It’s back to KP now. He’s got the rest of the list now that my little run is over.
JJL’s accent and mannerisms in Hudsucker is one of few things I think the Coens did wrong.Buckna said:And the funny thing is I love Coen movies!
I love stylistic choices like that and I’m not sure how to articulate the difference or where I would draw the line. I think a prime example of this is like Jennifer Jason Leigh in Hudsucker vs Baldwin in GGR. JJL I love, Baldwin I find so over the top that it’s ridiculous (even if awesomely quotable lines.)
Look buddy, it’s not a movie thread if it doesn’t provide people an opportunity to post their ranked listings of Coen Brothers films. That’s simply an internet law.KarmaPolice said:
I was gonna respond with As if! But you beat me to it.That one guy said:and with it “as if” was thrust into 90s lexicon and ruled it through the remained of the century

Right, some movies are aiming for realism which is fine but most movies know they are movies and are giving us heightened versions of ourselves.Andy Dufresne said:I really don't think this is it.
Stylistic choices are made to convey something that can't come across in straightforward dialog delivery or performance.
The Coen Brothers know people don't exactly talk & act like the people in their movies. But they know that how the performance is delivered can drive home the intent more than playing it straight.
I'll say more when we discuss their movies later. And we BETTER do that!![]()
The casting director did well with that movie.Andy Dufresne said:Having said that, when Alec Baldwin filmed his part in GGGR, I'm pretty sure he said, "I'll just be myself."

Maude (Moore) in Lebowski ain't no day at the beach, either - rrreeeaaaallllyyyy bad.
dooooo yooooo knowwwww cooooeeeeee-eye-tis, Jeffrey?
:X
I just took it as a comic exaggeration.
right, which was the gist of the op that sprouted this response chain - we ackowledged that already ... when it works, it's endearing in it's humorous charm, mostly from a colloquial standpoint - but when it misses (like Maude, imo) it's pure ####### cringe.
Not quite my tempoIlov80s said:60 - DANCES WITH WOLVES
I think this is the last of my “oh god are we sure 80s isn’t an 80 year old Academy member” picks.
Snuck that one in at the bottom of the page, huh 80s?Not quite my tempo
Good thing the laughing emoji is back, but you won't need it for this selection.
59: TASTE OF CHERRY
The imdb summary will probably chase most away -
An Iranian man drives his truck in search of someone who will quietly bury him under a cherry tree after he commits suicide.
I thought this was a gorgeous movie though. I might need to batsignal @krista4 for backup on this one and another of mine coming up.

I haven't seen that one. Hadn't crossed my mind either, I need to keep an eye out for it on TCM or HBO Max.Good thing the laughing emoji is back, but you won't need it for this selection.

Is that what we're calling Costner's terrible script and acting? Not a fan of larghissimo?
....or you need to get the ####### Criterion Channel !I haven't seen that one. Hadn't crossed my mind either, I need to keep an eye out for it on TCM or HBO Max.
Hey, I was referring to the tempo! Leave Kevin aloneIs that what we're calling Costner's terrible script and acting?
Clueless is also the best Jane Austen adaptation and extremely funny. Getting horny teens to line up in droves for a Jane Austen movie should be pretty telling of it's genius. I love art/entertainment that plays dumb but is actually working in on a whole different level.Clueless is a fun little movie but having it ranked above a bunch of other movies already listed is an interesting move.
100% my KP only choices will probably bore him to tears.I will just warn @otb_lifer that I have some lesser seen foreign films pretty high on my list but I swear they are neither sawdust nor mildew. One of them is the cinematic version of cocaine mixed with hallucinogens.

I saw Julie Delpy at a cafe here in NYC right after this came out...it was all I could do to not run up and Col Jessup hug the crap out of her.I will pop off one more that people probably won't dig and get it over with.
58: BEFORE SUNRISE
This should be no surprise. I had Midnight rated highly, and Sunset is one of my favorite movies. I just adore this trilogy. One of my favorite things in movies is chance encounters or small moments between people. I love how the trilogy expanded on this idea and took it to some realistic conclusions with the other movies.

Spoiler alert - An American Werewolf in Paris is not in the top 50. Sorry, GB.Btw...Ms Delpy is in a fantastic early 90s movie that I hope is included here.
It’s actually name of the movie from naked gun 33 1/3 When Drebin is at the awards ceremony and opened the envelope and says it’s the bomb and they all get up and start clapping thinking they won![]()
to be fair, it was ol' @Dan Lambskinwho coined that, back in the first coupla pages ... i just ran with it because i think it's quite brilliant
yes! plz ...
I still haven't seen any of them. I will have to at some point. I don't know why I have been so resistant to them.BTW, I am pretty sure this would have been the year for a 4th Before movie (every 9 years there was one), but looks like they aren't making a 4th.
I would rank it as one of the best movie trilogies with a completely straight face.
Seriously though...there's a Delpy vehicle set in Europe that would go very high on this list.Spoiler alert - An American Werewolf in Paris is not in the top 50. Sorry, GB.
It a bit weird with this format, and I forgot to post it but those 3 are in my personal top 31. Sunrise was 29, Cherry was 31, and the next one is my #28.... Similar for 80s - his next couple will be his #26 and #23 picks.
Just reinforcing that while these are a bit lower in the overall countdown because they are only on one of our lists, these are movies we love a lot.
Maybe not. It's possible i could have been more clear. I/we thought a combined list might give a better product, especially at the top of the list. I think we both thought we would would have more of our lists in common, but I definitely wanted it to be more of a united countdown than a his list vs. my list thing (although that might have been more fun for the peanut gallery).was i the only one expecting dual lists?
in other words, you both post your selections in descending order, simultaneously, with each giving the description of their picks.

Sorry our countdown sucks and our movies are full of sawdust and mildew.nah, man ... i was expecting a full "Siskel & Ebert" type of rundown ... you two certainly have the chops, and the love & passion, even if we do rib a few of the picks.
it was kind of a letdown.
If we ever do another decade, maybe. MAYBE we do a dueling list. I am not really in favor of of opposed to that method. I just know KP wanted to do this but also was hoping I might cover some blind spots. I think that has mostly worked out though I do think we may share a couple blind spots. Alright, @otb_lifer - this one is for you. It takes a cold soul to hate on The Muppets, is your heart black enough to not be moved by....
#57: THE IRON GIANT
? I sang the praises of the animated movies of the 90s. This movie is a main reason why. This is the #28 movie on my list. It's on HBO Max if people haven't seen it.
