Best albums of 2019 (Spotify playlists in 1st post) (2 Viewers)

They sound more like someone I can’t place than the examples I gave. Sorta in my wheelhouse but might miss it slightly.
Thanks for the post. Loving this one.

I hear some BRMC.  Mark E. Smith on a couple. Ian McMulloch, Finn Andrews and Julian Casablancas on others. Right down the middle of one of my wheelhouses.

I need to listen to the new one and to the stuff I've playlisted. I have them paired with Metz in my mind, but that could be because I discovered both at the same time, more then them sounding the same.

Panda Bear's Buoys just came out. Listening now. Lots of vocals, not as experimental as his other stuff.

It's not as bad as the critics are saying, but I love Panda Bear's melodic stylings and I loved Panda Bear vs. The Grim Reaper when the critics didn't, so YMMV. Straightforward.

RIYL the Beach Boys as much as I do.

eta* Also, the magazines and entities that have never liked Panda Bear still don't like him. Imagine that!

eta2* It's Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper. I get confused because the cover art on the album is almost clearly "Vs."

I love his voice. I wish his instrumentation was less electro

Yeah, he's not for everybody with his music. I happen to dig the electro collage art that he does. I don't know why. I was never a big Animal Collective fan.

My affection for Panda Bear is weird and out of line with my usual musical tastes, so I completely understand your lament.

I like his voice enough to give it a listen this week.

Tried and tried again with the Spielbergs given the love but ... meh

FIDLAR on the other hand is on repeat, can’t stop listening (starting with track 2 😗)

I think of Panda Bear as a band that critics fawn over but no one actually listens to.

i.e. Pitchfork gave Meets Grim Reaper 8.7 and Person Pitch 9.4!!!

Pitchfork loves him. Person Pitch got universal acclaim. Conceded. But I thought critics gave Meets Grim Reaper and Tomboy tepid reviews and are sort of doing the same/killing this one. Maybe I just think he should be rated higher.

And I definitely listen to Panda Bear. I think Meets Grim Reaper is awesome. It's probably my favorite of his.  Also think that Person Pitch is awesome to me until he gets a little Godspeed! You Black Emperor with the train track noises.  And I dig Tomboy.

Huh, just checked Metacritic for Meets Grim Reaper - 82%. I guess I'm wrong on that.

Huh, just checked Metacrtic for Tomboy - 77%. Wrong on that, too.

That's all pretty good. Maybe I should retract my statement about the critics.

But there are people that listen to Panda Bear. I paid forty bucks for a repressing of Person Pitch on vinyl. It's delicious. Twelve inch played at forty-five speed (for true audiophilia) colored vinyl from that place that does all the cool reissues.

Thanks for the straightening out, NV. Spin had Meets Grim Reaper as its album of the week upon quick glance.

I have Person Pitch on CD   I guess it's from the tail end of the days I bought those things. I haven't listened to much from him since, so I'm probably just speaking for myself.

No, I think there's an element of that. A lot of my friends into music don't listen to him; often don't know who he is.

floppinho's school is part of a larger organization that houses his k-12 school, a music school for the public, and a performance hall.

they host something annually called the "ecstatic music festival".. Deerhoof and Tigue (percussion ensemble) are playing this Sat. Wye Oak and Brooklyn youth chorus in march, as well as the out-there kids group floppinho did last year playing with todd rundgren and ethel.

I get to fart with impunity on the streets, which is a plus, but otherwise- these are the kinds of things that make me feel better about living in nyc.

Yeah it’s bad. He’s always seemed like a petulant ####head to me.
Just an absolute **** to people in general, has always been the story there.. I think he got sober fairly recently?  I haven't had much time to dig into this, he could potentially come out OK if he handled this like an adult who actually learned something, but then he'd also be the first in history?

Probably a hopeless tool and he's usually too country for me but I kinda liked the new f word single

Problem is he exposed himself to a 14 year old via Skype. He denies it with the qualification that he would never engage in anything like that with someone he KNEW was underage but a lot of his texts hinted at the fact that he knew she was underage. Said stuff like people would compare him to R Kelly if their exchanges became public.

My release radar looks awesome this week: Delicate Steve, Clowns, together PANGEA, Foster The People, Against Me!, Dude York.... but the first two songs are both Czarface vs Ghostface and I'm pretty sure that's all I'm going to listen to this week.

rr of interest this week:

sleaford mods (who are apparently in a pissy-match with IDLES for them not being "true" working class... should probably concentrate on making better music given their recent singles)

together pangaea

GRMLN (surprise!)

Foals

catfish & bottlemen

lizzo

versing

bodega

shinehead (???!l- god help me- expectations couldn't be any lower for this, and yet...)

crocodiles

plastic pinks

Yak, J. Spaceman

Song of the day: Gang of Youths - Say Yes to Life

My dad died ten years ago today and I'm almost able to talk myself out of feeling sad or pity for myself for more than just a few minutes here and there but it's really getting to me today, but this song always seems to make me feel a bit better.  Anyway, I'm just using this thread as my personal support group for a while before I go out and meet some friends later on and distract myself.  to everyone in the music threads.

There's a sadness in the heart
Now of the imitation zone
Don't forget about your brothers
If you go at it alone
And I could almost take a whole life
To disclose how I feel about the now
But can't give you an insightful conclusion

So if time is predicated
On abstractions in a void
Do not subjugate yourself
Capitulating to the noise
If I could reach out through the screen
And give you something to believe in I would
But I'm with you in amongst the confusion

It's ok
Don't fear
Go be part of the new sincere
Do not let your heart go
To #### enslaved to ephemera

Our childhood is memory
Still ascended high in dreams
And I'm suspending what I held for
Preconceptions of my being
I only say this to affirm
Our time is short
But we've will to carry on
Transcend with our scars and contusions

I was furious and dumb
Lighting fires through the town
I'd play the fiddle and forget whatever
I was pissed about
I know that most of you relates
To some extent
And god, I know how lame it sounds
But I'm glad I became more human

Stay
Don't go
We're like halfway
Through the halftime show
Do not let this one end
Before you
Emerge as the winner

Hey it's me and I'm bringing you a case of Dry
And words un-engendered #### this
Dumb city sleeps in the night
And I won't leave you hanging in the wind
So let me love with a vengeance
My sad sweet and unfinished friend

And we can go and mock the skyline
Now, those bourgie windows
Full of ########s we don't know a thing about
You wanna feel absolved tonight
I've heard what you're saying
It's ok not to be so alright

But don't be alone
Did I tell you that I spent most
Of my sister's wedding stoned?
Say what you want
With blood and bone
And stick a finger in their faces
When they say you're overblown

Say yes to sun!
Say yes to pain!
Say yes to sticking with a city
Through a thousand days of rain!

Say yes to grace!
Say no to spite!
Say yes to this!
Say yes to you!
Say yes to me!
Say yes to love!
Say yes to life!

Say, say yes to life!
