It will be interesting to see how close we got here. We did have to make a couple of pivots to guys we thought would be a spot or two lower in ownership to make the byes work.

Kind of ironic that the team with the most players is the only one with 3 QB, but most would agree that 3 QB is a bit of a waste. It will be imteresting to see which team does better

Looking pretty good. Walker over Archane was the right call. I think we swept the TEs. QBs looking really good too.

Each week after cutoff I will post an UNOFFICIAL cut after each week (barring future ties), if there are ties it will slightly affect the future cut lines but I will show that as well:

Start 11695 (NOTE – this is based on standings page which I assume has no staff entries which are exempt from prizes)
10% Week 1 Cut to Number – 10526
10% Week 2 cut to Number – 9474
10% Week 3 cut to Number – 8527
20% Week 4 cut to Number – 6822
20% Week 5 cut to Number – 5458
20% Week 6 cut to Number – 4367
20% Week 7 cut to Number – 3494
30% Week 8 cut to Number – 2446
30% Week 9 cut to Number – 1713
30% Week 10 cut to Number – 1200
30% Week 11 cut to Number – 840
30% Week 12 cut to Number – 588
40% Week 13 cut to Number – 353
40% Week 14 cut to Number – 212 (means the top 13 non-playoff teams this week win a prize)

Notes From Contest Rules:

- In weeks 1--14, the cut is based on scores from the current week only. Scores reset each week.

- Specifically, the cut will be determined as in the following example. Suppose it is week 7 and there are 2,394 entries at the beginning of the week. Because the cut percentage is 20% for that week, 2394 will be multiplied by 0.80 and the resulting number, if not an integer, will be rounded UP to the next greatest integer. In this case, 2394 * 0.8 = 1915.2. We round up to 1916. The entry with the 1916th-highest score, and all entries with an equal or greater score, will move to the next round.

- if fewer than 225 participants remain after week 14, then prizes will be awarded to eliminated participants according to highest score in week 14. If prizes are still unawarded after that, then highest score in week 13, and so on.

29 player roster, a lot like what I usually do (my past avg: 28.9 players) with some differences.

QB: 2 for $43 (my past avg: 2.9 for $27)
With every starting QB priced high, I knew I was only getting 2 of them. I have never spent close to this much at QB before and it was probably a mistake. I do like this duo - I see that it's the same as what the 18-20 player roster picked - and I stacked them each with a young value WR. Was considering Mahomes-Darnold but they share a bye.

RB: 8 for $46 (my past avg: 4.8 for $77)
A larger and cheaper RB corps than I've ever done before, taking advantage of cheap backups including the return of $2 options. 5 players for $12; probably at least one of them will produce like we're expecting the $12ish RBs to over the second half of the season. These are the kinds of contingent upside backs that zero RB drafters love. I skipped out on the 3 elite studs (who each cost $33+) in favor of a much cheaper potential stud in Achane; in previous years I would've tried to find a way to pay up for one of the best (probably $37 CMC). Also got the obvious $8 value play in Dowdle.

WR: 8 for $101 (my past avg: 9.3 for $83)
I usually love collecting cheap WR contributors, but pickings were slim this year. I got 3 of the $5 and under guys (Tucker, Dortch, Iosivas); maybe could've added someone like $4 Van Jefferson. The elite WRs all cost $32+; I paid up for the best, $38 Lamb. I usually mostly skip the middle price range, but this year I have 3 young guys in the $10-$20 range. 2 are stacked (Rice & Odunze), 2 are in the mix with the guys behind that elite tier (Nabers & Rice), and 2 are rookies who were top 10 NFL picks (Nabers & Odunze). Also got Polk as my 3rd rookie WR.

TE: 4 for $39 (my past avg: 4 for $43)
There is no superelite TE at the top this year - it's a flatter, larger tier of high-end TEs. I got 2 of the cheaper guys near the top who are in contention to have big seasons or at least occasional huge games. Cheap TE values were better than cheap WR values and I got 2 of them. $8 Taysom Hill and $3 Gerald Everett were close to making my roster.

