2023 FBG Subscriber Contest (1 Viewer)

Week 14 started with 6 folks still eligible for @Joe Bryant extra $100 prize. Today we mourn the loss of... NOBODY!!! Yes, we did lose @(HULK) and @scottybo for the finals, but both made it to the final 250, so we have 6 folks collecting Joe's offering.

Let's congratulate the following for advancing to the finals:
Page 10 - @ZWK @Balco
Page 9 - @firstseason1988
Page 8 - @BroncosFan07

Of note
- I would've been in the finals if not for week 12. Dag nabbit!

Best of luck to our 4 finalists. @Joe Bryant - please instruct the 6 winners on how to collect their dough, and thanx once again for the best FFL contest on the internet! Can't wait for the playoff contest!

Congrats!

The winners can send me a PM here with their regular mailing address and we'll send a check. If they like, instead of a check, they can opt for 2 years of our Hall Of Fame subscription level to be added to whatever they have. ($191.76 value) If you'd like to do the subscription, include your email address in the PM.

13 Roosters started the contest with all 5 of our most widely-owned playoff players (LaPorta, Mostert, Howell, Dotson, Flowers) as well as 1 of the next 2 (either Ferguson or Kamara).
  • 0 were eliminated weeks 1-6... 100% survival
  • 3 were eliminated week 7... 77% survival
  • 0 were eliminated week 8... 100% survival
  • 1 was eliminated week 9... 90% survival
  • 1 was eliminated week 10... 89% survival
  • 2 were eliminated week 11... 75% survival
  • 0 were eliminated weeks 12-13... 100% survival
  • 4 were eliminated week 14... 33% survival
  • 2 made the playoffs... Roosters 103787 and 108057... congrats to them! One each with Ferguson and Kamara.
That high week 14 elimination number (the only week where these teams had a worse survival rate than the contest average) presumably due to a pair of week 14 byes coupled with a poor outing from LaPorta.

I swear to everything that I only did one iteration (at 11:30pm last night):

QB Sam Howell - $80.00
RB Travis Etienne Jr. - $230.00
RB Kenneth Walker III - $190.00
RB Jaylen Warren - $110.00
RB Raheem Mostert - $100.00

RB Zack Moss - $40.00
RB Kyle Juszczyk - $30.00
WR Calvin Ridley - $210.00
WR Christian Watson - $200.00
WR Romeo Doubs - $90.00
WR Hunter Renfrow - $80.00
WR Justyn Ross - $50.00
WR Cedric Tillman - $30.00
WR Tank Dell - $30.00
WR Puka Nacua - $30.00
TE Darren Waller - $170.00
TE Juwan Johnson - $90.00
TE Dawson Knox - $80.00
TE Taysom Hill - $80.00
PK Cameron Dicker - $40.00
PK Greg Zuerlein - $40.00
PK Graham Gano - $40.00
TD New Orleans Saints - $60.00
TD Jacksonville Jaguars - $40.00

Well somehow this team made it all the way to week 14, only to be snuffed out. I can't complain, it's a minor miracle that it made it this far. Like I said in the original post, that was my one and only iteration, which just goes to show what I've been coming to accept over the last several years: fantasy football is all luck.

:'(

I'm on to my first finals! And running pretty strong, to boot-- finishes of 54th, 17th, and 50th the last three weeks.

Final analysis of my roster in terms of marginal points per dollar (which, to reiterate, is not really the important metric for performance, but I wanted to get a look at opportunity costs.)

0.5 points per dollar-- Anthony Richardson (7.45 points, $15). Counted once in a week I cleared by 45.
7.0 ppd-- Brock Purdy (84.3 points, $12). Counted seven times, though none were season-savers.
6.2 ppd-- Jordan Love (55.75 points, $9). Counted six times, though none were season-savers.
(Glitch in the Matrix: in Weeks 2 and 3 Love scored 27.85 and the rest of my roster combined scored 172.70, leading to back-to-back scores of 200.55.)

