again ...thank you both
Well, as somebody who usually avoids Christmas movies too....awesome as a part of a family Christmas movie watching set
I mean at least top 10 ...
Thank you for submitting a list and taking some mild heat off my crappy movie tastes and balancing the countdown. Thanks KP for inviting me and doing the calculating and posting. It was fun and I had no idea what was coming through most of the countdown so it was always a surprise for me too. I had no clue how the lists would look and how it would shape the countdown.
Ha, the 80s has such a different vibe than the 90s movie. More pressure on me for this one.Thank you for submitting a list and taking some mild heat off my crappy movie tastes and balancing the countdown.
Amadeus and Brazil are on order through the library, so start dusting off those 80s movies .![]()
Trainspotting is one that came immediately to mind for me also. One of my all time favorites.
While I am waiting for those (one had a long wait list, I think Amadeus) I think I am going to re-fire up Paramount+ for a month to watch the new Scream. But also that is where the Indy trilogy is, and it looks like it's in 4K. I might have to try those for a rewatch.Ha, the 80s has such a different vibe than the 90s movie. More pressure on me for this one.
My kids LOVE it! We watch it every Christmas.I was in HS when these came out, and had 0 reason or desire to see them. Still have had 0 desire to see them. I am guessing I've seen quite a bit of Home Alone, but never have sat down to watch it.
Well, as somebody who usually avoids Christmas movies too....
I think I got PTSD watching trainspotting when I was really high......the baby on the ceiling.....I'm good seeing that one once.Trainspotting is one that came immediately to mind for me also. One of my all time favorites.
nice pull. Forgot about that one. Baldwin calling the kid DildoFew more omissions.....Friday, Outside Providence, and Half Baked.....what can I say? I like comedies. I mean don't get me wrong, Schindler's List and Silence of the Lambs are great movies, but pretty heavy. I think I've seen silence a couple times.....schindlers I saw it once when it came out.....I'm good, don't need to see it again.
It's funny cuz my wife is more into the crime drama, heavy, thriller ####......I like to laugh when I watch movies......I mean not always, but movies like eyes wide shut......I'm falling asleep on the couch.
I’ve still never seen itBut I mean seriously, how did Gump not make it? I was waiting for it and when it kept not showin up I figured ok, it's in the top 5........but oh no, didn't make the cut?? Mind blown....
Definitely more on the fartsy side of the artsy fartsy spectrum. Which is apparently where I livenice pull. Forgot about that one. Baldwin calling the kid Dildo![]()
I just didn't like it and I can not explain how that movie became such a phenomena. How it made $700 million in the 90s and won all these awards, had everyone doing impressions and quoting it. Hell, it even got a restaurant chain. How? It makes no sense to me and I lived through it.But I mean seriously, how did Gump not make it? I was waiting for it and when it kept not showin up I figured ok, it's in the top 5........but oh no, didn't make the cut?? Mind blown....
Yeah I thought you were referring to Titanic when you were talking about the biggest movie of the 90s.Jurassic Park made the list. That's good.
It's a good movie. You should watch it.....I mean it's no thin red line or magnolia....I’ve still never seen it
It was a fun thread but a poorly constructed list from the start. But I mean seriously, how did Gump not make it? I was waiting for it and when it kept not showin up I figured ok, it's in the top 5........but oh no, didn't make the cut?? Mind blown....
Well I can see why that wouldn't make your guys' list.Yeah I thought you were referring to Titanic when you were talking about the biggest movie of the 90s.
Well Tom Hanks.....and it was kind of a feel good deal, with a great soundtrack....and it was kinda unique too...and it had Lieutenant Dan!.....I dunno not every movie has to have a genius cannibal, or Steve Buscemi getting fed into a wood chipper.I just didn't like it and I can not explain how that movie became such a phenomena. How it made $700 million in the 90s and won all these awards, had everyone doing impressions and quoting it. Hell, it even got a restaurant chain. How? It makes no sense to me and I lived through it.
