STL takes QB Aaron Murray
They do? In the 3rd?
Pick updated with a write-up. Are you asking about the player, round or both. :) Rationale explained above. In brief, it could be a different QB and a later round, this could be a case of reflecting my take. It is what I would do. There is IMO zero question they take a QB, just a matter of when. Murray could represent not just a vastly upgraded backup (which they need), but possibly more. So if you are going to take an upgraded backup/developmental prospect at the position, might as well do it right than taking a half measure. If they add a day two pick or two, chance increases that it happens here. Also, if a QB like Mettenberg is already picked off, that adds urgency (as he could be the next target in line, or even higher for that matter, for multiple teams).

3.72 - Minnesota Vikings - Zach Mettenberger, QB - LSU

I wasn't all that interested in him at first but the more I read the more I like his chances working with Norv Turner. He seems like an Aikman or Flacco style QB that would really mesh with the Turner style.

Good article here.

It would be great if they could bring Cassel back for one more year (can't believe I'm saying that) and let Mettenberger's knee and ability develop one more year before he takes over.
Honestly, not a fan of this pick.

Saints looking to trade Mark Ingram and somebody for cash considerations. Pick whoever you want, including Brees and Graham to throw in. Whatever will get him out of New Orleans.

And to those that thought he "improved" last year, please watch some more NO tape. . .

3.79 The New York Giants Select Billy Turner, OT, North Dakota State

 • Undervalued because he's from a small school.
 • Played well during the Senior Bowl
 • Has a nasty streak you can't teach
 • Has some flaws in the passing game that can be taught
Finally! One of my Tackle targets fell to us!

With the 80th pick, the Bears select Chris Smith, DE, Arkansas.

The Bears defense continues to get younger and better up front. I haven't seen film on him, but he's rated around overall 65 on my board. Here's Rob Rang's write up on Smith:

STRENGTHS: Thickly-built pass-rusher with enough burst, lateral agility and underrated strength to harass opposing quarterbacks off the edge or when used as a stand-up rusher up the middle. Versatile defender who lined up as a LDE, RDE and even as a traditional outside linebacker for the Razorbacks.

Flashes a quick burst off the snap to cross the face of offensive tackles, as well as an effective spin move back inside to counter his exterior speed rush. Uses his natural leverage advantage effectively, showing enough strength to bull rush opponents into the backfield and hold up at the point of attack to handle run defending duties.

Very good closing speed when the ball is near. Strong, wrap-up tackler who brings the ballcarrier to the ground.

WEAKNESSES: Jack of all trades, master of none type who may be viewed as a 'tweener DE/OLB prospect. Highly inconsistent burst off the snap. Too often is the last defender off the ball when rushing out of a three-point stance. Even when he beats tackles initially, Smith tops-out quickly and shows only average flexibility in turning the corner to close.

Lack of preferred height and length is apparent in how often Smith appears to lose track of the ball, as well as his struggles in disengaging from blocks. Rarely is asked to drop into coverage at Arkansas.

COMPARES TO: Daryl Tapp, Redskins: Like Tapp, Smith possesses the combination of burst upfield and underrated strength at the point of attack to help a franchise, but size limitations could mean journeyman status in the NFL.

--Rob Rang (1/22/14)

The Bears have imported SEC defenders to improve their by far league worst run defense and add some pass rush too.

1 (18) C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama

2 (49) Ego Ferguson, DT, LSU

3 (80) Chris Smith, DE, Arkansas

OK. I expect some groans for this one, but I'm a believer, so if you don't like it tough.

No CBs that I really liked here, so I had to move on. Miami could use a RB with a set of balls instead of the two dainty guys they have now, but I think the tone of the draft allows me to wait (but I know we are stopping after this round anyway). I wanted another OL, but that's not going to happen. My BPA here is Donte Moncrief, WR MISSISSIPPI.

Dude runs every route. Fearless WR that doesn't shortarm passes. Is used to being leaned on. Strong and has a uncommonly full grown body right out of school. He IMO is one of the most complete WRs in the draft. I understand why he falls, but I think he is going to be an excellent WR with the playstyle in the mold of Anquan Boldin.

Does Miami really need a WR? I think so. They have a collection of niche WRs like Hartline and Wallace, but not a single guy they can call any route to and throw to him any down and distance. I think the existence of Moncrief on the field will allow for more opportunities to Wallace, which is what he should be used as in the first place.

Even if it's not a great fit, I think he's too good to let drop any further, and passing up big talent for need is a mistake in the NFL draft.

He was on my list if Moncrief was taken at 80

78th pick, The Cowboys take Connor Shaw, QB South Carolina
Wow. This pick came out of left field.
They need to start grooming the future & they have addressed some big needs in rounds 1-2... Is this guy the answer, prob not - I wanted Murray to come in, but he was taken earlier in the round... I thought I could get him in the 3rd, I was mistaken. I was then set on QB and with the remaining guys, you might as well throw darts at the board, I liked Shaws potential the best.

Amazingly underrated player. He only had ONE interception last year with 30 touchdowns (6 rushing).

