Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (1 Viewer)

Anybody listen to "The Rewatchables" podcast?  Bill Simmons talks about some of the most rewatchable movies of all time.  Several of these were covered and Casino was one of them.

The crux of the Casino episode is that it was better for many upon rewatching.

To me Casino gets #### on because it is always compared to Goodfellas, but had Goodfellas never happened, Casino would get much more love in the rankings world.

I loved the movie and is easily top 25 of .
One of my favorite pods.  Very enjoyable but I’m a bit of a movie geek.

Also completely agree with your Casino take   Easy top 25 for me too

Yeah I can’t wrap my brain around this.

By happen stance I’ve watch both Casino and Apollo 13 is the past week (both were on tv) and both are such great moves.
Remember- 50% of these movies are just on one if our lists.   I didn't have As Good or Casino ranked at all, and yes - had South Park slightly ahead of Apollo 13.

Long story short, be glad for 80s or Casino wouldn't be on the list.

And trust me, I am guessing there will be worse omissions from my list after all is said and done than Casino and Dazed and Confused.

Also don't forget that this isn't twenty movie buffs coming up with a list and submitting it so that outliers get muted. It's two people who are subjectively rating the movies they've seen. There's not a lot of way for outliers to be bumped down. You're pretty much getting the subjective interpretation of two guys.

Totally, but it makes it fun for those of us that have seen all the movies to beat up the rankers.  :boxing:

Oh yeah, no doubt. And all in good fun, too. I'm just saying that the outliers will be more prominent, even on a subjective message board list because of the sheer few number of people doing it.

In a super weird tie, these were each of our #69 and #71 movies.

69/70:

JFK

CANDYMAN

look into the mirror and say "Back... and to the left" 5 times...

I just love the atmosphere, locations and story of Candyman.   Holds up so well.   JFK is bonkers, but I will always get sucked into watching this anytime it's on.   What an amazing cast.

Candyman is an all time horror flick and seems appropriately ranked here.

JFK also a great movie, but the storytelling could have been a bit more clean.

So is As Good As It Gets. James Brooks, absolute genius.

Yep and neither of us set out to make some kind of official list, it's totally personal. If I didn't like a movie, I didn't put it on there regardless of it's scores on IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes or ranking on other lists.

It's welcome

I was too young to see it when it came out and by the time I was old enough to rent it, it was off the radar. I've just never been interested - particularly now since Sean Penn is one of my very least favorite people.

well, it captures the early 80s high school scene era perfectly.  The soundtrack is epic.

I loved the movie and is easily top 25 of the decade for me, but I love most Scorsese and all things Vegas.
One of my go-tos.   I don't love their categories, but like the takes and humor.

You've seen all the movies listed?
I've only not seen two listed thus far.

I watch everything.  No kids and 47 years old.  Also traveled a lot in my profession which lent itself to me watching most movies once streaming apps became a thing.

You've seen that many movies, but didn't develop any taste in movies?    :pokey:    :P

What are the two that you haven't seen?

I have pretty strong opinions on movies, but like music, there are no right or wrong answers.  Everybody has a different mind/soul/body/history/perspective...can't discount that.

Correction.  Actually haven't seen these three but may add to my short term list.
Nice, would have bet that Live Flesh was one of them. My dad was a huge Woody Allen fan so I saw almost everything of his. I didn't care for a lot of his movies but the ones I did like (generally ones that weren't so mature that they would go over the head of a kid) really stuck with me. Manhattan Murder Mystery isn't the best Woody movie or the best murder mystery but I enjoy Woody's persona with Diane Keaton playing detective.

I will post a couple more before I take off for a bit again.   I start off the night with getting roasted and post 80s #37 flick first:

#65:   GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS

Doing it this way, I can just @Ilov80s when a movie comes up that is on his list but not mine so he can comment.

96 - THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER

93 -  POINT BREAK

91 - THE FUGITIVE

85 -  MAN ON THE MOON

82 -  CASINO

81 -  APOLLO 13

80 -  MISERY

For me, these are the most underranked movies thus far.   I'll release my list when it is appropriate.

Of course, and I am the same way.    The bolded is one of the main reasons I like talking movies with people.   I love seeing how different people view the exact same thing differently.

I'm in the middle on Woody Allen...his stuff is average to good for me usually.  Rarely amazing or terrible...always somewhere in the middle.

My work was giving away Christmas raffle gifts one year and I won a set of steak knives. At least I didn't get fired.

Speaking of great casts. Pacino, Lemmon, Baldwin,  Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey. That is 4 Oscar winners for acting. Plus the Mamet script is so fun, this had to be an absolute dream role for an actor.

So… it’s not on your list at all. Ok…
It's the confusing thing about this.  I think both of us probably thought we'd have more like 60-70 movies in common.   I think it works out well though - the top 30 are 100% movies that we both had on our lists and rated fairly well.   Then starting in the 30s-40s we will get the personal favorites ie- his #2 is a movie not on my list, and my #9 is one not on his list.  Then it's a blending of the two.

Maybe I should have color coded this #### or something.

Taking off is for closers.

And now my #37 movie...

#64:  AUDITION

:scared:   What movie can make a duffle bag, a phone call, piano wire and a beautiful Japanese woman so disturbing and terrifying?   This one was another key point for me falling in love with horror movies again, and started me on the path of seeking out more foreign horror movies.   Messed me up, but I always have to tell people to stick it our past the first 30mins or more, as the build up is slow.

Great cast too. Great movie and better than Dazed IMO.
hmmm...

I've definitely watched Fast Times many more times and it has more individual scenes that I like but Dazed creates a more authentic feel and generally interesting world to me overall.  Tough call.