PK: 3 for $9 (my past avg: 3.7 for $9)
Got 3 of the cheapest, with relatively safe holds on the starting job, though there's some risk with the rookies.

DEF: 4 for $12 (my past avg: 4.2 for $11)
Lots of cheap guys who can have spike weeks. Week 15-17 opponents include NE (2x), NO (2x), CAR, DEN, TB, MIN, SEA.

Overall I threw more numbers at RB, and more money at QB & WR. I got more potential studs at reasonable prices ($13-$21) and fewer clear studs. I used more cheap roster slots on contingent upside guys who could do nothing or could hit big, and fewer on contributors who are relatively safe bets to at least see the field reliably. I am wishing I had made this roster a little more like my typical roster in some ways; I wish I'd managed to include 1 more clear stud (at a flex-able spot) and 30 total players with at least 1 more cheap contributor (at a flex-able spot), probably by spending less at QB.

Edited to add ownership%. Average is 11.9%, which is slightly lower than I usually have. 6.4% of teams have the Williams+Odunze stack which is high enough to make me think I should've gone another direction with my stack. 2.7% have the Mahomes+Rice stack - Rice might be the most rostered player in the contest, but most people sensibly avoided the expensive Mahomes.

Thanx to all that joined in to make these entries happen. Best of luck to everyone in the contest.
Kind of ironic that the team with the most players is the only one with 3 QB, but most would agree that 3 QB is a bit of a waste. It will be imteresting to see which team does better
I was part of the 21-23 Roster group and given roster constraints it seemed best to swing from the hip and save a roster spot here, same with Defenses. It was tough to get into a set roster given constraints!

I don't know why I obsess over this thing year after year. I always come in with a plan on paper and then the moment I enter my lineup, I completely throw it out the window. It doesn't matter because I don't think I have ever made it past Week 5 or 6. But here it goes:

QB - Kirk Cousins - ATL/12 - $15
QB - Matthew Stafford - LAR/6 - $13
QB - Deshaun Watson - CLE/10 - $12
RB - De'Von Achane - MIA/6 - $21

TE - Taysom Hill - NO/12 - $8
PK - Younghoe Koo - ATL/12 - $6
PK - Ka'imi Fairbairn - HOU/14 - $6
TD - Detroit Lions - DET/5 - $4
TD - Las Vegas Raiders - LV/10 - $3

Total value: 250
Two tips to make it past week 6.

1. Don't waste money on a 3rd QB. Have some conviction in your first two. If you need the third, you wasted money on one of the other two.

2. TE is the best value position, why are you spending all your money on RB. Along those lines, your flexes should be coming from WR and TE unless it's cheap flyer RBs. Furthermore, you will be losing ground to the field at TE while leaving viable scores on the bench at RB/WR.
1. The math nerd in me wants to disagree on this point, but it's hard to argue against historical results.

2. Value is value. I don't make any assumptions about setting priorities inside the flex pool. Staff has gotten very good at setting prices for the top X players at each position and I'm not sure the top 10 TEs will do so well hitting value this year. The WR position is DEEEEEEP. In theory, the dropoff in the TE position is more steep than in the RB position which tends to support the notion of "over-investing" at TE, but when you consider projection uncertainty and injury risk, it might be a lot safer for the overall portfolio to concentrate on "over-spending" at the position where the 10th highest scorer is a lot closer to the highest scorer....which all goes back to that philosophy question of are you building a roster to make the finals or to win it all, I suppose.

Hey Subscriber Contest Stat Geeks…. :)

What’s the furtherest a team with 1 QB has ever made it.
Heck, have they ever made it past their 1 QB’s bye week?

These 1QB rosters a coocoo to me :)

I want to say that a 1 QB team won the entire contest with only Drew Brees like 15 years ago, but I may be misremembering and I no longer have all that data.

11,723 entries!!!!!
How does that compare to last year?