1.6 ppd-- James Conner (32 points, $20). Counted six times, none were season-savers.
6.1 ppd-- Alvin Kamara (90.9 points, $15). Counted ten times (every week he's played), including one season-saver (added 15.7, cleared by 6.6).
12.2 ppd-- Raheem Mostert (121.9 points, $10). Counted nine times, but none were season-savers.
0.4 ppd-- Matt Breida (1.6 points, $4). Counted once. Wanted to bet on a Barkley injury, but forgot Breida and the Giants suck.
21.3 ppd-- Kyren Williams (85.1 points, $4). Counted seven times, none were season-savers.
12.3 ppd-- Zach Moss (49.1 points, $4). Counted five times, none were season-savers. Super cheap bet on the Taylor holdout running long with handcuff potential beyond that.
(My top pick underwhelmed, but the other five-- sans Breida-- have been monsters.)

2.6 ppd-- Chris Olave (70.7 points, $27). Counted ten times, none were season-savers.
2.3 ppd-- Tyler Lockett (43.9 points, $19). Counted seven times, none were season-savers.
2.2 ppd-- Jahan Dotson (30.3 points, $14). Counted five times, none were season-savers.
0.0 ppd-- Rashod Bateman (0 points, $11). Urgh.
0.6 ppd-- Elijah Moore (7 points, $11). Counted SIX TIMES, added <1 marginal point in five of them and a whopping +3.2 in the sixth. (Ralph Wiggum "I'm Helping" gif.)
0.5 ppd-- Marvin Mims (3.7 points, $8). Reverse Elijah Moore. Posted 20.3 points in Week 2. That's... pretty much it.
5.1 ppd-- Jayden Reed (35.8 points, $7). Counted six times, none were season-savers.
0.0 ppd-- Justyn Ross (0 points, $5). Still a better pick than Rashod Bateman.
(By far my worst unit, Reed is looking like my only good pick, which is disgusting with $102 spent. I've only flexed seven receivers all year. Woooooof.)

4.4 ppd-- Dalton Kincaid (43.9 points, $10). Counted zero times in the first six weeks, then six times in the next six, including one season-saver in Week 7.
9.9 ppd-- Sam LaPorta (88.7 points, $9). Counted ten times (tied for the most of anyone), but none were season-savers.
8.1 ppd-- Jake Ferguson (48.7 points, $6). Counted five times, no season-savers.
2.8 ppd-- Luke Musgrave (16.8 points, $6). Counted four times, no season-savers.
(Incredible value: I've used at least one flex at TE in 9 of 14 weeks, including two weeks were both of my flexes were TEs and four weeks where a TE was my top-scoring non-flex. All for $31.)

6.1 ppd-- Jake Elliott (30.3 points, $5). Counted seven times, but none were season-savers.
8.8 ppd-- Greg Zuerlein (35.0 points, $4). Thought the Rodgers injury would sink him, but he's been okay. Counted five times, no season-savers.
6.0 ppd-- Wil Lutz (24.0 points, $4). Has only counted twice all year. Saved my season both times (+8.9 when I cleared by 6.6, +15.1 when I cleared by 12.25). My official mascot.
Overall, the unit gave me 14.8ppg for $13.

7.1 ppd-- Dallas Defense (50 points, $7). Counted six times, no season-savers.
5.3 ppd-- Denver Defense (21 points, $4). Counted eight times, only added 5, 4, 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, and 1 points, no season-savers.
Overall, the unit gave me 10.3ppg for $11.

Positional comparison:
RB -- $57 spent on 6 players, 19.8 points per start, plus ten flexes (0.7 per week) at 14.5 points per flex.
WR -- $102 spent on 8 players, 16.2 points per start, plus seven flexes (0.5 per week) at 14.1 points per flex.
TE -- $31 spent on 4 players, 19.1 points per start, plus eleven flexes (0.8 per week) at 15.5 points per flex.

QB -- $36 spent, 29.5 ppg
PK -- $13 spent, 14.8 ppg
Def -- $11 spent, 10.3 ppg

Value picks (3+ points per dollar):
21.3 -- Kyren Williams
12.3 -- Zach Moss (though none since Week 8)
12.2 -- Raheem Mostert
9.9 -- Sam LaPorta
8.1 -- Jake Ferguson
7.0 -- Brock Purdy
6.2 -- Jordan Love
6.1 -- Alvin Kamara
5.1 -- Jayden Reed
4.4 -- Dalton Kincaid

Workhorses (40+ points added):
121.9 -- Raheem Mostert
90.9 -- Alvin Kamara
88.7 -- Sam LaPorta
85.1 -- Kyren Williams
84.3 -- Brock Purdy
70.7 -- Chris Olave
55.8 -- Jordan Love
50.0 -- Cowboys Defense
48.7 -- Jake Ferguson
43.9 -- Dalton Kincaid
43.9 -- Tyler Lockett

