Since no entry is eliminated it really comes down to hitting on your bracket prediction. Here is the ideal scenario:

  1. Pick the Super Bowl teams and all six of your players should be from them.
  2. Pick six players off the teams that lose the conference championship games
  3. Divisional rounds are tougher because more teams to choose from but you gotta pick from the losers of this round
  4. Wild Card Round is taking six off of teams you think will lose so you don't get limited the next round.
If you are correct on your Conference Round and Super Bowl teams you should be in the running.
This is exactly how I attacked it! The cumulative score and score multipliers really make it interesting and challenging!

I think after about 7-8 variation changes I'm set, but if course there is 24 whole hours tomorrow to tinker....again.

I used to be in a march madness BB that worked that way - it was a great way to do it.
The multipliers really make a massive difference.

So my first take is the hard part is handicapping Chargers/Jags, Giants/Vikings, and Cowboys/Bucs.

Talking heads seem to favor Jags, Giants, Cowboys. I'm going the other way in all 3, but it may not matter as I have all 3 losing in the next round. Not picking the Giants changes the complexion of the next round since NYG is the 6 seed / lowest remaining seed assuming Seattle is one and done.

Chiefs over the 49ers in the Super Bowl.

Pinned this thread.

Y'all have fun.

I'm sure there will be plenty who hate the new format and such. We thought it would be an improvement and good. Mostly, we're just trying to give away $1,000 as a way of saying thanks to folks who purchased a Footballguys Premium Subscription. Have fun!
ANYTHING is an improvement whereby you can start zero players in the first round and still win.

FWIW there are 1024 combinations of AFC Champ,. NFC. Champs, AFC runner up and NFC runner up.

Based on this, the eventual winner may have the entire bracket correct.

Due to the multiplier, It's difficult to envision a scenario where this would not be the case.

Last year we had a 4 beat a 2 and a 4 beat a 6.

This year that would be.....
Jacksonville winning at Buffalo
And
Giants losing at Tampa Bay

Not sure we would have someone going all in on that scenario (til now)

I am not so sure you can start zero players in the first round. That would mean you take 12 Chiefs and 12 Eagles. Are there even that many choices?

You can't have zero players in round one, having less than 6 round one is an illegal lineup...I found that out during my many many tinker sessions.

There are a lot of different strategies one could use.
I trying to decide if I want to go all in on my bracket or try and use the bonus multipliers and get as many points as possible in each round.

Some crazy ideas I've considered.

Create my own power rankings and bracket for each conference.
Super Bowl - 6 QB's from the top 6 teams in my rankings. Unless I'm way off in my bracket I'll have 2 QBs getting 5x points.
Conference - Elite TEs, RBs & WRs from the Top 6 teams in my rankings
Divisional - 6 QBs from the bottom 8 in my rankings
Wild Card - Elite TEs, RBs & WRs from the bottom 8 in my rankings
This is a sure loser. You’ll be spotting 4 players getting 4x points and miss out on the QBs getting 3x the round before

Well I'm done not going to change it. The strategy I came up sounded good in my head. So it's for sure a losing strategy.

I am talking about past contests. If I remember correctly we had a winner that played zero players in the first week. The cuts were by percentage and week 1 turned out to have no cuts.

I am pretty sure most of us will come up with the same strategy. Of course you have to pick the right teams and players to win.

You could pick some MIN players in the divisional round. You're already counting on MIN beating NYG when you go with a SF vs. DAL conference championship matchup - if NYG beats MIN then SF-DAL will play in the divisional round. So you could take Cousins & Jefferson in the divisional round if you think they'll outscore your Chargers, and fill in more QBs or other players in the wild card.

How many points do you guys think the winner of this contest will score, including the multipliers?

It might be fun for everyone to take a guess and see who gets the closest.

I'm goiong to predict that the winner will end up scoring about 1625 points.

Take a guess and post it.

It's definitely not a given that the top 6 scorers in the super bowl will be split 3 and 3. I'd say it's more likely than not that they won't.

It's also possible that the super bowl winning QB could score more than 5/3 times as many points in the championship game as in the super bowl. He probably won't, but it's definitely possible, and going that route would be a way to differentiate your lineup from the others who picked the same final four as you.

BTW I'm not trying to give any secret hints or anything. I haven't looked into the entry database at all (yet; I'll freeze my own entry and cease any strategy talk when/if I do). If anyone cares, here is my current rooster.

