Thoughts on new speedy Ortiz album?
I think somebody astutely called it Liz Phair. which doesn't necessarily mean a bad thing. didn't feel as raw to me as last stuff... which I preferred.

On first listen, Tranquility Base H&C sounds more like a Last Shadow Puppets record than what we've come to expect from Arctic Monkeys.  That's not a bad thing but not what I expected.  I'm hoping it's a grower

Take it easy for a little while / Four stars out of five

Full disclosure: I've never been that big an Arctic Monkeys fans so this latest release isn't all that disappointing to me.

Yeah it's not necessarily a bad album on merit but AM  elevates them to festival/arena headliners and they follow up with this?
They are headlining festivals next month!  I don’t see how they play much of this. Will give it more of a chance but not what I was hoping for.

As a former Seattlite I’m happy to hear that. Which station? 90.3 or 107.7? A different one?
90.3. They just landed an anonymous 10 million  dollar donation so they will continue to kick ###.
I listen to a lot of KEXP in the kitchen because Alexa is comically bad at finding my Spotify selections.  KEXP plays a good selection of new and old and it easier for me to find song names later on their website because they're Pacific time.

My other favorite streaming radio stations are WYMS Radio Milwaukee and BBC 6.  I used to listen to a broader range of stations when we had an Internet radio box with presets.  If you have an Echo, saving BBC 6 as a favorite in the app spared me from the first world agony of Alexa constantly choosing every BBC station except channel 6.

Anybody have any streaming radio recommendations that play good new music?

When I moved to Salt Lake City for my job many years ago I was concerned that I wouldn’t find a great local radio station on the level of KEXP.

I was pleasantly surprised to find KRCL/90.9.  Just as good.

I will check out those out, thanks.

I pretty much get all my music from KEXP. The morning weekday guy, John in the Morning (6-9), and weekday afternoon guy Kevin Cole (2-6) consistently play stuff I have never heard of. I Shazaam the ones I like then go on iTunes and go down the rabbit hole based around those songs and buy a bunch.

Will also be watching any recco's in here.

I’m particularly partial to the back to back shows on Saturday afternoons from 1-4 pm and 4-7 pm mountain time.

The former, Afternoon Delight, is mostly old and new school indie/alternative/punk. The latter, Smile Jamaica hosted by Robert Nelson since 1989, is one of the longest running US reggae radio shows currently airing.

Dunno if they're still around, but wfmu and kcrw were both good and hugely eclectic, with some new music formatting.

This bums me out about FR because they were one of the first indie bands that I gravitated towards. I remember vividly get excited discovering them here when NV does his yearly countdown thread.

Of all the recent deaths of musical artists this is the saddest for me. I’m having a surprisingly hard time with it

I think it’s a tribute to his “every person’s” appeal, both in song and life.  I attended 5 of his concerts, never met him or spoke to him directly, and yet, it feels like I lost a friend. That appears to be how he affected people.

####### awful.

been listening to that Parquet Courts leak daily (thanks again, eric!). a couple of duds, but what strikes me most is how much I like the flow of the album played in order. I'm so used to singles and shuffle- it's nice to listen to the album how the artists imagined it. mightve mentioned that it also helps that mardi gras beads song out.

but overall, I'm really liking it even though they're straying away from the hooky, guitar driven post sound that drew me to them in the first place. listening to "violence" right now- has an almost gil scott heron vibe with steady groove behind angry politico/social vocals. but of course, death will bring change is my favorite because of the backing vocals extravaganza going on in there.

oh! right... read that Pitchfork is having them play live the day before the record drops (it's official, May 18!):

Pitchfork is pleased to announce the next installment of Pitchfork Live. On Thursday, May 17, Parquet Courts will perform live from Rough Trade in Brooklyn. The broadcast will stream on Pitchfork’s homepage, Facebook, and YouTube. Tune in at 12 p.m. Eastern on May 17.

Saw Tim Hecker live last night. Amazing. His records are good, but this is the second time I've seen him in person, and both times it was transcendent. Massive walls of brutal bass, industrial noise and ambient static drone. It was also teeth rattlingly loud; consider earplugs if you ever go to one of his shows.

so that Malkmus album... there are a handful of good tracks, but generally I feel like he's slowly turning into Jerry Garcia.

How do I tell Spotify that I used to like Sun Kil Moon but the last 5 years have been absolutely dreadful?

Thought this too. More bouncy grooves with him highlighted.

Gotta say, I prefer the Savage tunes over the Brown tunes... But I give him credit for stretching out more.
Not gonna lie I thought Savage wrot and sang everything until I saw your video. Need to go back and see who wrote what.

It'll be really obvious

ETA..start with Savage doing almost Fight, Wide Awake and Brown doing Mardi Gras Beads and extrapolate from there
