Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (1 Viewer)

I also learned about Underground that not only did it win the top prize at Cannes but the director has won that award twice. That’s probably a very small list of multi time winners.

Like I said, I had some predictions about the rest of the countdown.

1.  I think (hope) overall people will be pleased with the top 33.

2.  That said, I think there will be some upsettedness about the order of said movies.

3.  I think as we go further and further there will be more and more "wtf" posts about what is not going to be on the list at all.   Remember - only 33 left, and I am guessing some playing along have a long list of movies they love.

4.  I circled 4 titles that I think will be the biggest surprises in the top 33.

I was going to watch a couple of yours that I haven't seen before.

It’s 3 hours. The 7 hours version is they released all the edited and deleted scenes to make a multi part TV movie for Eastern European TV. I haven’t seen that yet.

Last one from me for the night...

41- Braveheart

I saw it at the theater when I was 12 or 13. We had to sneak into it because it was rated R. That ruled.

Top 20 for me.  Great soundtrack, great story, decent dialogue, decent acting.  Probably watched it 15 times.

My only two criticisms

A) Gibson always felt a little too old for the role

B) His accent was kind of weird, I'm sure the Scottish hate it

C) the dialogue could be a bit sophomoric at times, but brilliant in certain scenes...inconsistent.  "The problem with Scotland is that it's full of Scots"

My second favorite Gibson film after "Apocalypto"...he is an underrated director, probably due to the anti semitic episode.

I meant your #2 and #3 movies.

Didn't know about the 7hour version of this one.    Seriously, though I am joking and added to the queues.   I do need a break from the 90s for a little bit though.

   Apocalypto is a kick-### movie.

Oh lol yeah that’s a funny coincidence and I misunderstood. But yeah Brighter Summer Day and Underground are both very long.

I really want to see that but I feel like the universe doesn’t want me to. I tried to see it at the theater when it came out but the projector malfunctioned and they had to cancel the show. I DVR’d years later and my wife accidentally deleted it.

Oh good, I thought we had spoken about it before so I was confused but I was drinking margaritas last night (and also am now). I also think you said John Malkovich was in Age of Innocence. He wasn’t. Sorry but at least you are someone is reading your posts.

Oh good lord.  :lmao:   Must have been conflating with Dangerous Liaisons.

You have an update on that running list?  ;)

Ah, will do that!

Someday I think you and I are going to have a serious disagreement.

33:  THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS

One of my better surprises of the two months of 90s.   I had written this one off a bit.   I had this at #58, 80s had it #44.

So I have a love affair with this movie.  It's probably top 10 all time for me.  For the decade I have it top 3.

 A nearly perfect film.

it's awesome, highly recommended.

It would have gotten much more recognition had it not been for the anti semitic remarks.

See! Awesome.

Do this for GGG next.

Not many more to comment on, and I've said something about most already.

43 - MALCOLM X - Brilliant performance by Denzel, but there's something about this movie that left me cold.  This is an area where I focused my college studies, so it might be that I wanted it to go deeper.  I remember being shocked that this movie was made at all, though, so I appreciated it.

42 - THREE COLORS:  RED - One of my favorites, but Blue is my favorite of the three, followed closely by this one.  Is there a better actress in the world that Juliette Binoche, by the way?  Irene Jacob is amazing in this one.

41 - BRAVEHEART - Haven't seen.

40 -  THE CABLE GUY - This was unwatchable to me when I tried it at the time, but I wonder if I might like better now.

39 -  QUIZ SHOW - Underappreciated movie at this point so I'm happy to see it getting its due.  Maybe the subject matter seems too trifling at this point, and that's why people forget it?  Unbelievably great performances from everyone (esp John Turturro), and, not that it matters to anyone but me, Ralph Fiennes was the most attractive human I'd ever seen at the time.

38 -  THE SWEET HEREAFTER - One of my top movies of all time.  Devastating and gorgeous.  Perfect pacing in this movie.  Perfect everything, actually.

37 -  BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY - Great movie.  Didn't connect with it quite like I did Yi-Yi.

36 -  BOYZ N THE HOOD - Loved it at the time but wonder if it's held up.  Might need to fire up my HBO Max and see.

35 -  WAITING FOR GUFFMAN - I think more people prefer Best in Show of the Guest comedies (and it's brilliant, too), but this has always been my favorite.  I think it's because I know these people.  Growing up in small-town, midwest US, this all hit home and every performance was perfect.  I could totally see this show being produced at my local theater growing up, with some dumb thing like our having produced an unremarkable Supreme Court justice or a moderately successful golfer replacing their pride in their UFO sighting or the "Stool Boom".  :lmao:

ok so I think this is the last of the movies only to make my list,  my dad turned me on to this

34: Underground

This is the movie I described as more coke and hallucinogens than sawdust and mold. It’s basically a 20th century history of Yugoslavia told through the story of two best friend war criminals/military heroes (depending on the changing winds of the Eastern Europe). It's a weird blurring of genres: war, comedy, fantasy. Very Eastern European, lots of drunk fights. Also it is 3 hours long. Seems like the director was given an unlimited budget to make the ultimate movie about the 50 year history of Yugoslavia and he threw the whole kitchen sink at it. This movie is so full of crazy energy, it’s unlike anything else I’ve ever seen.

trailer
Never heard of this...watched the trailer (maybe too slap-sticky for me) and as soon as I heard the music immediately thought of Time of the Gypsies. Sure enough, same director.