3.11 (#75) - Georgia QB Aaron Murray

ALL signs point to STL prioritizing an upgrade over Clemens at backup QB and grooming a developmental prospect at the all important position. Obviously not sure if it will be this early, or if he will be the QB. But most Rams observers are convinced they will get one, probably not in the first two rounds, possibly later in the fourth or even fifth round. So this could reflect my bias on player and round. But I think with the need so great, it would be better to get the player I want here rather than get too cute and lose him (hi soon to be cut Isaiah Pead/already cut Ro Watkins instead of Mychal Kendricks or Bobby Wagner in the 2012 mid-first!). I also think the Rams could be interested in a RB complement to Stacy, as they evolved into a run-centric offense, Stacy got dinged a few times and he has a very physical, collision-friendly style. Probably not this high, especially if the draft breaks like this (though if they trade down from 1.2 and/or 1.13, they could have extra day two picks). Hyde IMO would have been a steal in the third, I like Mason and could have reunited him with Robinson, but he could be available in the fourth. I was going to play it by ear if no QB selected in this round, but was strongly leaning in the QB direction regardless. Mettenberg going a few picks ago sealed it. I like Murray better than the remaining QBs by a wide margin (McCarron, Boyd, etc.). He has four years starting experience in the SEC, has the conference record for passing TDs and is the first to ever have four 3,000 yard seasons. Maybe he would drop further with the ACL injury (than again, Mettenberger didn't), but I think Murray is scheduled to throw by his pro day. Clemens is a lower echelon backup, and with the starter's checkered medical history, they can't be caught with their pants down at the position again. Murray is good enough that he could win games if he is pressed into action for a game or two, and even to be groomed as an eventual starter if the need arises. Given a high liklihood IMO of an extra day two pick or two, if Murray is a target they covet, they may not want to wait until day three and risk losing him, and settling for a lesser prospect.

* Sorry for the delay, didn't think the pick would get to me so fast.
I think this is a great pick. I am not big on Bradford but I understand the Rams are not going to take Teddy, Manziel, or Bortles. It makes sense to grab a QB with upside. They cannot trot Clemmens out there to watch him lose games again.

With the 82nd pick in the draft, the New York Jets select:

Anthony Steen G - Alabama

With Willie Colon possibly moving on, and semi washed up anyway, and with Brian Winters having his struggles during his rookie seas last year, the Jets could use some fresh meat in the trenches.

Round 3 compensatory picks (just before round 4) are imperatives if we continue deeper....

#97 Pittsburgh (Wallace)

#98 Green Bay (Jennings)

With the 82nd pick in the draft, the New York Jets select:

Anthony Steen G - Alabama

With Willie Colon possibly moving on, and semi washed up anyway, and with Brian Winters having his struggles during his rookie seas last year, the Jets could use some fresh meat in the trenches.
I see the brisk demand for OLinemen is still in full force.

With the 84th pick of the draft, the Arizona Cardinals select S Deone Bucannon, Washington State (6-1, 216). Rated the #4 Safety on most big boards (depending on where you look of course). Cardinals need secondary help with SS Yeremiah Bell is a UFA and current CB2 Jerrard Powers is a likely salary cap casualty. Honey Badger recovery is doubt and is better served covering the slot receiver anyway. Would have also considered a CB if the value had been there, but the combination of value vs. size/physicality of Bucannon tipped the scales. A big bruiser like him in back in the secondary is just what the doctor ordered in the brutal NFC West. Since the Cards D is much better than O, I would have loved to go offense here but needed to fill the starter holes in secondary before upgrades or depth elsewhere. Value is much better here than if I had reached for a OT or 3rd WR.

Deone Bucannon, Washington State
Highly productive player with a knack for knocking runners around in the hole. Game is a bit old school, but the performance of Kam Chancellor during the postseason could entice a team to take a chance on a niche player

At pick 85 the Packers select DT DaQuon Jones Penn St

Very pleased to see him fall and how the first three picks have played out. Go Pack Go!

3.86 Philadelphia Eagles select Marcus Smith, OLB, Louisville.

Loving this value. A productive 6'4" rush OLB.

STRENGTHS: Broad-shouldered, long-armed athlete. Good initial quickness out of the three-point stance, showing enough burst to cross the face of offensive tackles on the perimeter. Good club move to break free from pass blockers as well as the power to effectively push opponents into the pocket on the bull rush.

Alert defender who locates the ball quickly and shows good balance to pursue laterally and downfield. Shows vision and savvy as a walk-up blitzer, timing his rush with the snap nicely to penetrate his initial gap or when looping on stunts. Awareness and underrated athleticism evident when asked to cover tight ends and slot receivers on underneath routes. Gets an effective jam on his target and is athletic enough to handle coverage duties for a few yards.

Physical, reliable tackler who wraps his arms securely and arrives with a thud. Good strength to rip away at the ball while making the tackle.

WEAKNESSES: May be viewed as a 'tweener by some. Strong enough to create a pile in the running game but struggles against double-teams. Productive pass rusher but many of his sacks (and pressures) come while looping in untouched on stunts.

Quicker and more powerful than most opponents at this level but does not possess much variety in his pass rush technique. Too often gets caught up in the hand-fighting at the line of scrimmage. A bit stiff in his midsection, showing only fair ability to bend and explode around the corner and may not possess preferred straight-line speed.

COMPARES TO: Jabaal Sheard, Cleveland Browns - Like Sheard, Smith is a productive, albeit undersized pass rusher. While neither is an elite athlete, each plays with just enough burst, power and savvy to win as either a 4-3 defensive end or a 3-4 rush linebacker.
