2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (2 Viewers)

on non-American forums do the fans spend as much time discussing the low scoring and rules changes?

or are we just too used to Big XII football games ending 83-70 and expect that from all sports?

I am on an English board pretty regularly - they ***** and moan about the style of football that England are playing (lots of sideways and backwards passing).

They pretty universally hate VAR (or at least the Premier League implementation).

They hate close off-side calls.

But, there are not a ton of calls to overhaul the rules to introduce more scoring. They would be generally happy with a free-flowing game with no goals - but they hate the kind of style that slows the ball down, and keeps teams from creating chances.

Almost every idea expressed here has been talked about to death on non American based forums.

They tend to bubble up every major tournament and die down again until FIFA mention a trial they are pursuing.

Ideas like the offside rule change are being championed by Arsene Wenger, the long time French Arsenal coach in the EPL.

I don't think soccer fans want anything that feels artificial just to increase scoring.

Almost every fan from every corner of the earth would be happy if the sport had more scoring chances (not goals per say but chances). No one can really agree on how to do it with out rule changes that some would hate.

The sport is thriving world wide so FIFA has no real impetuous to make any sort of change.

I used to make fun of soccer for the low scoring. Then I actually watched games and saw how tense even a 0-0 game can be.

I think there are things that can be done to make the game better, but ridiculous things like wider goals to increase scoring is not one of them. Scoring is fine.

I like that goals are rare. Makes them that more special when they happen.

Felix Zwayer will be reffing the England Netherlands game.

Zwayer, in his past, has been suspended for taking bribes to fix matches. You would think this would be one of those "one strike and you are done" offenses for refs where they are then banned from reffing a pro game ever again.
Yeah I just came in here to ask about this.

From a casual fan's perspective of this sport I can only ask... "wat?"

If you are UEFA, and you don't want an England v. France final - you call in a fixer...

Yeah... that's still a horrible explanation.

There is no real explanation.

Soccer is the most corrupt sport on the planet. You take the worst of boxing, add it to the worst of the NCAA, add in some WWE-like ridiculousness and multiply ten fold, and that is soccer.

It is so ingrained at the highest levels of the sport, that sadly those in power just shrug, knowing that if they only give a slap on the wrist, some day when it is their turn, they hope some one will go lightly on them.

CONMEBOL, UEFA, FIFA, CONCACAF for decades have been filled with con men and corruption. And don't even get started on the chaos all over Africa. Leagues have it much less so but match fixing seems to come up at some point during the year some where in the world. The sport is basically too big to avoid corruption.

The sport is incredibly popular in spite of the people who run it, never because of them...

Can be I agree. I still think these tournaments have had very little attacking. Shots are fun. Saves are fun. Chances are fun. Games that are high in those things but low in goals are fun. You wont turn on any club match in the top 5 leagues and watch both teams bunker at the same time like this.

🚨
𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚: UEFA are now reviewing the decision to appoint Felix Zwayer as referee for the England-Netherlands match, amid concerns within the governing body.Zwayer has previously been banned from football for accepting a €300 bribe to match-fix in 2005.

Need a separate line for "OWN GOAL"

I think this tells a pretty good story about where the team really is right now. You don't have to agree with each of these, but if you compared 1-20 for the top teams you'd see much higher ratings at Whoscored.com. It suggests we have 7-8 legit starters (if you give a one or two of the lower comp folks the benefit of the doubt).

At a glance, I think a team with the bottom half of the team being this good this would be a team fighting relegation in the EPL (but I didn't actually compare).

Pulisic - 7.16
Cardoso - 7.06
Antonee - 6.92
McKennie - 6.78
Adams - 6.73 (2023)
Richards - 6.72

Balogun - 6.56
Turner - 6.47
Ream - 6.43
Scally - 6.43
Aaronson - 6.40
Musah - 6.38
Reyna - 6.35 (limited)
LDLT - 6.32
Weah - 6.31

Dest - 7.41*
Tillman - 7.41*
Carter-Vickers - 7.13*
Sargent - 7.01*
Pepi - 6.43*

*lower level of competition

Genuinely curious, what would your suggestions be?

Well, making offside feet-only would be a great place to start. I think the whole body is just too much of an advantage though -- that's like five feet.

Also, make any tactical foul an automatic yellow. Over and over we see guys get beat and they just rugby tackle the offensive player. Open the game up like the NBA and Hockey have done to great effect. They've done a lot here already, but definitely could do more.

