Best albums of 2018 - playlists in post #1 (1 Viewer)

@El Floppo The Beth’s are playing in Williamsburg in February. I’m going to check it out, see if I can be the oldest guy there. Any interest?
mebbe. I like, not love them. and my eardrums can only take so much. after my broncho experience in bushwick, I can say you'll be older than a lot of these kids' parents.

plus I have to save my ear juice for IDLES in may.

Don't chime in here much but I follow along.  Good to see The Beths get mentioned as their album is one of my, if not THE, favorite album of the year.

So much so that I went to see them in Chicago at the Beat Kitchen back in October.  Even got myself a t-shirt.

They sounded great (although I was disappointed they didn't play "River Run: Lvl 1"), but the lead doesn't have much of a stage presence or ability to interact with the crowd.  She seemed ill-at-ease on the stage and mostly bantered with her band-mates with little emphasis on working the audience.  Their live act is still pretty raw, but like I said, if you're there for the music they won't disappoint.

I'm late 40's and while I was one of the older dudes in the crowd, I wasn't the ONLY middle aged guy there (it was basically a sausage-fest for that show).

HTH,

J

As I mentioned above, I've been following the thread.  I've enjoyed a number of the suggestions made by other posters.  I'm gonna go ahead and throw out some albums/artists that I've enjoyed this year that I don't think have been mentioned yet.

Loser - Caroline Rose
Someone introduced me to "Soul No 5' so I gave the album a listen.  It's like my 3rd or 4th favorite song off the album.  As an album goes, it's excellent from start to finish.  It's in contention for my AOTY.

Young Sick Camelia - St. Paul & The Broken Bones
Soul, man.  An album you can play that fits all occasions.

Pray for the Wicked - Panic! At the Disco
For years I thought this band was just Fall Out Boy.  Their leads sound so similar to me.  Not bashing Fall Out Boy, but I like these guys way better.  The album probably has the best energy of any I've listened to.

America - Thirty Seconds to Mars
Not in the running for AOTY, but still one of my favorites.

Hypochondriac - The Frights
This is what I'd hoped the new Twenty One Pilots album sounded like.

ATW - All Then Witches
Someone introduced me to these guys after releasing their previous album.  Stoner rock.  This album was an instant hit for me.

Find a Light - Blackberry Smoke
This album reminds me of the Georgia Satellites, if they focused more on making pop hits.  About as close to country as I can get.

Vicious - Halestorm
Maybe not overall AOTY, but certainly in the category of female fronted hard rock bands.  I'm a fan of the artist.

Shake the Spirit - Elle King
Loved her first album and, thus far, I feel like this one is just as good.  Love her bawdy, brassy voice and lyrics.  YMMV.

Take Good Care - The Revivalists
A beautiful spectrum of songs.  This one is a bullet, shooting up my charts, largely on the back of Oh No.

Hear the Rivers - Greenleaf
Brand spanking new stoner rock that has been getting replayed for the past week on my playlists.  Late to the show bus showing some life.

Other artists who put out albums this year that I'd suggest checking out.
28 Days in the Valley - Dorothy (not as good as her debut album but there's still value there)
Longing to be the Mountain  - King Buffalo (stoner rock)

I hope you receive as much satisfaction from these suggestions as I've enjoyed from yours!

When I saw Ladytron and Bob Mould in my Release Radar, I figured the songs would be as 'new' as the Rolling Stones track in there.  But, lo, new Ladytron and Bob Mould albums next year!

That Mould track is good

Part Chimp .. back with some B-sides or something, is good too

cleopatrick for those looking for some other stoner rockish stuff.  Album is called the boys... another Canadian two piece band which leads me to believe there is some sort of bass player shortage up north.

this week's RR...

new Yak album!

new Dan Deacon soundtrack (probably instrumental)

new Brian Jonestown Massacre album

new Circa Waves album

new Sleaford Mods single (feel like the last couple have fallen off the rails).

stumbled onto chicago outfit, Grapetooth who have an album out this year. kinda lo-fi post/pop-indie. I think I like them... but not sure yet.

usually hop-hop and soft bubble-gum indie. or have they mixed things up?
on the nose; more of the same I guess. Still pimping Earl Sweatshirt and Amen Dunes as geniuses. Stuff they push has a niche and some of it decent music, but there is no way I can see myself revisiting Snail Mail like ever again.

Convince me to listen to something other than "Future me hates me." I DARE YOU!
Haven't been addicted to an album like this in a long time and I've done my fair share of spreading the word. Proud father moment was that within an hour of my son coming home yesterday from his first semester in college he had the guitar out and playing Not Running

My daughter just got home from her first college term as well and I have her listening to this album too. Loves it.

Not a guitar player though.

I loved that glasvegas album from way back... seems like they've released an album of demos from that era- "home tapes". really like hearing these tracks again, and as different versions.

other stuff from release radar that's hopefully good...

GRMLN

Jay Som

Gringo Starr (decent ep)

wiley

white blanks

part chimp
