2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (2 Viewers)

Keep in mind that Suarez's bite on Chiellini was like the 3rd time he bit someone. And if I recall, it was after his incident with Evra. 3 bites and you are out.
EPL banned Cantona for 9 months for his kung fun kick of the fan.

Not sure either are the same here, esp with the family protection issue.

I'm pretty sure he bit Ivanovic on the shoulder during that strange vampire stage he was in.

I looked up the timeline. Evra was 2012, and Ivanovic in 2013, before Chiellini in 2014.

He's the best goal scorer I've seen at Liverpool (Salah included) -- an absolute joy to watch play -- and I loved him for bawling his eyes out when Liverpool threw away the title challenge by giving up 3 goals to Crystal Palace, but I don't feel great about any of my affections now.

So the video backs up what the Uruguayans are saying -- Nunez's wife and little baby (and other family members of the team) were in a section being harassed+ by Colombian fans before Nunez and Araujo waded in. And it seems like most people are now questioning where security was ahead of all that.

There's no question that stadium security has some questions to answer. At the same time, I'm always reluctant to form broad opinions based on short snippets of video without context. I was watching live with some friends and at the time my reaction was it was a bit of handbags. It now appears much more serious. In retrospect, everyone knows that all these CONMEBAL countries have a long history with each other and it seems really very odd they would seat players' families with young children in the midst of opposing fans.

The kid and I were at Old Trafford seeing the stewards wearing bright green line both sides of the away section to keep fans apart.

I told her a fight broke out in this game and she says "That's why the highlighters should be lining the stands!"

I don't think CONMEBOL has any ability to suspend Nunez from club soccer. They can certainly suspend him for qualifying though.
Wasn't Suarez suspended from everything on Planet Earth after he bit Chiellini? That's what I was thinking of as precedent.
This is where it gets confusing to me.

That bite was in the WC which was a FIFA tournament and FIFA has the ability to ban across competitions and regions. I don't think CONMEBOL has that ability unless FIFA some how gets involved but I don't ever remember that happening in a non FIFA specific event.

We will see soon though.
I think this type of behavior warrants punishing the Mexican women's team.

Didn't a Colombian fan kill one of the Colombian players in like the late 80s early 90s for missing a PK? I have a vague memory of that from when I was a kid (I played club soccer at the time so I followed soccer).

No.

A guy named Escobar scored an own goal vs the US, and they lost.

When he returned home he was shot up a bunch. Rumors it was the other Escobar.

WC 94. I was at the game.

Great 30 for 30 on it: "30 for 30" The Two Escobars

So we're at least tacitly condoning the fan behavior last night? Yay Colombia?
Right?

I'm not a footie junkie like others. Between Premier League, catching top European club games, the Euros and the WC, that's a lot of soccer for me.

I don't think I am missing much if I ignore the footy fans who have been having a contest with their players to see who is dirtier. Grimy-@ss players trying to hurt people and then screaming at the refs. I cannot even fathom what their club games are like.

Really good episode.

One point made in the Charlotte FC supporters circles was that there were plenty of open suites/boxes they could have been directed to.

It definitely seemed serious watching in the stadium, although it seemed like there were pockets of Colombians fighting each other a couple of times. You just don't often see players in warmups marching into the stands. And Nunes with the chair was quite a sight.

That said, Charlotte always has an issue with the whole beer throwing celebrations. It isn't surprising at all that some folks use those celebrations as an excuse to throw things AT folks instead of just into the air. Stadium security does nothing to stop that.

Yep... when have the Argentine fans ever caused any trouble?
So it's a yes. Cool

What does it mean to "tacitly condone" this? Anyone who doesn't feign outrage at this totally unprecedented and completely unforeseeable fan behavior is condoning it?
I raised the question, the answers deflected and pointed to other things without denouncing the fan behavior. That's tacitly condoning to me.

And lost in all that... It was an amazing, gutty performance by Colombia. Hard not to be a fan of how they play going forward...even if there lots of what Uruguay brings in terms of quick tactical fouls and histrionics (regionally de rigueur). They did seem defensively suspect, even before the card...is that normal for them, or did URU figure something out? The post red switch to 5 man back line was perfect.

