Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (1 Viewer)

Mansterdam is about to time out and I have a meeting to run to. He doesn’t need anything in the categories I need anyway, plus I doubt he’d take this even if he did.

Yo Mama chooses the sit down for lunch option and selects:

#96 - 99 Problems - Jay-Z

Simey’s least favorite song (or tied with the song about all those balloons).

Also not a big fan of the one about bottles of beer on the wall, I understand.

Bond didn't even order a Martini.  He ordered a Vesper.  And don't even get me started on shaking a cocktail with only base spirits.
You sure he never ordered a martini? He’s had a lot of drinks. Also isn’t the vesper just a type of martini?  Not that it matters what a fictional character drinks and I’m getting a dirty vodka martini regardless.

The "shaken; not stirred" line comes from Casino Royale.  A Vesper is a martini variation, but there are some pretty significant differences.  It contains both gin and vodka.  And no vermouth.  In Fleming's time it was made Kina Lillet, but that hasn't been made since the 60's.  In the 70s, at the height of Bond's movie popularity, it was near impossible to get a drink that resembled what he ordered because bitter apertivos just weren't available (at least here in the States).  Today, people can try to approximate the order with Cocchi Americano or some other bitter apertivo with lots of cinchona bark in the mix.

Ian Fleming made up the Vesper martini in the first 007 novel in 1953.  Since then, the character has usually favored a regular vodka martini shaken not stirred in both the books and movies but has enjoyed many other libations over the years.

Did you see the How To Drink video on this?  He called it sacrilege too to shake the cocktail, but tried them side by side and said he preferred the taste of the shaken one.  Stirred is definitely a better-looking one though.

This place makes a great dirty martini so I’ll just let them do their thing. I don’t think Bond gets them dirty but that’s how I like it :)
I always preferred Tito's over Kettle One until I had a K1 dirty martini. I still prefer Tito's overall, but keep a bottle of Kettle One around for when I'm feelig dirty.

I'll spare us another dissertation on my dislike of the vodka martini.  I have a bottle of Tito's at home, but I only use it for penne with vodka sauce.  Meanwhile, I have like 4 distinct gins and god knows how many different rums (the Smugglers Cove book has you buy like 7 distinct rum styles for optimum Tiki preparation).

Agree on gin vs vodka

I live about ten blocks from Smuggler's Cove but haven't been there in years.

They're great for a relative noob like me, I've managed to pick up a lot of good ideas and better techniques from watching them.  Are there other good Youtube channels you've seen?  I like Anders Erickson's channel too.
I think Greg has the most interesting videos (but I enjoy the woke digressions that drive some of his followers crazy).  Cocktail Chemistry has interesting drinks, but he's not a storyteller. Behind the Bar with Cara Devine is OK too if you prefer cute Aussies.

I think I was sold on Greg when he was making the Tiki Death Punch from Friends and he spent half the video talking about how awful Ross is.

Nice knowledge drop! Are you a professional bartender?

I dislike Gin. It taste too much like pine to me.  I like a vodka martini, straight up, extra dry, with three olives.

I've been waiting for someone to draft this one.  I can't pretend to be the biggest fan of the song itself, though it's not bad.  However, I think it's amazing that this song has had such a cultural impact to actually become a long-lasting slang term.  I unintentionally used it in my Whitney pick, and it looks like @Ramsay Hunt Experience used it once upthread as well.

This song title has quite literally become a common verb in public parlance.  I bet if you asked people where the term "stan" came from, 90% would have no idea it's from an Eminem song....but this uniqueness really speaks to the overall impact of this song.
Never knew anything about any of this either .

ok... @Eephus

what was the place on Haight... Persian Zam Zam? Or just Zam Zam? With the owner/bartender who opened the place when he felt like- often not on a Saturday night- and only served Gin Martinis... and would kick you out if you ordered a vodka one. Or maybe it was vodka martinis, and would kick you out if you ordered a gin one. THIS IS WHY I NEVER WENT TO THE ZAM ZAM

Krista texted me and asked that I extend her apologies.

She can only see the thread, but cannot logon on her phone. So she can see what we ar edoing but cannot remind us not to mess up the Song List sheet.

If her picks comes up, she requested I text her for it, or give her number to someone else who can.

Also a bunch of legalese about suing the owners of the rent house she's in for not providing proper internet service.

The full name on the sign is Persian Aub Zam Zam but it was shortened to the Zam Zam.  The owner/bartender Bruno wouldn't kick people out for ordering a vodka martini, he just refused to make them.  He would frequently 86 patrons for other reasons though.  He was always fine with us even though other people I know said he was racist.

Bruno sold the place a  long time ago and died in 2000. The current owners kept the name and decor but serve beer (and presumably vodka martinis) now.  I haven't been there since I cornholed with Zilla when he lived in SF.

oh... right... I'm touching... I'm touching... and...

Bikini Kill- Rebel Girl (1996) #296

Kathleen Hanna can do no wrong. I'd have drafted any of her bands in here... Le Tigre, Bikini Kill, Julie Ruin... and might even get a little bit of hubby Ad Roc thrown in.

I obviously didn't go there that much, even though we were living walking distance in the inner sunset on Hugo for a while. It's exactly the kind of thing my brain can't retain. I feel like I'd always end up there with different friends who were not fans of not getting the drink they wanted... I'm certain this would lead to the 86, the 23 skidoo.

I remember Bruno was picky about the few tables in the back room. Your party had to exactly match the number of chairs.  Leaving empty chairs and especially moving them was not tolerated.
