DR★ Music Draft reopened: make any outstanding picks and let's talk about the next draft (1 Viewer)

Ohhh.  I never liked that other larger than life figure.  Pun intended.
I didn't really know his stuff, just the name. I do like the sound of his voice and I like how he works with others... but just didn't get into any of the songs I heard today.

ETA: Not to be a Richard...

@Eephus- Two questions about 'Other instruments'

Mister CIA chose George Martin on the 'Piano' and Waingro chose Tito Puente as 'Percussion.' Should these be in the 'Keyboards' and 'Drums' categories or are we not being that specific?
I'm not going to throw these out but they go against the spirit of the category.

A piano is the very definition of a keyboard.  I could see picking Martin with "studio" as the instrument but he's really not the kind of producer like Scratch Perry who made studio trickery a big part of his sound.

Puente is probably best known for his work on the timbales which are drums.  He's not a guy like Airto (alive) or Nana Vasconcelos (deceased) who banged on a box full of percussion instruments.

That's what I was thinking, just wanted to get your opinion.

Awesome singer and great pick. "Son Of A Preacher Man" is one of the sexiest vocals ever laid to wax. I bet Billy Ray didn't last 10 seconds.
Thanks, Uruk. Loving the comment about the Four Tops, too. It's always instructive to have you in the joint.

Maybe next we can do a draft of musicians you wish had died.  For example, couldn't we have lost the guy from Smash Mouth instead of Tom Petty?

In retrospect, I probably should have made the start of the draft the cutoff for eligibility.  But I didn't so the Petty pick will stand eventually I guess.

I'm feeling bummed about TP and the state of the world in general today.  I'll pick my 9th rounder tomorrow.

Round 9

But Anyway - Bobby Sheehan (Blues Traveler) - Bass
whoa.

I saw BT a lot when I was in college- used to play uptown a lot when they weren't at the Wetlands. their 1st or early manager was a classmate (and also bill graham's son, and the boyfriend of my ex's best friend.. :loco:  ) so probably saw them more than anybody else during those college years (late 80s) before they hit. they get kind of a bad rap for an association with spin doctors and being an 80s jam band.. but they were really fun and hugely talented on their instruments. had no idea the bass player died- not much older than me. :(

eta: just listened to some stuff off that first album (remembering that "mulling it over" was my jam- and a good bass track too)... brings me right back, except I don't think I ever bought the official release- I'm only used to the stuff from their demo. really wonder what happened to that.

We were talking about this, Eephus. It's not a fun day; it's downright awful.

In the name of copacetics, let's move George Martin to the composer/songwriter category. Is that better? The person I was going to take as "other" can easily fill in this category.

I am rescinding my Petty pick. Or petty pick depending on your POV.

I was auditioning third vocalist choices on YouTube when I heard the news and it felt like s punch in the guy. A split second later I was like, wait a minute I'm in this draft looking for a vocalist.

Anyway, no hard feeling ilor objections from me nor do I really sense any coming my way. But it seems like the right thing to do

Hi Folks,

As I said yesterday, I'm opening this back up. I apologize for the frustration I caused with locking it. The Monty Python "Not Dead Yet" posts while Tom Petty was in the hospital were too much for me Monday. I'm entirely open to the idea that I'm too sensitive to it because of Tom Petty and also the Las Vegas shooting. I admit the line for what's ok feels blurry.

Please be extra respectful in this the rest of the way. I know the people participating are music lovers.