The movie soundtrack playlist just got a lot better. The score rules.

Right there with you on almost all of this.

I'm hoping there's another Egoyan on the list, but doubting it considering how good Hereafter is.

Also wondering if Kieslowskis TV/movie series will end up here, or qualifies. Love his work.

How have you not seen Braveheart? It's a little schlocky, but a good epic Hollywood movie.

My wife's favorite movie. And I don't blame here...so good.

Yeah, I dunno.  There are a few here I haven't seen and am kind of embarrassed about that, like Braveheart.

Surprised to see Mohicans wasn't in IMDB's top 250 of all time.

Easily makes that list for me.

I'm just messin with ya......I'm a sucker for low brow toilet humor, and physical comedy.....no one's ever gonna accuse me of being a movie snob.......beer, and coffee snob maybe

I don't know how I feel vouching for it all these years later, but I saw it in the theater with my brother when it came out, and we laughed nearly the whole way through. Aside from the potty humor, which can go either way in my book (I'm a bit prudish when it comes to stuff like that) it was non-stop laughter for me. I'm not sure how it'd rank up there now for me upon re-watching it, but for and in its time, it was stupid fun.

In case anyone wonders why I don't really do potty humor, it's because it makes us closer to animals and bespeaks the death of God in my book.

So that's where that comes from. A godless existence is not an existence I really want.

You know what don't bail me I want to stay in jail tonight cause maybe then I can finally get some sleep.

#32:  MY COUSIN VINNY

Probably not a surprise that it's on the list, but it might be a surprise that I had it higher.  #44 and #54.    This was another of the biggest surprises of the months of 90s.   Overall I thought the action movies didn't hold up much, and a lot of the comedies I hadn't been paying attention too made me laugh a lot.   Like Guffman, I wouldn't be surprised if this was higher in a few years.

Watching Braveheart should make you want to kick British people's asses.  Such a great flick.

I guess I just watch to much movies.  Have seen basically all of these and most multiple times.  Movies like Braveheart, Apollo 13, Hunt for Red October, A Few Good Men etc etc that are on cable a lot I’ve probably seen 10-15 times.   :scared:    Hard for me to believe some haven’t seen them.

No need for that emoji in here.  I've seen Back to the Future multiples of hundreds of times.

Time for my #12 pick then...

42:  THREE COLORS:  RED

I am always talking about the Before trilogy as one of my favorites, but I probably don't talk about Three Colors enough.   I will admit that it's possible this has a bit of a bump in rankings because it closes out the trilogy so well and ties the others together, but it is my favorite of the bunch by a good bit. They are all good individually, but I usually still recommend them in order.
I've never even heard of this trilogy

Me too!  1&2.  3 not so much
People don't believe me when I say it IRL.   But we basically just had a few tapes for years - Ghostbusters, Karate Kid, and Back to the Future.   I watched those movies on a loop (still probably could).

It’s been on cable a lot the last couple years.  I’ve probably watched 1&2 5 times each in the past 12 months alone.

They are on HBO Max and I wanted to watch it for this countdown but I just never got around to it knowing it was a 3 movie commitment. I always found myself going to something else instead.

This CONVO is about The Bridges of Madison County

I can see why this movie could make the list. The critics loved it. That said, it's one of the most painfully slow movies of any decade with two characters that have no chemistry. It's memorable for me as being one of two movies from the 90s that I wanted to leave the theater but was frozen in place due to extreme boredom and somehow made it to the end. The other was Random Hearts.
I meant to reply to this and even may have started a reply but I don't think I ever submitted it. I saw this for the first time in February preparing to do my list. It was a blizzard outside and so I was just staying in watching 90s movies that were streaming. I saw this on HBOMax and thought, "why not I can always half pay attention and half go on my phone." I honest to god can't believe how much I liked it and got sucked in. I thought Eastwood and Streep had great chemistry. She blew me away (again). There is no way in the world I would have enjoyed or appreciated this when it came out. Now that I am hitting middle age and have in a relationship that's 15+ plus years old now, I can appreciate this. I think every married person has some secret desire for excitement and romance again. My marriage still has that but obviously no 15 year relationship has the same spark as a new relationship or even a secret, forbidden relationship. Plus it got me thinking about my parents what their hidden lives could have been. Tremendous movie.

Doing more 80s research tonight with Teen Wolf.

I will say that after last night's rewatch of Empire I am going to be more hesitant about rewatches of action movies for the 80s.  Way too many action movies are not holding up.   If we do this thing, I think there will be a lot less rewatching and more getting to movies I haven't seen like Amadeus, Ran, or Brazil.

I am not doing an 80s countdown with you until you see those 3 movies.
