Tyreek Hill Detained On The Way To The Game (1 Viewer)

I somewhat understand why Hill acted the way he did. He said he was embarrassed so rolling up the window was probably his attempt not to be identified by the general public.
Don't really understand his anger when the cop tapped on his window the first time. After which he repeats that he shouldn't be banging on his window. That is not the reaction of a person that has any recognition that the cop is just doing his job. I still think that was his downfall. You got to give respect to get it.

Later when he is getting cuffed he continues to gas-light when he starts repeatedly saying that the cop was banging on his window like a madman.
Have you seen the video of the cop-cam on the officer that clocks or observes Hill's speed and you see him start up the Motorcycle and then pull Hill over?
If you have not seen all of that then you haven't seen the whole thing
I saw Hill immediately roll down the window and hand him his ID and tell him do what he needs to do...we can quibble over Tyreek's attitude towards the officers, not my way of doing it.
At the same time Hill didn't do anything totally egregious but I also think the rolling up of the window was acting arrogant

But from that moment it turns ugly and I think the video speaks for it self, you see it all the way from the cuffing and the knee into the back, he could have broken one of Hill's fingers on his hands if things went badly, perhaps even worse. And once he's cuffed they still manhandle him on the sidewalk, then go after Calais Campbell who deserves a medal for being a good teammate in that moment. I was startled when I watched the whole thing without interruption from start to finish with CC" added so you know exactly what is said both directions

Eye-opening for many I'm sure

Hill tweeted something simple like "we need change" that I saw NFL Network report earlier. OK? Why not tweet something like "I could have been better. They could have been better. Let's all be better. If you're a young person who saw that video don't do what I did. Don't do what they did. We need change"

You're not helping anything by inciting people to disrespect police officers.
That's the narrative......you can act like tool, and then just say the cops need to change. No accountability for your role in the escalation.

This is a dangerous game to play. Things can go sideways in a much worse way if a cop feels threatened.

Nobody likes to be "talked at" but sometimes you just roll with it. All of my interactions with police have been traffic incidents and in my younger days, I wasn't very pleasant all the time . But as you get older, you better understand the pressure and stress the police are under and it's not a huge price to pay to be cooperative for the short interaction even if you run into an officer who is less than friendly. Even got off with a warning a couple years back for going 10 over the limit, probably because I just shut up and gave the officer my license and registration. First time ever. Made my night.

Nobody is saying to disrespect all police. But if someone is bad at their job, it's ok to call it out. We do it to NFL players all the time and coaches and owners and referees.
caused the cop to get butt hurt

Nothing caused that other than the cop’s inability to maintain his composure. Cops are able to handle situations like this every day without escalating it like this one did. Hill doesn’t absorb 80% of the blame because this guy is ****ty at his job.
So the cop was going to lose his composure either way?
I don't think the cop would have had the same attitude if Hill complied by having his window already down, leaving it down, ... or putting it back down when asked. It should have never got to the point that the cops had to use force to get him to comply.
Hill was the catalyst in everything wrong that happened here ... THEN the cop went too far.
Being the catalyst does not justify the response. In the situation 1 person is the paid professional and the other is a citizen. Did the citizen act 100% letter perfect, no. But that’s not required for the paid professional to at as such.

And again I want to make perfectly clear my position. Prior to the videos I fully expected Hill, based on his history, to have been the one in the wrong and created the assumed appropriate reaction. That’s not the case. Hill wasn’t “perfect” but the reaction wasn’t even remotely justified.
Agreed. In this scenario, the cop is the paid professional and needs to be held to the higher standard. In the same way that the NFL player would be held to a higher standard in a fan interaction if the fan wasn't perfect.

ESPN/First Take play just about the entire body cam footage, I was shocked we got to see so much of it

22:20 into the DLS today and they do a great job of putting closed caption on the entire incident so you can definitely hear/read what the officers say throughout

It's a good point......but cops get killed by bad guys. When you act aggressive, disrespectful, etc .....you are going to be treated as a potential threat.

Agreed. And a cops first job is to ensure he goes home at night to his family. It’s dangerous work. But “ aggressively” and “disrespectful” are not all or nothing propositions. On an “aggressive” scale he was like a 1. And maybe a 2/3 on the disrespectful scale because of the window. Both actions were incredibly minor. Ideally Should both be 0, sure, and Hill is in the wrong here. But again these minor actions shouldn’t result in the overreaction that came. The tattoo cop was spoiling for a fight and ensured he got one. That is not the temperament we expect out of our paid professionals.