After at least 15 or so iterations - here's mine, I had many of the same thoughts as you all, just looked at it slightly differently with the multipliers in different rounds, looks like I'm in the minority thinking Buff/Philly in the SB:

Alot of very similar entries. As for the scoring, the 1 pt per 20 passing and 6 per passing TD really favors QB's. Just to give you an idea, here are the top 24 from the 14 playoff teams, in terms of PPG:
QB Mahomes - 32.7
QB Allen - 31.3
QB Hurts - 31.0
QB Burrow - 28.6
QB Smith - 25.0
QB Purdy - 24.6
QB Cousins - 24.2
QB Prescott - 24.2
QB Lawrence - 23.9
QB Herbert - 23.0
QB Brady - 22.4
QB Jones - 22.4
TE Kelce - 21.8
WR Jefferson - 21.6
WR Chase - 20.5
WR Hill - 20.4
RB Ekeler - 19.1
WR Diggs - 18.9
RB McCaffrey - 18.5
WR Brown - 17.9
WR Lamb - 17.7
WR Allen - 16.6
RB Barkley - 15.8
TE Kittle - 15.5

And for those wondering about kickers and defenses, the top K averaged 10.5, and the top D averaged 8.4. Also, I chose to leave QB's off for BAL and MIA, but would surely consider starting them in the first round, if I knew more.

In the Wildcard round, you have:

Joe Burrow - QB - CIN
Austin Ekeler - RB - LAC
Tyreek Hill - WR - MIA
Dalvin Cook - RB - MIN
Saquon Barkley - RB - NYG

Don't know if this will make it through 48 hours, but...

In the Wildcard round, you have:

Trevor Lawrence - QB - JAX
Travis Etienne - RB - JAX

Geno Smith - QB - SEA
Tom Brady - QB - TB

In the Divisional round (points multiplied by 2), you have:

Here is how the 9 implied brackets in this thread look.

To make the Super Bowl
6 SF
6 KC
3 PHI
3 BUF
0 all others

To make the conference championship
9 SF (6-3)
9 KC (6-3)
8 PHI (3-5)
7 BUF (3-4)
2 CIN (0-2)
1 DAL (0-1)
0 all others

Results of wildcard games
9-0-0 SF vs. SEA
6-1-2 MIN vs. NYG
3-5-0 TB vs. DAL
9-0-0 BUF vs. MIA
8-0-1 CIN vs. BAL
0-6-3 JAX vs. LAC

6-1-2 MIN vs. NYG means that 6 picked MIN (will take at least 1 zero if MIN loses, either by having a MIN player in the divisional round or later or by having a conference championship game which can only happen if MIN wins), 1 picked NYG, 2 picked neither (will not take zeros from either team losing, since they don't have any players from either team outside of the wildcard round & the matchups in the rest of their bracket can happen regardless of which team wins)

Incomplete brackets
6 entries picked every game
1 entry skipped 1 game (they can avoid getting any zeros regardless of who wins that game)
1 entry skiped 2 games
1 entry skipped 4 games

At even money, which side of this bet do you want?

The winning entry's super bowl lineup will be the six highest-scoring (available) players in the super bowl game.

I'll take the "no" side of that. I'm sure people who handicap better than me will take advantage of favorable matchups giving them an edge of when to play which assets.

For example, I see you are playing Purdy in the championship round versus JuJu Smith Schuster in the Super Bowl. That's counter-intuitive and I assumed based on your beliefs about matchups.

I’d take the yes side of this bet. If you get the Super Bowl teams correct, you are bound to hit on at least 3-4 players that will produce that week. The 5x multiplier on those will be the difference maker.

ETA - re reading, I think I mis interpreted the statement. Yes, I think the winning entry will have the correct Super Bowl teams, and the players they have will be difference makers in the contest. But, NO, they may not have the highest scorers all in their lineup…probably will have at least 3-4 of the highest scorers. I do think it is likely an unexpected name or two creeps into the top six list that maybe no one will have. So I guess I take the NO side of the bet.

How many points do you guys think the winner of this contest will score, including the multipliers?

It might be fun for everyone to take a guess and see who gets the closest.

I'm goiong to predict that the winner will end up scoring about 1625 points.

Take a guess and post it.

I’ll take the Under at 1014.

interesting to see all of these contest entry postings. My current (and likely only) entry is very similar to most of them with the likely teams making the SB and Conf Championship games. Lots of QBs in each round. Only 2 TEs that seem to be worth starting, and they’re using in the last 2 rounds with most guessing KC and SF will go to at least the Conf Championship round. I expect my entry to be pretty chalk and wonder how many will have identical rosters to mine.

