2025 Year-end Song Draft - We've Started, join in and pick a song or twenty four (6 Viewers)

We focus a lot on new songs in thread, but I still like albums. Question for the masses as I listen to the playlist:

Do your picks represent favorite albums as well, or more just individual songs you like?
What are people's top 5-10 albums? (If you listen that way?)
I am much more a song/playlist listener at this point but my 7 albums would be

Headlights by Alex G

The Passionate Ones by Nourished by Time

Racing Mount Plesant

Hunting Season by Home is Where

NEVER ENOUGH by Turnstile

BeBi TiRAR MaS FOTos by Bad Bunny

LUX by ROSALIA
Going to listen to this Rosalia album this weekend.

I still can pick 5, so I am going to chill tonight and finish listening to a handful of albums I got from a podcast that don't have something added on the playlist yet.
It's the one I listen to the least but it's pretty undeniable.

ditkaburgers earned a few more points on Santa's nice list by sending Mrs. Eephus and I out tonight to see The Cure's new concert movie. I didn't even know it was a thing but it's apparently a limited theatrical engagement. It's also 2 hours 47 minutes so I may need to pack a spare edible.

The Cure movie was pretty good. They're not a particularly dynamic live act and their stage show is modest by modern standards but the film was visually interesting without the over-editing which often ruins full length concert movies. They started with their most recent album front to back followed by a generous helping of their best known songs. I'm glad we got to see it in the theater.

It’s playing by me on Sunday. What was the audience like? I’ve never been to a movie concert before.

Some people in the audience acted like they were at a show and applauded at the end of songs (I didn't because the band couldn't hear us). There was one woman(?) behind us with a weird munchkin/troll voice who sang along to "In Between Days". Fortunately she didn't seem to know the words to their other songs. My biggest gripe was I thought the volume should have been louder :headbang: .

I found 5 more easily after 1 night of listening to some new albums. Not that I needed proof, but more evidence that there is still plenty of good music out there, and the amount of "work" it takes is minimal to find ideas for new music. Besides this thread, I just listened to one podcast and looked at a couple lists on the albumoftheyear site. HAIM I already new, but the other artists were brand new to me, and all I liked enough to look into the artists more.

1.kp: HAIM - ALL OVER ME

2.kp: MCKINLEY DIXON - LISTEN GENTLE

13.kp: JETSTREAM PONY - BUBBLEGUM NOTHININGNESS

14.kp: TRUPA TRUPA - SISTER RAY

24.kp: FRANKIE AND THE WITCH FINGERS - EGGS LAID BRAIN

The last 3 finds especially. Jetstream Pony has a great 90s, shoegaze/psych feel to them. Trupa Trupa has a bunch of sounds - spotify describes them as art-rock, psychedelic post punk band. Frankie might be my favorite find of the year though. Very much has a Oingo/Devo/B-52s feel to it, but with a bit of a sped up rock edge to it. I have listened to that album multiple times in the last 12 hours.

I believe there is more good new music coming out now than anytime in history. It’s a natural evolution of artists building off of previous artists. It’s just that everything is so fragmented that it can be harder to find. (I acknowledge that this is an unpopular opinion.)

I agree. I read that there are over 100,000 new releases added to Spotify each day (although I think half of it is AI). I think a lot of it has to do with all the plaforms available for artists to post their tunes on, which were not available in the past.

It is really hard if not impossible to keep up with all the new releases. There are about a half-dozen Twitter accounts I follow that pre-screen and select what they think is the best song of the day or the week. The rest of the new material I find is either from my Spotify Release Radar and things that pop up on the YouTube algorithm.

24.lh - Hayes Carll - Progress of Man (Bitcoin & Cattle)

I just started to listen to Hayes Carll about a month ago because I came across This shirt at goodwill and figured I had to get it and then I started listening to his music and fortunately I liked it…

I didn't see them on the spotify playlist, did anyone add Seein Stars from Turnstile yet? I saw Birds, but not Seein Stars. I like the song, particularly since it sounds homagey to When The World Is Running Down You Make The Best Of What's Still Around from The Police.

Also I didn't see Time Makes Fools Of Us All by Father John Misty on the list yet.

I think those were 2025 releases, maybe not.
It's not common for drafters to pick songs from artists already chosen so that probably lead to only one Turnstile song being picked.

My Release Radar is your posts in the MAD threads.

I recommend Spotify Release Radar for those not familiar with it. It comes out comes out once a week on Friday, has new releases from artists you have listened to in the past, plus what the algorithm determines are related artists. I simply don't have the time to track who among my favorite bands have new releases out and the recommendations are often spot on for my tastes YMMV.

I find it kind of worthless. Looking at my Release Radar right now, it includes stuff by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Prince, and The Faces. Not what I’m looking for.

That is really unfortunate and I've heard that from some other posters here. I don't get why they do that as none of those artists would fall under the category of New Music to me.

I'm glad everybody here still makes an effort to discover new music, whatever their process. I've spent most of my life chasing the little buzz that comes with hearing something special for the first time. I still enjoy that when it happens whatever Spotify thinks my listening age is.

Automatic Love by Nourished in Time

A little R&B for the weekend
Max Potential was the one for me.

There were a few other artists I wanted to pick that I don’t think the best song from the album was chosen but that’s the fun part of music.

Also, I'm just having fun, some of my fave songs this year were from artists already picked, in the draft I wanted to highlight some other artists but now I want to make sure some of these great songs weren't missed.

This song came out Jan 1 and a following album never came.

Application for Release from the Dream was close to my favourite song of 2024 but I think I'm being teased here now with nothing new since Jan 1 2025