I'm starting to get a sense of which posters have had lots of interactions with police in their past.
I’ve had way more than my fair share, including excessive speeding in a sports car with tinted windows. What didn’t happen was me getting pulled out of my car and tackled to the ground while being cuffed. Why, because the cops acted like professionals.

Have you ever refuse to follow a cop's explicit directive? And in fact done the exact opposite? Multiple times?

Have you ever rolled up your window and said "don't tell me what to do"?

There’s far more nuance in the instance than your reply is suggesting, but to answer your questions. Probably, I certainly gave attitude and argued. I was young and stupid in my early 20’s an absolutely acted in a way that I wouldn’t do today. But I was certainly never threatening just like he wasn’t.

No, no ... The best course of action in this scenario is to leave your window up so the cop can't see you then wait until the cop knocks on your window 3 times before you roll it down 3 inches and immediately start telling the officer what not to do.
I could never be a cop. I wouldn't last a week with people like this.

I again do not condone what the officers did. They were wrong and deserve whatever punishment they face.

I just don’t like Hill not obeying basic lawful commands. He could have cracked his window. I get why the cop opened the door (for his safety) It does not excuse the actions thereafter.Way out of line.

I often exercise my right to not speak during traffic stops. However, I obey and follow all lawful commands. I’m not going to lie - it pisses some cops off (which is sad). One said “I was not respecting him”. However, I should not be treated any differently for exercising my rights and cops should not take that as disrespect.

Not a good situation in Miami.

I understand Hill probably did not want to be seen pulled over, having his photo all over social media, so he wanted the tinted window back up ... but how about you explain that to the cop so he understands who you are and why you would like the window up. Ask the cop if he would come to the passenger side. I've seen cops do it.
"Hey, I know I was going too fast. Do you mind if we do this thru the passenger side? I play for the Dolphins and I don't want this to be blasted all over social media."
some cops are reasonable that way, but some are not.

some want to be 100% in control and 100% the boss when they pull you over and if you do something like that they'll say you are resisting arrest or something dumb like that.
Don’t tap on my window
Don’t tap on my window
Don’t tap on my window
Don’t tap on my window
Don’t tap on my window
Don’t tap on my window
Don’t tap on my window
Don’t tap on my window

Curious why you would exercise your right not to speak.
Trying to think of why and the only things that I can come up with is because you might slur your words? Maybe alcohol on your breath?

Hill does crack the window.
He has the window wide open at 1st, then he rolls it up, then the 1st officer tells him to roll it down 3 or 4 times, then Hill cracks the window, then the overzealous officer opens the door and pulls him out.

whatever happened to knowing when you get pulled over to simply start getting your license, registration, and proof of insurance ready for the officer who you know is going to ask you for those things...is it really that hard...?

ask yourself.....who really escalated the incident....

It looked like the officer had all of Hill's documentation when Hill rolled up his window

none of this happens if Hill cooperates and isn't a jerk.
The cop unnecessarily escalated a routine traffic stop.
Ther were at least 4 of them there.
Hill handed over his documentation. Said write me a ticket
Easy for the cop. Write the ticket and be gone.

The cop was provoking the situation totally unnecessarily and using violence as a first resort.
There was no danger or threat.

Damn, that video is wild. More on Tyreke's side after seeing it, but still don't know why he rolled his window up, that was dumb. Those cops could have handled things WAY more professionally.
Have you ever been stopped by the police, rolled your window down, and then rolled it back up? I have. 100%. Either because it was too cold (winter) or too hot (summer). Now, I don’t have tinted car windows. And if a cop told me to keep the window rolled down, I would politely comply, for sure.

So sorry, but I don’t see him rolling the window back up as any big deal. Dude is famous. He might not want to sit on the side of the road with the window down for everyone to see. Who knows, but it isn’t crazy to imagine that he had a valid reason.
drive recklessly endangering people in your fancy car basically screaming "look at me"....and then when you get pulled over....you don't want anybody to see you....got it

Had anything to drink? Gotta gun? Any drugs in your vehicle? Where are you coming from?

Endangering people?? You’ve never sped before?

And you know it’s possible to like owning and driving nice cars without doing it for the “look at me” factor.