Joe made a comment about a low number of entries and I believe you mentioned that it was the same last year. Just curious how many entries compared to last year

We were well behind last year's pace a week or so ago when I posted about this. Folks came surging it at the end and we finished strong. Should be a fun year.

I'm afraid I won't be long for the Contest this year, but I'll ride along with the Thread regulars for a while. Very disappointed with this Season's effort. Credit to the staff who priced out the Players. Very sharp. Almost annoyingly so.

My trip out of the country from 08/21-08/31 really constricted my available time when I got back. Had to cram a lot of National High-Stakes Drafts into the past week, and kinda had to put this on the back-burner, as it's such a rabbit hole of invested time, once I start diving in. The hours just seem to fly off the clock.

Finally set aside some time yesterday afternoon, but had a hard deadline with National High Stakes Contest waivers that I had to knock out before my final Draft of the Season last night at 10:30PM, which ended right around the Contest submission deadline. Scrapped the whole thing of course, multiple times, as usual.

I've constructed an entry for this Contest almost every year that it's been in existence, so I know all the usual, customary guidelines that wise and experienced Contest Entrants follow, but there were a couple things I wanted to try that compromised some things, then I ran out of time, and this Entry suffered for it.

I really wanted this particular D/ST threesome, and that cost me $5, rather than going the '3 for $3' route. I also really fell in love with a Moody/Sanders/Zeurlein kicker trio, and after cutting Greg the Leg to try something else, I had to attend to all those waivers and my late Draft, and wound up with Perine instead of Justice Hill/Colby Parkinson/Jake Bates. So only 2 PK, and definitely too much $ invested in PK & D/ST with only 5 combined to show for it. Not good.

Went with 2 QB after trying to go against the standard practice and finding room for a Goff/Stafford/Levis trio. I don't think my Goff/Geno is ideal 2-man show.

Tried really hard to put a Josh Jacobs/James Cook/Joe Mixon trinity anchoring my RB room, but that fell apart at the last minute as I was trying to find a middle ground with a Gibbs/Monty, Mostert/Wright, Javonte/Jaleel group, and as my deadline approached I hastily put together pieces of that, and just jammed the last $6 on the table into Perine. Again, if I'd given myself more time, I'd have converted that into JHill/Parkinson/Bates. If nothing else knocks me out, my RB Bye weeks should do the trick.

I was really committed to Waddle/DvSmith/Nabors/Cooks, but struggled to find the resources to build anything around them, outside of the cheapest Packer WR. 5 WR is no way to win this Contest, son.

Kincaid/Ferguson/THill/Parkinson was my ideal TE squad, but again, too much fiddling with time running out. Left Parkinson off. Was very headstrong about having Taysom Hill on the Rooster, probably to my detriment.

I suppose there's a narrow path. Goff/Jacobs/Mixon/Waddle/DvSmith/Nabors/Kincaid/Ferguson with some Geno/McLaughlin/BCooks/Taysom help...that could run the gauntlet, I guess, but probably not.

I've run a few pretty successful 20-man iterations over the years, but they've all been stronger than this squad. If you're gonna go 20 or less, it's gotta be THICK. I'd feel a lot better with 22 dudes, swapping out Perine for Justice/Parkinson/Bates. Just didn't switch it before I had to walk away. The 10:30pm Draft ended just a little late to go back and have one more look/edit.

Good luck to all!

Maybe not outliers but Irving, Vidal and Tucker are probably safe from making most common picks list. This from a slacker who represents contestants who don't really know ball like some of y'all. :D

Went with 2 QB after trying to go against the standard practice and finding room for a Goff/Stafford/Levis trio. I don't think my Goff/Geno is ideal 2-man show.
I had Goff/Stafford/Nix for most of the period from launch to deadline, and settled on Daniels/Stafford/Levis based on FBG staffers projections...which I probably pay too much attention to.

I'm curious to see whether 3QBs is a higher or lower percentage of entries this year, or unchanged. Most entrants are aware of the "don't draft 3 qbs!" paradigm but I don't have a sense for compliance with that "rule".

