2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (2 Viewers)

I want it changed.

I want clear stoppages in the game clock for injuries, goals, subs, free kicks and any time the ball goes out of bounds. I want games to end exactly at 90 minutes. I want extremely explicit laws that prevent any league or federation trying to exploit this for commercial interruption of the games.

This would remove corruption, remove incompetence, and remove time wasting (a huge issue) from the sport. You lose the feeling of not knowing when the game will end (which a lot of soccer fans love)

I am in the vast vast vast vast minority with my opinions on this.
I genuinely don't get the bold.

I don't mind the "play on until the end of the attack" thing. They could still do that even if they tracked extra time properly.

It's the deciding to just guesstimate (often not even trying to get it close to reality) how much time to add that is nuts. Either stop the clock on stoppages or have a running clock of extra time visible that ticks up in realtime when play is stopped. It's so friggin easy.

I guiltily admit that some of the FIFA capriciousness adds entertainment value.

I still love when a team won the first leg of a qualifier like 1-0 but complained to FIFA that a blatant penalty was missed and argued they should have been awarded a 3-0 win as a result.

FIFA was like "you're right, the referee missed what was a clear penalty.....so the game needs to be played all over again from the start :lmao: '

Just now from the Olympic website. Not only is the game “Suspended” but there’s a potential offside still being reviewed. Argentine TV reports that the players have “no idea” if the game is over
Would be beyond awesome if the VAR officials went "NOT ON MY WATCH" and found an offside that wasn't there.
you know, rewatching it now and pausing it, I think the guy who headed the ball that went off the cross bar was offside..............

Did they end up reversing it?

It looks like he was almost definitely offside.

Looks on to me.

Not even joking.

In classic soccer fashion, no one seems to know for sure.

Some are saying game is final at 2-2, others are saying game is still in a suspended state and no final score is available.

He looks clearly offside to me but the Moroccan fans running on to the field likely interrupted the VAR process. Ironically, the fans may have cost their team a win.

I mean this is pure fricken comedy!!! :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

==============

This is the situation:

The players go out to warm up. The referee is going to review the play in the VAR. If it is not a goal, three more minutes are played. If it's a goal, it's over. FIFA wanted to finish it and the referee wanted to review it.

oh and it gets even better!

Now they are saying the ref might be going to check a potential penalty for Argentina due to a handball prior to the offside lol

And Argie has every right to be apoplectic about this.
Or zero right at all, depending on how you feel about the 16 minutes of injury time.
Absolutely right. In all the news reports I've scanned, not a single word about why/how it was 15... 16... 19 minutes of ET.

My point was that as inexplicable as it was... There were 15etc minutes added and Argie thought they'd tied in that time. If I'm argie, I'm a tiny green globule at this point.

But if the issue was that VAR wanted to review but Argie fans rushed the field and threw everything into chaos then less so, right?

I'm actually surprised FIFA's first response was "yeah let's just leave it as the wrong result because the fans rushing the field interrupted the process".

It was Moroccan fans who rushed the field... I think.

Either way. Argie deserved to lose. because of the unheard of ET or because of the offsides. Both work for me. And even still... Id lose my mind if I was their fan or player.

Lost in the chaos was New Zealand, for the moment, jumping to first place in the US group with a 2-1 win today. NZ also missed a pk during the game.

By the way, GD is the first tie breaker, so the US preventing an expected blow out today could come into play.

Coming into the summer, our common belief was that there were very few, if any openings on the senior roster for other players in the near term for the US.

But with the poor showing in the Copa coupled with GGG being sacked, I wonder if the Olympics can serve as a bit of a showcase audition for some one to push their want into the team, depending on the new coaches needs....
I for one agree that this team needs a shakeup. I think we could definately look at some of this younger talent and part of the problem was the team seemed too comfortable with their existing situation.

I agree but as we have mentioned in other threads, this is an unusual problem for the US because most, if not all of the younger talent, has already broken through to the full team.

Hopefully whom ever the new coach is will have different tactics and ideas that can use players who were not a part of GGG's philosophy.

Oh dear...

Turns out it wasn't just one drone incident from Canada Soccer... it was two. An analyst and an assistant coach have been sent home, and Bev Priestman will not coach tomorrow's opener against the Ferns
My plan for the Olympics was to watch none of it excluding our (Canada) women's soccer team. Now I hope they fail badly. The whole team should be booted out.

I genuinely don't get the bold.
DRAMA and SUSPENSE

If the US were to score it looks like it will have to come from some set pieces. Busio hits a nice driving free kick and Miles, Zimm and Duncan could cause some problems for France.

The US is really going to have to grind today to keep this close.

The lineup is about what I expected outside of Aaronson over Booth
How come guys like Pulisic aren't playing?

It is still so depressing most fans can't see how broken allowing the ref to keep his own time is. There is so much room for corruption or incompetence.
As a casual fan, this is my biggest issue (way bigger than the flopping, offsides, etc.). It seems like such an easy fix - just show us the damn time like every other sport!
it does seem like an easy fix until you factor in that probably 3-4 billion people on the planet disagree.
Yeah, well, Nickelback has a strong following, Trump got elected, somehow "Gagnam Style" became a thing...

I do not want it changed. Running clock, no stoppages.

Would I like a little more clarity on stoppage time and how it works? Sure.
Would I like a little more consistency from ref to ref on how its applied? Sure.

Do I want to get rid of it and make it like every other American sport? :censored: NO

Yeah... don't get this at all.

Seems dumb to have Lacazette as one of your overage players. I suppose they're at home, but its not like Neymar playing for Brazil when they hosted - the guy is 33 years old!

Same as why all the best players are not in the Olympics. They need time a little time off.

They played a full season, went right into Copa or the Euro's, and their club teams are already in preseason. The Olympics is really just a youth tournament in soccer. Lots of fun but the best of the best rarely play.

He's just played in the Copa America tournament and now gets a week or so rest before his real job starts again.

Ah, didn't realize this. Thanks.

Just so you know on the bold. This is a under 23 year old based tournament. Each team can invite up to 3 overage players if they want.

Is Otamendi the oldest player in the tourney? The Paraguay goalie looked older than me...

The unbelievable thing about France is that Lacazette has not been good enough to play for France for many years, but has 53 goals for Lyon in the past two seasons. So yeah, that guy's available if you need him Thierry.