Maybe some sort of group-stage half-point bonus for 2 or 3 goals scored in a game. Make a 2-2 draw worth more than 0-0. Stuff like that.

I spent all of 30 seconds thinking about it, so these may be terrible ideas.
This.

The whole idea is that it's a "tactical foul" means it's intentionally a foul to stop a goal scoring opportunity. That shouldn't be allowed. Giving a free kick for that usually is the same as no punishment. Same goes for ANY obvious delay. Standing in front of a free kick, tossing a ball away on a throw in, keeper holding it longer than 10 seconds (yes, make it a little longer but then actually enforce it), running with the keeper to prevent a kick or throw, etc -- yellow card for all of them.

Get rid of the garbage and it'll clean the game up and make it so much more enjoyable to watch AND increase scoring.

I so thoroughly agree on this, and it's mind bottling to me that this hasn't already been done.

Imagine in the NFL if a team was running the hurry-up and after the play a guy on the other team just punted the ball into the stands and the clock kept running, and this was totally accepted and normal.

It would be so easy to get rid of the **** housery by just penalizing the **** housery, but they have no interest.

And yes, anything where you're clearly not making a "soccer play" (IE you just wrap up a guy who's spinning away past you) should be an auto-yellow.

Am I missing something in this discussion? Most "tactical fouls" that stop a counter or possible goal scoring are carded. And most of the time people like JP and Landon incorrectly use the term "tactical fouls" to make themselves seems smarter and portray the offender as "knowing what he is doing". A blatant foul deep in the other team's half really isn't a tactical one. I don't care if this is booked or not. In most cases.

And a "tactical foul" IMO is different than time wasting imo. And I agree they need to card these more, which will help with the in game action that are discussed ad-nauseum.

They've barely called most of what you call tactical fouls as fouls, let alone carded them. It's been consistently terrible.

Feels like whoever wins today will play England in the final. People will moan about how boring England has played but yet they would be in another final. I'll be rooting for whoever wins tomorrow in the final but hoping England take it so people in this thread will lose their minds. ;)

We're staying at a hotel in the area this week because my wife has a conference/training, and it makes the logistics easier with getting my son around. We pull up to the hotel last night and notice a lot of police and security. Notice a lot of people lined up around the street and realize they all have Colombia gear. Turns out their team is staying at that hotel too. Later on I saw their busses go by while I was in the lobby but they used a side entrance.

Hoping no fire alarms get pulled.

"Standing in front of a free kick, tossing a ball away on a throw in, keeper holding it longer than 10 seconds (yes, make it a little longer but then actually enforce it), running with the keeper to prevent a kick or throw, etc -- yellow card for all of them."
They've barely called most of what you call tactical fouls as fouls, let alone carded them. It's been consistently terrible.
If you are talking Copa, then they have barely called any fouls. Except against Uruguay. Who seems to simply escape booking. :boxing:
Maybe that's what I missed in the discussion?
Euros and club seems to have this called constantly.

Feels like whoever wins today will play England in the final. People will moan about how boring England has played but yet they would be in another final. I'll be rooting for whoever wins tomorrow in the final but hoping England take it so people in this thread will lose their minds. ;)
I have nothing against any for the last 4 teams. Would like good games and can watch as a neutral.

Although after they got screwed in the WC, wouldn't mind Netherlands getting a shot at the title. Always had a soft spot for them.

Is this a typo, or is it actually a thing?

It's a FBG schtick like "pole". I was worried I might get made fun of if I used the proper term.

Yeah. You know when things are so crazy, you get your thoughts trapped, like in a bottle.

We're staying at a hotel in the area this week because my wife has a conference/training, and it makes the logistics easier with getting my son around. We pull up to the hotel last night and notice a lot of police and security. Notice a lot of people lined up around the street and realize they all have Colombia gear. Turns out they are staying at that hotel too. Later on I saw their busses go by while I was in the lobby but they used a side entrance.

Hoping no fire alarms get pulled.
Might be worth having a quick look see around the toilet stall in the lobby. Who knows what those Colombians left behind.

I think that one set a record for fouls and cards, including the infamous Nigel deJong flying chest-kick against Alonso which would have been a certain red on any other day.
I wasn't necessarily even pulling for Spain at the time, but I'm still mad about that. Not as mad as I am about Hugh Dallas not knowing what a hand ball was (22 years ago, you'd think I could let go), but close. Obscene. Thank god Spain won.