Thanx to all that joined in to make these entries happen. Best of luck to everyone in the contest.
That 24-27 player team looks strong..my Vegas money would be that it goes further than the other group entries
Observations....

All the entries are reasonable / I won't be bashing any of them.

18-20 roster (I was part of this group)

- only spent $64 at RB vs $90 at WR ($42 at qb, $37 at TE).
- ignoring pure depth spots (rb4, wr5, te3, etc.), Carnell Williams, Nabers, Coleman and Bowers are unproven.

21-23 roster

- rb2-rb5 "unconventional?" (White, Hubbard, Algeier, Dowdle)
- Nico Collins pick is brave with Diggs, Dell, Schultz, year 2 regression?

24-27 roster

- ignoring pure depth spots (rb4, wr5, te3, etc.), Achane/Brown/Dowdle and Nabers/Odunze are brave.
- this team could finish 1st or 4th in the roster size contest

28-30 roster

- other than Metcalf, no skill players above $17...(I know...large roster....but still)
- personal prefs only, I'm not thrilled by Brown/Ford/Lloyd/Wright

Based on personal bias / pride of ownership, I'll guess...(no; I'm not taking any action on these picks)

1. 18-20 roster
2. 24-27 roster
3. 28-30 roster
4. 21-23 roster

Honest criticism and feedback welcome, especially about allotment of dollars per position.
QB - I would love to be able to spend only $25 at QB, but I honestly couldn't find a duo I liked. And Watson scares me. The reason Jameis Winston is a contest choice for $7 isn't because he is a decent backup QB; it's because a few folks in high places thought just maybe Watson wouldn't be playing an entire season.

RB - You went pretty light, but RB's typically are the worst positional value, dollar for dollar. I think you'll be fine, but as the season progresses, I think you'll be hoping for injury to multiple starters. Week 12 could be rough, if Chubb comes back.

WR - Strong! That's all I have to say about this group.

TE - Week 12 is a weak point for you, both at RB, and now TE. That's pretty late to be spending $57 in RB's and TE's.

K & D - Just grab a few cheapies that you like, and you did just that.

Sorry I didn't see your post until now, and we're beyond the entry deadline, but I concur with virtually everything @TheWinz said above.

In this contest over many years, the highest survival rates are always owned by teams with longer rosters. Last year I believe the sweet spot was 27 players. This year will likely be no exception, and your roster conforms well to that strategy. Good luck!

The final 24 hours had so much tweaking! I was considering Goff as my lone QB, but chickened out. Also got away from the CMC/Lamb duo I had in a lot of iterations.

QB Jared Goff - $18
QB Matthew Stafford - $13

This contest really rewards passing QBs, and I biased towards early bye weeks across the board.

RB Bijan Robinson - $33
RB Kenneth Walker III - $20
RB Javonte Williams - $14
RB Gus Edwards - $14
RB Blake Corum - $11
RB Trey Sermon - $3

Most of my earlier iterations only had 3 "starters", and I wanted to get up to 4, in case an injury struck before one of the backups I was considering rostering moved into a starting role, so I added Gus Edwards at the expense of some high-upside backups like Ray Davis or Bucky Irving. I think Bijan and KW3 could both finish top 5 at the position this year.

WR Malik Nabers - $19
WR Rashee Rice - $13
WR Courtland Sutton - $13
WR Rome Odunze - $11
WR Khalil Shakir - $10

Not thrilled about relying so heavily on rookies here, but I'm buying in on the preseason hype for Nabers and Odunze, hoping for lots of volume. I think Sutton should be a target hog as well, and Khalil has the familiarity with Josh Allen that will hopefully translate to some big weeks. Not much to say about Rice that hasn't already been said.

