of the decade but has a comedic element that could throw some off

12 Monkeys - Man I love this one but I rate Sci Fi higher than most.

Rounders - if you play poker, you get it...but Norton and Damon are terrific, Malkovich too.

The Talented Mr. Ripley - Loved it, highlighted by peak Law and SeymourHoffman...cast is terrific, dialogue terrific, sets terrific

***Glaring Omission Tier***

New Jack City - I just associate the early 90s with this movie, iconic for many.  Dialogue is spotty and the acting is inconsistent, but too iconic to not make my top 50

Friday - glaring omission for me.  Here in California this is culture and perhaps the most iconic for the West Coast.  If you hated the SuperBowl halftime show, this isn't in your top 100.

Reservoir Dogs - if you don't like Tarantino I get it, I'm not a fan boy but do like most of his work...couldn't leave it out of my top 50

Beautiful Girls - God I love this film.  Easily in my top 50.   Cast is awesome.  Dialogue is awesome.   One of the few movies of its type that I'll rewatch.

Gattaca - another Sci Fi classic but with style and sophistication and ominous themes

Contact - I'm partial to SciFi, and this was my highest ranked Sci Fi of the decade.

Leon the Professional - gripping story, great acting, easy top 50 for me

Home Alone - Iconic...the house is a tourist attraction for the love of God, John Hughes is a legend.   There are few films more Americana than Home Alone.

The Crow - One of my favorites of the decade and in my top 25.   The imagery is epic.  If you don't like dark I can see this not being your bag of chips.

Tombstone - One of the ten best westerns of all time.  Dialogue can be spotty, as was some of the acting...but Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday, too good.  Second highest ranked Western of the decade in what was a weak decade for Westerns.

Searching for Bobby Fischer - Makes my personal top 10 for the decade.   I love this movie.  Kingsley, the kid, the parents.  I think this is close to a perfect film.
