Cleveland Browns (7 Viewers)

has there ever been a draft with the first four/five picks all being QBs?

nice recall

It of course is possible that happens again this year - I'm not trying to say it can not.

Just threw up in my mouth a little. Saw McNown start against the 49ers on Jerry Rice Day. Last home game at Candlestick. Bears got shut out like 20 to 0. Never made it past midfield.  I think the Bears WRs were dropping passes on purpose.  But on D they keyed on Rice and he got 1 catch. Terrell Owens broke Rice's single game reception record that day. On Jerry Rice Day. Anyway.

Browns released 10 players today:

Terminated contract (2):

DB Jason McCourty

DB B.W. Webb

Waived (8):

DL Ricky Ali'ifua

OL Zach Banner

DL Collin Bevins

LB Jeremy Cash

OL Joseph Cheek

WR Sammie Coates

DB Trevon Hartfield

RB Josh Rounds

#Browns coach Hue Jackson just said at a press conference that Tyrod Taylor is their starting QB for 2018: "He’s going to be the starting quarterback. There is no competition."

Trade: The #Browns have traded Jason McCourty to his brother Devin McCourty and the Patriots… They are swapping 6th and 7th round picks this year.

#Browns coach Hue Jackson just said at a press conference that Tyrod Taylor is their starting QB for 2018: "He’s going to be the starting quarterback. There is no competition."
Can someone in Berea drive over to the facility, politely but forcefully snap off that microphone and ram it down Hue's throat? TIA

I'll cover the lawyer bills.

Greetham: 11 takes from Dorsey & Jackson's press conferences

1. Browns will draft a quarterback

2. Tyrod Taylor is the starter

3. Plan for rookie is to sit behind Taylor

4. Jackson said he wanted Taylor last year

5. Shon Coleman to get first shot at left tackle

6. Browns see Landry in long-term plans

7. Could Taylor be the franchise quarterback

8. Dorsey said the Carlos Hyde signing doesn't rule out Saquon Barkley

9. Anticipate more free agent signings

10. Still could trade the overall top pick in the draft

11. Missing Pro Days for Mayfield or Rosen

Why announce this? Same as with the Jets with Josh McCown. When you have a mediocre veteran option why are you handing him the starting job? Let the rookie (or another vet on the roster) at least have a chance to beat him out by showing something in preseason. What advantage does this give you.

It just shows more incompetence from this staff. There is no reason to make that statement. It will be interesting to see how this draft unfolds for CLE. For the fans sake I hope they do not find a way to butcher the great opportunity

That worked out well for the Ohio teams.

Gonna be the same this year...teams will pass on Edge, Holt, Bailey for Akili Smith.

I think it's the same as most years. Cleveland, NYJ, Buffalo, SF and a few others all needed QBs last year and were at or close to top of the draft, and the QB prospects were in the same range as this years class (Trubisky, Watson, Mahomes) yet we saw 2 of them drop while teams like Cleveland, NYJ, Buffalo and SF passed on them.

I have serious doubts that the first four picks, let alone the first five picks will all be QBs. I have doubts the Giants or Denver take QBs as well. It will be interesting to see.

I'm starting to think the Jets may move up though - there's a ton of intrigue this year no doubt.
I agree that this draft is the same in that every draft is different.

The draft this year is different on any number of levels.  Free agency and trades have tipped the hands on the teams who are seeking franchise QBs,

Only one team landed a franchise QB in free agency, the rest were able to get bridge QBs in hope of drafting and developing a franchise QB for the future.

Teams never get franchise QBs in free agency - that's what made the Cousins situation so unique. And all along only one team was going to be able to get him while the rest settled for scraps.

First, I don't recall so many QB needy teams at the top six spots and another team like Buffalo who simply cannot be ignored due to their aggressive moves to acquire extra picks in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounds and then moving up into the top-12.

The Cousins FA feeding frenzy and the success of young QBs like Wentz, Watson, Geoff, etc has chummed the draft waters.

The Browns have passed on two top rookie QBs, they are foaming at the mouth to get a QB and I think other teams are going to be aggressive.