TE Evan Engram - $20
TE George Kittle - $15
TE Taysom Hill - $8
TE Colby Parkinson - $3

I think TE has a lot of value in this format, both from a cost standpoint and the 1.5 PPR. I think Engram could be the top scoring TE in this contest, with all the targets that Calvin Ridley leaves behind. Kittle is more boom or bust, which is totally fine for best ball, same with Hill. And the Rams gave Parkinson a big contract, so with Higbee hurt, he should be heavily utilized. I expect this bunch to provide the majority of my flex scores.

PK Will Reichard - $3
PK Jake Bates - $3

Cheap kickers, with early byes.

TD Atlanta Falcons - $3
TD Los Angeles Chargers - $3

Granted I'm a Falcons fan, but they play in the weakest division, easiest schedule, and had some big defensive signings, I think they'll overperform their cost.

This is my third year, and I've been eliminated in Week 10 both previous seasons. Here's hoping I see week 11!!!

For what it's worth, interest in the contest has been abysmal this year. We normally have 10,000-12,000 entrants.

Had less than 5,000 this morning. That's terrible to be giving away this much money and have such little interest.

I know this group is super into it. But overall, it's been terrible.

Doesn't change anything for this year but wow.
I don't want to criticize your business model Joe, as you've probably forgotten more about this biz than I know currently, but I can tell you anecdotally that when you guys made the switch to tiered pricing, where base-level subscibers don't have access to "elite" content, I was so disappointed that I vowed not to subscribe at all - and the ONLY thing that brought me back to the fold was this awesome contest. I suspect the subsciber contest isn't the real problem but what do I know. I spend most of my time on these boards and messing around with the contest, and I also check the rankings regularly and read any article that catches my attention, but it is a bummer when I can only read the beginning of an article.

All feedback is always welcome. No worries there.

There will always be folks that don't want to pay the price we charge for content. That's been a challenge from day 1 and I totally understand there. We're not for everyone.

We think we're by far an incredible value for what we offer and charge at all 3 tiers. But again, we're not for everyone.

What bums me though is the low participation in the contest. We have more premium subscribers than ever. This is another record year. So there are more people eligible with an entry into the contest than ever. But fewer than ever taking advantage of it.

Really odd.

Again, I know it's not this group as I know y'all love it.

Maybe I'm the exception but I'm not surprised that apparently the majority of people who subscribe to FBGuys and play in the big money game ($350 per team) are not interested in the subscriber contest (as evidenced by @Joe Bryant statement that it's a record year for premium subscriptions yet subscriber contest participation is abysmal).
But side note: There ended up being 11,695 Subscriber Contest entries this year (not counting staff) after all was said and done. So it looks like that is right in the ballpark with previous years.

I've only played in the big money game one year (and that entry was part of my prize for placing 4th in the subscriber contest in 2011, so I didn't have to ante up $350). I personally will not pay $350 for a team entry because I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable about NFL players as the guys who always pay to play in the big money games, and I would be at a severe disadvantage to those guys. And unlike those guys, I certainly am NOT in it for the money, or a chance of winning any, as microscopic as my chance would be.

BUT.. for those who are into it to that degree, or in it for the money, I'm not surprised that a $5,000 Subscriber Contest grand prize is apparently not appealing to them. When you compare that prize to the HUGE payout for winning in the big money game, there is literally no contest. I know some people plop down $1,000 for 3 teams in the big money game, and I am not surprised that those same people are not willing to spend the amount of time required, and expend the amount of energy needed to shift to a "best ball" strategy in hopes of winning a $5,000 prize, when the prize in the big money game is what? $250K or something? I haven't even checked this year.

So my observation whether right or wrong, is that most people who play what I call the "big money" game, are probably in it for chance of winning BIG MONEY. And I'd be willing to bet that the majority of those who religiously play in the subscriber contest every year, are likely in it for the challenge, and not for the money.

Speaking only for myself, I play the Subscriber Contest every year for the challenge, NOT for any chance to win anything. So the prize money amount is irrelevant to me and has zero to do with my participation in the contest. I'd probably still play every year even if the prize was less (Shhhhh... don't tell Joe.)