Ima gonna say something without anything to back it up....

but I could see a scenario where Hill was going "visually" faster then 60 in a 40 (or whatever it was) .....but then after things start to shake down the way they did....and calmer heads eventually prevail....like shaking hands afterwards or whatever....both sides maybe acknowledging they didn't handle it very well.... the actual citation gets the speed dropped down to what is generally in most cases right at about that speed that keeps you out of jail or puts you in jail.....generally, I think here if you are 20 over, they can take you to jail, no questions asked if they want to....so whether it was 60 or 100....he was speeding pretty bad....I know I have had cops lower the speed they put on my ticket, just to save me a few points/higher insurance or some $$$,....but still get their point across...I mean do we really think he probably wasn't getting on that car....it's why you have it...lol....if he wasn't speeding more then 20 over "right then" ...let's be honest.... at some point he probably was...I would have been in that thing....if he shook hands and then then throws them under the bus afterwards, I'm not sure what thats about...

the part that hasn't been getting much run is Hill screaming "they arresting me Drew"....over and over as he goes down....lol...he already hit the Drew speed dial button on his phone....

I don't want to sound all little kid on this....but to me it all comes down to "who started it".....and that's where I put the blame.....I know it's the new woke thing or whatever to hate the police and film everything ....and stand up for yourself, especially against cops (cause we see all the bad ones, not usually the good ones) ....so we don't have our rights violated or something ....and be able to recite what they can and can't do and what you can and can't do like you have had it memorized since your were 5 or some **** ....in today's world people think they know the law better then the authorities....blah blah blah....but the 7 year old little kid in me says Hill "started this" and doubled down and escalated it....none of it happens if he isn't driving recklessly and then if he just simply does what you are supposed to do...give them some respect...(they had a very legit reason to pull over to begin with).....roll down your window, give them what they need and comply...it could have been a quick stop and go.....with a ticket or whatever....but your attitude and actions escalated it to a place it didn't need to go....but now the narrative and spin will be the cops need to be better, they need to be the bigger person, THEY need to be the one deescalating even tho the other person continues to escalate.....whatever...we want these guys to serve and protect us when we need them.....but man they better do it the way we want them too even if we are acting like total tool bags....

roll your window down and keep it down (especially if it is illegally tinted).... for their safety and more importantly for your safety....don't be a ****...give them the required documents....comply with what they ask (unless crazy) .....we want them pulling people that drive like you over....show them some respect...like it or not, and even tho there are some bad ones....they have earned it by putting on that uniform everyday....

Danny Torres, the cop who pulled Tyreek out of the car, was in a coma for a month in 2020 after an accident. I wonder if that contributed to his overly aggressive behavior in dealing with Tyreek. As a 27-year employee, he made "$171,000 as a county police officer last year, including $39,000 from overtime pay, according to a county database." Not bad. A hefty pension is also coming.

Just want to ask one more time: for the folks who are of the firm view that Tyreek is the main problem here, and the police weren’t culpable, how do you think about Calais Campbell being cuffed?

(Context again: Calais Campbell is an NFL Man of the Year winner and widely regarded as one of the best humans in the NFL)

Lol ... is there such a thing as a question that ISN'T designed to get info? From a cop or anyone else.
This seems disrespectful and males you look like you're hiding something ... and I'm guessing you would never get off with a warning.
I answer the questions politely, engage in conversation, and have been let off with a "ok, just slow down" on 2 occasions. I don't understand the need for resistance.

I don't agree with handcuffing the guy...
but you can't use the guys accolades as a reason to treat him better. The cops don't know who this guy is... heck, I watch football and I didn't recognize him without the uniform and name on his back.
Cops should have handled that better regardless of the citizens standing in the public.

Fully agree that the citation might not be the actual offense. It’s been a few years since I got a ticket (although I have been pulled over twice in the last 4 years without a ticket issued). Those were for 5 over, I definitely was well over that, closer to 15 iirc.

But yeah, we do expect the cops to be better. Both were wrong here, one was wrong in the execution of his job. The other is a known *******.

As for calling his agent, if that’s who it was, that’s a non issue. Our adult kids call us, our friends adult kids call them during times of stress, after an accident, etc. agents often are like parents to these guys, many of which lacked good parenting.

whatever happened to knowing when you get pulled over to simply start getting your license, registration, and proof of insurance ready for the officer who you know is going to ask you for those things...is it really that hard...?

ask yourself.....who really escalated the incident....
he did exactly that at the start, this happened sunday not 3 hours ago so why are you still acting like he didn’t do that?