Guardian Angels (times they saved me from the Cut Lion):
2 -- Wil Lutz (for $4)
1 -- Dalton Kincaid (for $10)
1 -- Alvin Kamara (for $15)

Taking up Space (<1 point per dollar):
$15 -- Anthony Richardson
$11 -- Rashod Bateman
$11 -- Elijah Moore
$8 -- Marvin Mims
$5 -- Justyn Ross
$4 -- Matt Breida

Since only two of last week's "superfluous picks" scored for me in Week 14 (Zuerlein and Denver, neither of which were dispositive), the final analysis remains the same. I could have unchecked the boxes for all of the above players, plus James Conner ($20), Jordan Love ($9), Luke Musgrave ($6), Greg Zuerlein ($4), and Denver ($4) and the remaining 15 players (totaling $153) would have still carried me all the way to the finals.

Well I made the finals for what I believe is only the 2nd time in 20+ years of playing this contest. Unfortunately I only have one healthy QB and it's Derek Carr.

But I'm thrilled my rooster was able to evade the cut lion all season. Good luck to all who made it to the finals, hope a thread regular takes it down.

I’m with you. It’s about time we had a winner come from here. How many of us are left?

Not sure what's going on but the stats still are not updated for week 14. Normally you can use the "analyzer" and see how many teams of each roster size were eliminated each week.

I am always keeping the stats and I can't complete this season unless the stats get updated for week 14

?? @Joe Bryant ?? Do you know if the stats are going to be updated? Thanks!

Well, Mattison being ruled out helps you a little!

I'm still here, actually in 1st place right now after the Thursday night game. Big thanks to the Oakland defense and Josh Palmer. I don't expect to win it, but of course like my start. CosmoKramer is the name.... good luck to all that's left...

My stretch goal is a top 50 finish. I know I don’t have the team to finish top 7 because I have 6 of the top 7 most common players and no studs to really separate me.

Off to a good start

Goff - 43.9
Mixon - 13.6
Moss - 10.8
Sutton - 12.1.
Laporta - 31.1

Goff and Laporta are widely owned so there will be a lot of big scores.

I road common players to a 6th finish years ago. All it takes is a defensive performance like Oakland to move you up the ranks

Of course my key players are all going off after missing the final cut week by .2

even McKinnon is doing something what is happening lol

A ton of players I don't have put up a ton of points this weekend. I imagine I'm completely out of the running for a cash prize at this point, if I wasn't already completely covered to begin the playoffs. GL all.

After losing Graham Gano this season leaving me with one kicker, I am definitely going back to 3 kickers next season.

But it got me thinking about defenses - where does everyone stand - 2 or 3? I went with 2 this year (Carolina and Detroit) and now I am thinking 3 might be the sweet spot.

Oh and at 158 and change with Gainwell needing to score quite a bit to count. After losing Justin Herbert, Christian Watson, and Keenan Allen heading into the playoffs my goal changed to not finishing in last amongst the finalists. Good start for that I would think!

Just trying to take notes and keep them where I will find them regarding lineup thoughts for next year.

Well, happy to be in the finals but there won't be a second place finish in it for me this year. Mired in the bottom 10 with only Walker -9 tonight. At least I don't have to pay too much attention over the next couple weeks.

Scored 182.3 and in 37th place before the Monday night game. Likely to fall a few more places.

My WRs kept me from hitting the 200’s as they produced no flexes and a 12.2 and 7.7 had to count.

Do we have any posters in contention?

I got put out of my misery a few weeks ago. My combo of Herbert & Howell started out so well, but then went to pieces. Tyreek held my WR's together, but they ultimately crapped the bed. I hit on the RB's though (Mixon, Javonte, Cook, Kamara, Zeke).

@TheWinz has some good data in the thread. I think 3 Ks cheap is way to go (and think winz data backs it up). I have gone with 2 cheap defenses last two years but haven’t seen much data on that one (or missed it if someone posted). bur check out some of the winz previous posts in this thread on kickers…

Anyone want to share lessons learned for next year? Here are a few of mine:

- Do not tinker with my roster if Joe offers an extra prize again. It's been brutal keeping track of a sub-contest that I ain't even in!
- Continue rostering 3 cheapie K's & D's. For $18, I've averaged 23.1 pts per week, even if my D choices kinda sucked.
- Do a better job finding the low cost value players. This year I give myself a C- grade. A few gems, but mostly trash.
Bumping for poster asking about K and D.