As for me personally, I'd rather plop down $350 for a good bottle of wine and dinner with my wife at the Capital Grille, than spend it on a microscopic chance to win a fantasy football contest.

Another draw to the Subscriber Contest for me at least, is the comradery of all the other participants. While I have never actually met any of the others, I feel like @TheWinz, and many others here are my friends, and I look forward to hearing their take on the stuff we post about in the forum. What we all have in common is the love of football, and an appreciation for a site like FootballGuys.com where we can all share in discussion about it. The Subscriber Contest is icing on my cake. I love it and I look forward to it every year, and I'll be crushed if it ever goes away. I go through withdrawal every year at contest end, and suffer through months of NHL hockey and MLB until the contest gets fired up again the following year. And we are finally there!! Santa Claus comes tonight: KC vs Baltimore.

As added context for Joe, I have always been a PRO subscriber. But this year after only being able to read the beginning of a couple articles, I upgraded to ELITE to eliminate that aggravation.

Bottom line: I think participation in the Subscriber Contest all boils down to common sense economics. I'm not sure we should be really be surprised that more people do not enter. And in defense of keeping the contest.... with 11,695 entries, I believe only $3 per subscription likely covers the cost of the contest prize pool.

Oh, and I happen to have a degree in Economics. So hopefully that lends at least a shred of credibility to my opinion.

👊

This same sentiment is what drew 12 of us to forming a $50 FBG Home League, and next year I expect we’ll be able to get to 3 leagues if we rally the troops sooner. Playing against people “you know” really ups the enjoyment for all of us.

Here’s to a great year and I hope a board regular wins this contest!

Signed,
Board Regular

And in defense of keeping the contest.... with 11,695 entries, I believe only $2 per subscription likely covers the cost of the contest prize pool.

I think peak interest in something like the Subscriber Contest was probably a decade ago. Once DFS became mainstream there were way more compelling options, and now with legal sports betting there are even more. It's a free contest so no one's complaining, but the reality is the price of a FBG subscription has gone up probably 3-4x in the last 20 years and the grand prize is actually less now than it was back then. And I imagine the cognitive load of putting together an 18+ player salary cap roster that has to last all season for a tiny shot at a prize isn't worth the effort for most folks. You can hop on DraftKings right now and build a lineup in seconds that will give you a shot at winning $1M tonight.

Like a lot of folks here, I do it mainly for the challenge, and the discussion, and nostalgia. At this point it's been 20 years, it's an annual tradition for me. But if some other site launched a similar free contest I doubt I'd waste the time to enter. I just don't think it's that compelling for most folks.

One suggestion I sent to Joe was to put the “Set It and Forget It” line near the very top of the emails/reminders/etc.

I imagine for some subset of subscribers that they feel like “ugh. Another league to join that I have to manage all year? I’m too busy for that”. But this format is fantastic for those with limited free time or attention. Just set it and forget it.

@TheWinz

This year we have 11,695 entries, not counting staff entries or the 5 special rosters.

Last year we had only 9,966, not counting staff entries. So the numbers this year came up a lot in the last few days. I think the most we ever had as long as I've played, was around 15,000. Here's what I dug out of my archives....

In 2022, we had 12,254 entries, not counting staff.

In 2021, we had 9,759 entries, not counting staff.

In 2020, we had 10,226, not counting staff.

In 2019, we had 12,583, not counting staff.

In 2018, we had 15,080, not counting staff.

In 2017, we had 13,484, not counting staff.

In 2016, we had 14,870 not counting staff.

In 2015. we had 13,635, not counting staff

In 2014, we had 14,270, not counting staff.

In 2013, we had 14,393 not counting staff.

In 2012. we had 13,293, not counting staff.

But my point on the subscriber contest is that it's not about the prizes, like it probably is for contests with a $350 entry fee per team.

16.2% average ownership. Probably could've done better than many of those sub-10% guys.

18.7% RB De'Von Achane MIA $21
16.3% QB Caleb Williams CHI $16