The more I keep thinking about it the more I like leveraging the multipliers vs picking an accurate bracket.

The Bengals, Bills, and Chiefs feel like rock, paper, scissors and I'm giving the Eagles a slight bump but I could easily see the 49ers or Cowboys in the SB.

Thank you @TheWinz for posting the PPG for the top 24. That's what I was thinking when I went into my crazy idea of spreading those guys out across the entire bracket. So here it is the crazy idea lineup.

I decided to use @jon007 submission, just to show how the points will work out. Let's assume every player scores their weekly averages, and also assume he is right in that the SB will be between the 6 teams he has in the last 2 rounds. The absolute best he can do is:

Week 4 - QB Mahomes (32.7) + QB Hurts (31.0) = 63.7 x 5 = 318.5
Week 3 - TE Kelce (21.8) + WR Chase (20.5) + RB McCaffrey (18.5) + WR Brown (17.9) = 78.7 x 3 = 236.1
Week 2 - QB Cousins (24.2) + QB Lawrence (23.9) + QB Brady (22.4) + TE Kittle (15.5) = 86.0 x 2 = 172.0
Week 1 - QB Smith (25.0) + WR Jefferson (21.6) + WR Hill (20.4) + RB Ekeler (19.1) + RB Barkley (15.8) + WR Evans (15.0) = 116.9

In the Wildcard round, you have:
Austin Ekeler - RB - LAC
Tyreek Hill - WR - MIA
Justin Jefferson - WR - MIN
Saquon Barkley - RB - NYG
Geno Smith - QB - SEA
Mike Evans - WR - TB

In the Divisional round (points multiplied by 2), you have:
Trevor Lawrence - QB - JAX
Justin Herbert - QB - LAC
Kirk Cousins - QB - MIN
Daniel Jones - QB - NYG
George Kittle - TE - SF
Tom Brady - QB - TB

In the Championship round (points multiplied by 3), you have:
Stefon Diggs - WR - BUF
Ja'Marr Chase - WR - CIN
CeeDee Lamb - WR - DAL
Travis Kelce - TE - KC
A.J. Brown - WR - PHI
Christian McCaffrey - RB - SF

In the Super Bowl (points multiplied by 5), you have:
Josh Allen - QB - BUF
Joe Burrow - QB - CIN
Dak Prescott - QB - DAL
Patrick Mahomes - QB - KC
Jalen Hurts - QB - PHI
Brock Purdy - QB - SF
In div round at least 2 of those won't count right?
and in the championship round at least 2 won't count (probably more I haven't checked versus the seeding) and in the SB round 4 won't count. This dog doesn't hunt.

I never really liked that "you can only count two players per NFL team, except in the super bowl, where everybody counts" rule. It was necessary but kludgey. Frankly, a lot of people over the years made entries that indicated that they might not have fully grasped the rules. So I tried to maintain the same spirit while simplifying things.

Here is the rules summary:
  1. You will select six players for each round of the playoffs, a total of 24 players. No positional requirements or salary caps. Take any players you want.
  2. Each player's fantasy points are doubled in the Divisional round, tripled in the Championship round, and quintupled (i.e. multiplied by five) in the Super Bowl. The winner is the contestant who accrues the most total points across all four rounds of the playoffs.
  3. The entry deadline is Saturday, January 14 at 4:30 PM ET. That is, you must select all your players for all rounds before the start of the playoffs.

I'm hoping to be able to do a soft launch tonight or tomorrow morning.

The dumbing down of America. Shouldn't have messed with perfection. Get off my lawn.

Much prefer the old contest and strategy associated with it. Mainly because I like the salary cap aspect.

Pick the two Super Bowl teams and plug in their QB, best WR, and best RB/TE/WR flex. That's six players.
Pick the two championship teams that lose and plug in their QB, best WR, and best RB/TE/WR flex. That's 12 players.
Round 2 could be interesting. Four of the QBs are spoken for so you want the other 4 and the next two best players. You might sneak in a player that won't make your top 3 next week but likely should be picking the RB/WR/TE on the team with the closest spread to the team you are picking to advance.
Round one you have four QBs from the teams you expect to lose and the two best players of the RB/WR/TE from those teams.
One tiny mistake. Round one you can have 6 QB's, not just 4
That's a recipe to finish high but not win.

You're gonna need to hit on skill players that have big weeks too.