Any word on Rios injury? He was incredible last night...hope he's fit for Arg. Him vs DePaul should be epic if he's ready to go.

So it's a yes. Cool
If you agree the Argentine fans have never caused trouble I guess. I was sort of assuming that fans of every team in most countries in the world have had their moments and choosing who to support on that basis might not be the best option.

And hereby totally condemn them: Darwin was right - pass it on.

I get that but it seems tiresome to have to preface any reply with, "I'm totally against beating up defenseless wives and small children, but ..." lest you be accused of condoning that.

i've been to tons of live sporting events and never, ever, not once ever seen a fan fight. never. nope. never ever. definitely not at a pro game. or a college game. or a HS game. or even elementary school events.

this is shocking, unprecedented in sporting history.

maybe someone should look at alcohol sales, testosterone, human emotion and thought policing and clean this all up so we never have to see it ever again.

I hadn't seen it mentioned. It's tiresome if people had shown some outrage over it while bringing up the other points and then were being asked to continue expressing that outrage.

And ftr, I don't condone what the Uruguay players did either.

My dad took my brother and friends to see a NHL game with the Seals (Oakland) vs somebody in the 70s. Huge fight that spilled into the stands.

Don't remember ever seeing fans going after families that way. I could be wrong. Or should we just accept it, since all fans get into fights?

going after the opposing players families is completely different and not even in the realm of the same thing

I should've read the last paragraph.

Since I'm a pretty likely candidate for "King of Weird Hills to Die On", respect Floppo.

Somehow you aren't tracking that I agree with you though -- I regret that more of Colombia's fans aren't going to pay the full price for their idiocy.

Just saying that since every team has (or has had) idiot fans that do idiot things that's not how I'll be making my choice of who to support.

I'm cheering on Colombia because I tacitly endorse teams whose fans attack families. I think this activity is directly related to the athletes on the team and I would like them to know I like that stuff.

Might have Sausalito Seals little league stuff...

I think the best practice in these cases is to avoid rushing to judgment based on a small snippet of video with no context. The odds that more comes out over the coming days are 100%. I'm happy saying all of these fighting fans are idiots but not quite ready to proclaim that one group is totally at fault or that any fans intentionally targeted wives and kids based on what I've seen. Much more likely is that small groups of fans had some fisticuffs and it unintentionally spilled over to where some families were sitting. Here's a longer video for some more context: link and link

I totally forgot I threw my hat against Colombia. I get the responses better now.

Been a long few days.

Didn't know we had to vocally condemn the fans fans actions while showing support for the actual players.

Yes the Colombia fans' actions were terrible. The Uruguay families should have been kept safe (maybe in a suite instead of trying to sell the suites for $$). If the Uruguay players were protecting their families then good on them. If not, they shouldnt be there.

I root against all Philadelphia teams because of my firsthand experience with their fans. Just tossing that out there.

From the longer video it looks like the Uruguay families were fine until Araujo and that other guy jumped into the stands and started engaging. The family members are holding him back and he keeps charging through to get to the fight going on 20 rows back.

Good advice. One of the URU players involved mentioned it coming down to a few drunk COL fans being at the root of it.

I just don't like people going after families.

I don't think the narrative is that URU players just decided to jump into the stands to attack COl fans. Ive seen comments about things being thrown at their families, and the familes unable to leave... Promoting them to entre the stands and "defend" their families. I'm not supporting that course of action either, but...

What a match to attend. The streets of Charlotte were covered in yellow fans before and after. I have video of pockets of blue during the Uruguay anthem. The Colombians singing the anthem was loud and amazing. What an environment.

The match itself was something else. I captured good video of James’ corner leading to the goal. Uruguay were unlucky to not score. They had some great opportunities, but just couldn’t finish.

The melee was sad to see, but not unsurprising. You could see them bringing family member onto the field, and as mentioned by Desert Power, someone being treated for injuries. The player grabbing the chair led to an “oh ****!” from me. Glad he didn’t land a blow with it.

Stadium security seemed only concerned with guarding the field, and they even failed at that. There were definitely some police deep in the stands trying to separate people.

What a night.