I have excel spreadsheets going back 5 contest years for kickers (2019 thru 2023) and my defense spreadsheets go back 14 years (2010 thru 2023). Sadly, I lost the old kicker ones when I had a laptop crash.

Anyway, as far as kicker goes, the data says to go with multiple cheap kickers, and it's not even close. Justin Tucker may be the best kicker ever, but even if he finishes K1 in this contest, he's not worth 2 kickers (that keep their jobs). The secret to kickers IMO is to find the cheap ones with the best job security, and there are always at least 3 I've felt comfortable with. Don't try to get sneaky and take a risky guy just because he's on a good offense. This year's cheapest kickers were:
Badgley - How in the heck he was the 6th most common kicker is a mystery. He sucks and gets cut every year. Badgley is last year's Blankenship.
Carlson - I considered him safe and chose him. He's actually been bad and is one of only 3 K's with 3 missed EP's. But he still has a job.
Fairbairn - Sure, he got hurt, but his job was never in doubt. I think he would've been more common, but people shied away from Stroud too.
Fry - Wasn't even on a team when the contest closed, so it was easy to pass on him. The masses agreed, and he was on only 11 rosters.
Gould - Wasn't even on a team when the contest closed, so it was easy to pass on him. The masses agreed, and he was on only 22 rosters.
Hopkins - He went to CLE well before the contest deadline, and the masses correctly swarmed to him (me included). He's been the best K deal thus far.
Maher - Lost his job to Lutz shortly before the deadline, but landed with LAR. Lasted 7 games and was cut due to suckage.
Santos - Like Fairbairn, he has been with his team for years and is ultra-safe. I think he is currently K9, but I'll have to check that (chose him as well).
Shudak - Wasn't even on a team when the contest closed, so it was easy to pass on him. The masses agreed, and he was on only 5 rosters.
So, how hard would it have been to avoid Badgley, Fry, Gould, Maher, and Shudak, and choose from the other 4? Pretty simple if you ask me. As for how many K's to roster, I think 3 is the way to go. But if you wanted to play risky and choose 2, I think that's fine also. Kickers rarely miss games due to injury.

When it comes to defenses, the data says to avoid any single D that costs as much as 2 cheap ones. I have always rostered either 2 or 3 cheap ones, but a case can be made for rostering the mid-priced ones, as long as you can't get a 2-for-1 deal. For example, 2 D's for $4 each or a $5 and $3 combo is fine, because you could not have purchased 3 cheapies for that price. FWIW, there were 5 D's for $7 this year, and PHI was the most common (2nd most common D in this contest, with 1503 unhappy owners). They are currently D22. And of the 70 different combos you could've made for that $7, every one of them would be outscoring the Eagles. Still, if I had to choose a top priced K or a top priced D, I'd do my research and go for the D.

Scored 182.3 and in 37th place before the Monday night game. Likely to fall a few more places.

My WRs kept me from hitting the 200’s as they produced no flexes and a 12.2 and 7.7 had to count.

Do we have any posters in contention?
I’m at 19, so I can still see the top.

#8 right now, CosmoKramer, need to keep hitting like last week... I doubt it happens but like my spot, 10 pts behind leader.

If I hadn't been booted in week 12, I would be in 175th place out of 182 teams. Less than 20 points combined from my QB and both WR's, yuck!

a couple of my RBs that I could count on recently put up duds (Kamara and Mixon). A couple of my duds throughout the year put up good scores (Pickens and J Johnson). It all will equate to a middle of the pack score I bet. Miss being ruled out along with Kamara and Mixon’s duds have me desperately think at RB. Can we get a Herbert game?

Top of the standings after Thursday night game. :coffee:
Top of the standings after Saturday games. Dicker the kicker with 22 helps the cause.... CosmoKramer.... giddy up...:deadhorse:
You’re in the driver’s seat. A big McCaffrey game could give you a big cushion going into the final week.
Yeah, definitely in the place I want to be at this point. I have CMC, Hyatt and Waller on Monday to replace a -9.9 flex. CMC -16.4, Hyatt -11.8 and Waller -16.8. Been saying I don't expect to be in the money for this thing so I will stick with it. The ride to this point has been fun whatever happens.