Other than the Pacino at his most insufferable, would've found a spot for these too (although maybe not all of the period pieces which I might not even know the difference between at this point). The rest of 80s' Top 100:
SCENT OF A WOMAN ...HoooHAH is this terrible.
BUFFALO 66
ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER
SENSE & SENSIBILITY
FALLEN ANGELS![]()
HOWARD'S END
REMAINS OF THE DAY
GET SHORTY
OFFICE SPACE
A SIMPLE PLAN
METROPOLITAN
I'd have found a place for these...nice to see Straight Story in there- hadnt thought of it, but hot damn I love Farnsworth (not sure when the Grey Fox is from, but it's wonderful). The rest of KP's Top 100:
TOTAL RECALL
GATTACA
GROSSE POINT BLANK
THREE KINGS
STARSHIP TROOPERS
12 MONKEYS
THE STRAIGHT STORY
AMERICAN HISTORY X
MEN IN BLACK
RUN LOLA RUN
A few core ones, but not a ton.wait ...you don't watch Christmas movies with your family?
A few core ones, but not a ton.wait ...you don't watch Christmas movies with your family?
Yeah I get it being well liked and the soundtrack was great but just the level to which it permeated culture is really strange. We were under mass hypnosis or something. A restaurant chain based on a movie about a cognitively challenged Vietnam veteran with elite athletic skills. That is crazy.Well Tom Hanks.....and it was kind of a feel good deal, with a great soundtrack....and it was kinda unique too...and it had Lieutenant Dan!.....I dunno not every movie has to have a genius cannibal, or Steve Buscemi getting fed into a wood chipper.
i hate RudyDamn someone mentioned above, I forgot about American History X. Great movie.
Other glaring omissions: Gump, Enemy of the State, and hello "footballguys"....RUDY?
Introduced my 6yr daughter to JP last week for family movie night. Still holds up and she loved it.KarmaPolice said:Yeah, but, John, if The Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists.
#4: JURASSIC PARK
My #4 and 80s' #14. This one still gets me and makes me feel like a damn kid looking at the dinosaurs in amazement. IMO has to be in the conversation of best summer blockbusters of all time. Any movie that still taps into that sense of wonder and makes me feel like a kid for a couple hours is going to get high marks. About the only other movies that still do that for me are my core of 80s loves.
About the same, but we have our core Elf/Scrooged/Emmet Otter/Grinch that we watch.don't know about everyone else, but we do a couple of nights worth of Christmas movies as a family every year
A lot if cheesy Teen movies I love more than I should, and Varsity Blues is at the top of the list.i hate Rudy
id put Varsity Blue, the Program and Necessary Roughness all ahead of it
Every single one of these not making the top 50 is an absolute WTF for me. Huge WTF’s.Besides people's personal preference in those comedies and action movies listed, here are some movies that I thought would get the biggest "HTF did this not make the countdown?"s:
Reservoir Dogs, Tombstone, True Romance, Gump, Rounders, Jerry Magurie, Beautiful Girls
I'll mix it up from year to year.About the same, but we have our core Elf/Scrooged/Emmet Otter/Grinch that we watch.
The newest one is terrible, the OG is awesome.I'll mix it up from year to year.
Last year, no kids or old people were around so we went with three different versions of Black Christmas
Agreed. The 2006 is not bad, worlds better than the 2019. First and last time I watch that oneThe newest one is terrible, the OG is awesome.
That was me. But hopefully otb agrees with me.speaking of Eckhart, he’s also great in another dark comedy In The Company of Men…is Chad is definitely a “Chad”. Definitely some misogynistic themes that probably don’t hold up well, and I recall someone saying they hate Neil LaBute (probably @otb_lifer )
I thought Christmas Vacation was but it's 1989.Movies that I thought were 90s but are not
Boiler Room (2000)
Roadhouse (1989)