I just think we'll going to see four QBs gone in the first five picks this year.

I think you may be right, but I'll "predict" 2-3.

Cleveland at 1 and the Bills and/or Jets will likely trade up to slots 2/3/4. I do not think the Giants or Denver take one.

Well, not like we didn't already know Hue sucks

We apparently still have the most cap space.  Cmon, sign Suh and Badger.  Trade picks 1 and 4 for Brady, Gronk, Edelman, and White.  Let's do this

  • I have never bought the theory that the Giants won't take a QB.
Eli was benched last year.  He ranked 25th in the league of all quarterbacks.  He is 37 and has not done little over the past three years.  Add, Odell being seen smoking a blunt with coke on a bed where he's pushing a girl to have sex with another dude and this talk of taking a RB or a guard and riding off into the sunset with another SB seems ludicrous.

I dug into this talk about not taking a QB and their isn't anything substantial behind it.

I am and have always been convinced, much like the Browns always taking a QB with the first pick, that the New York Giants are going to take a quarterback with the #2 pick of the NFL draft.

  • Then their is Denver and John Elway.  The super genius who basically had Peyton Manning fall into his lap after he inherited the high pick that landed Von Miller.
Not so easy when you have to find your QB eh Elroy?

The Vikings went out and paid a ton to land Kirk Cousins when they had three guys who other teams scrambled to get after they got Cousins.  They not only let Teddy and Bradford go but they also decided not to sign Case Keenum, why?  He simply is not that good.  He isn't very athletic, not all that big, can't move in the pocket like you'd want a franchise QB to move, and doesn't have the big gun.  He isn't' anything special and he's' 30 so he's not a kid, and he kinda crapped the bed in the biggest game of his career.

So he's your guy John Elway?

Nope.  Elway didn't pay him like a franchise QB,  he doesn't come close to the sort of prototype that Elway reportedly prefers.   Add,  Elway and his staff coached both Mayfield and Josh Allen at the Senior Bowl and are making a tremendous effort to attend and document every Pro Day of the top QBs.  They are decidedly still in the hunt, they aren't done.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/broncos/2018/03/16/case-keenum-denver-broncos-nfl-draft-quarterback/433082002/

...Given that the Broncos own the No. 5 pick in the draft and that Elway and his staff have been closely scouting the top passers in the class, the quarterback intrigue isn’t over in Denver.

Keenum’s introductory press conference in Denver was delayed until Friday because Elway, head coach Vance Joseph and other Broncos officials spent the past two days attending pro days at the University of Oklahoma to see Baker Mayfield and UCLA to see Josh Rosen.

The Broncos will send a contingent to Josh Allen’s pro day in Laramie, Wyo., next week, though Elway will not personally attend, and have a private workout scheduled in April with USC quarterback Sam Darnold.
They  may not move up, they may not have to move up but if a QB falls into their lap do you think they'll take a guard or  a defender?

Yup, If you have the opportunity to pick up a franchise QB while currently having an aging and deteriorating one it's a no brainer. The last thing any team would want to do is to fall into a situation similar to that of what the Browns have experienced for the last 20 years.

So considering we still have an enormous amount of cap space remaining, with maybe what like 10-15 million allocated for rookies (not real sure how much, just a guess), who are guys we need to be looking at extending (other than Duke of course).

That's if the are in love with a qb and perhaps they are not.  All the top guys have flaws.  Big ones at that.  If the giants think that Barkley would give them a short window to win a title with Eli and odb and the rest I could see it.

Having said that after watching gettleman work he plays the long game more often then not.

Jets just gave up a ton to move up from #6 to #3, obviously for a QB.  This is why the Browns have to go QB at #1 if they like someone.

Like the odds of Barkley being there at #4 now too.  IMO the Giants will either take a QB or kill a team that does IMO.

Top three go QB and Browns get Mayfield and Barkley to finally get it right.

Holy Moley.

Jets send three second-round picks to Colts, move up from No. 6 to No. 3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver?  Buffalo? Arizona?  Other teams wanting a QB, Barkley, Chubb?

Cleveland Browns have the #4 pick and mill carefully mull over any offers.
