Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (1 Viewer)

I saw it somewhat recently... the athlete friend storyline and acting didn't really- but the rest has held up really well, albeit a little preachy (from the standpoint of everything we NOW know... but didn't then). great movie and such an incredible debut from Singleton. Poetic Justice was a pretty decent followup- thought Janet and Tupac were good in it... but then the wheels fell off with HIgher Learning.. such a turd- and I think he was trying to reference some of Spike Lee's approach with Flat characters acting flat/stereotyped to further the story or theme, but none of it worked.
Higher Learning was good. Fight me.

Oh, there's one more thing about Tracy I think you should know...

#30:  ELECTION

This was the one we were close on.   My #54, 80s' #43.    I think this this hits home because a lot of us either did our do have a Tracy in our lives.   Maybe a Mr. McAllister too.    The abrupt shifts in the voiceover like the above (there's a reason I didn't post the whole quote if you've seen the movie) had me rolling.   I like just about anything Perrotta has done and the stuff that has been based on his works.

I have this barely making my top 100 cut.   Above average movie that I don't care to see again.   Great dialogue, well casted, great acting, funny.  The plot/story just doesn't do enough for me to put it in the top 50.

Hope you love subtitles and long movies.
So subtitles don't bother you, but voice overs are a deal breaker?  You my friend, are an enigma wrapped in a conundrum.....also, Jackie Brown ain't sniffin top Tarantino movie.....you know it, and I know it.....everyone knows it.

Sincerely,

Peanut gallery

The future's not set. There's no fate but what we make for ourselves.

#21  TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY

My 38, 80s' 24.    I don't think I had seen the original before this one blew me away in the theater.   I thought the liquid metal f/x was going the be the apex of movies.   Add that to my love of time travel anything, and I was hooked.   Now it doesn't look quite so great, but Linda Hamilton still is.  What a blast to watch.
This one is in my top 10 for the decade.....great follow up to Terminator.   I watched it not long ago, and stands the test of time, imo.

Movies I haven't seen in the top 50 thus far

The Player

Three Colors Red

Underground

Brighter Summer Day

Really looking forward to knocking these out.

Same.  Heard good things about The Player as I was a big fan of Swimming With Sharks but never got around to it.  The others don't ring a bell.

Deal bleaker? No.   Something that can bother me? Oh yeah.    But, like I admitted I say I hate them, but some of my favorite movies have it.  Like anything else it can be used as a crutch, IMO.  I say we have examples of good and bad coming up.

I agree with whst someone else said, Jackie is his most consistent and I would say mature for him.   Others have higher highs, but they come with lower lows that bother me, so their rankings vary more for me.

Jackie was a good flick, but it just didn't do it for me, relative to a few other Tarantino's. Theres a couple in the 90's that I much prefer.  Django, and Inglorious Basterds blow Jackie outta water for me as well......honestly I HATE subtitles but in Basterds I don't mind because it's just such a great movie....I'd rank Jackie slightly above the Kill Bills.

It's like a great album for me- it can't be truly great if i want to skip tracks.   Same with his movies- for me there are skippable songs.  Mostly when he gets to his grind house violence, overuse of the N word, and mimicking movies he saw at the video store portion of the program.

Django way too campy for me and I have it near the bottom.

Inglorious is a masterpiece.

Kill Bills somewhere in the middle...I rate 1 much higher than 2.

I have them in tiers.  At the bottom is Death Proof and Hateful Eight.

I go back and forth on Hateful eight, but I tend to agree both are in the bottom half.  Hateful Eight closer to the middle for me.  But I love Westerns.

Also, I have subtitles on 90% of the time when I am watching stuff, so they don't bother me at all.  I would have missed some of the best movies experiences of my life if I still didn't tolerate subtitles.

I don't, one of my least favorite genres, so it did have a strike against it.  Django has that western feel too.

Makes my top 10, so slightly undervalued for me.   But I like dark, and this movie is about as dark as dark can get.  Freeman, Paltrow and Spacey terrific.  Cinematography and general set design epic.  Pitt was just okay for me, not terrible, not amazing...I think he nailed the final scene but was a bit out of his league in some of the earlier scenes.

Speaking of dark, I'm assuming 8mm didn't make the cut...now that's a dark ### film.
I think Pitt was what he needed to be here.  If it seems like he didn't bring much depth of character, it's because Det. Mills was a character with little depth.  He loved his wife but otherwise he was pure bravado until the end.

What's this war in the heart of nature? Why does nature vie with itself? The land contend with the sea? Is there an avenging power in nature? Not one power, but two?

#20:  THE THIN RED LINE

Speaking of voice over!!  My #19 movie and 80s' #42.   For those not keeping tabs, yes - that means both of us had this ranked higher than private Ryan.   I don't love all of Malick's movies, but sometimes his juxtaposition of nature vs. lives of man just hits me in that sweet spot.   It's one of those movies that I like more and more as I watch it and get something different out of depending on the setting and mood.  Dynamite cast as well.

I laughed really hard at this post because I was pretty sure The Thin Red Line was coming up and it’s basically all voiceover.

I love Malick films but I also admit they are very slow and I can see how it’s a snooze fest to many people.

one of my worst theater experiences was upon catching opening night of the the "Badlands" revival (late 90s?), at the Angelika.

buncha precious morons cackling throughout, fully unaware that the "downhome" politeness in the Sheen/Spacek dialogue was not playing for laughs.

i walked out.  left my date.

went to Dafoe's MATCH, and got a ginormous bag on.

I need to give “The Thin Red Line” a rewatch. I saw it in the theatre in college with a friend, who was decidedly not into the slow-moving and voiceover type of stuff. I think it impacted the experience a bit, as I’ve since come to enjoy Malick’s stuff like Days of Heaven and Badlands.

I hear a lot of people complain about voiceover in films, especially some of the Scorsese ones.

But this film overdosed on voiceover so much, during the second half, I found myself talking to my TV saying "Just shut the F' up already!..."

That's definitely not a recommendation.

Saw it in college and did not like it.  I need to try a re-watch to see if my much more sophisticated, adulting self will enjoy it more......maybe we'll dine on caviar and bacon wrapped dates whilst viewing....anyone know which boxed wine would go best with caviar?

Like I said, #20 will be the most polarizing, especially when you guys put it next to one's you are going to say WTF wasn't this on the list.
